Chapter 404: Chapter 376: The Githyanki’s Trap
Just as the father-in-law went missing, the Githyanki army arrived—wasn’t it obvious that something had happened to him?
Despite Gareth’s cheerful looting with Amberser, deep down he was still very concerned about his father-in-law’s safety—it was a case of loving one thing on the strength of another.
Pale Bone was even more panicked, with her mind occupied solely by thoughts of her father.
Gareth didn’t hesitate and approached Pale Bone, saying, "Don’t worry, let’s first take out these toads, then we can slowly investigate your father’s whereabouts."
Gareth then said to Amberser, "Brother, I’ll leave the memory reading to you."
Amberser naturally replied, "Don’t worry, it’s a small matter."
As long as he could obtain the complete soul of the Githyanki, Amberser could break down their memories and check them bit by bit at any time.
Gareth nodded and then prepared to leave with Pale Bone.
But just as Amberser saw Gareth riding the Bone Dragon soaring into the sky, a sense of foreboding emerged.
"No good! Come back!"
Amberser tried to call out loudly, but unfortunately, with the uncertainty of her father’s life and death, Miss Bone Dragon was in such a rush that she had already soared high into the sky.
Aige asked curiously, "What’s wrong?"
"That fool!" Amberser said helplessly, "I have a premonition that they are going to suffer."
"But..." Aige was about to say that Gareth couldn’t possibly be at a disadvantage, but then he immediately remembered Amberser’s identity. Could the premonition of a Legendary Rank Diviner Mage be wrong?
"Is there still time to help?" Aige asked, "Should we ask the President for help?!"
Amberser was stunned for a moment. Could Aige really invite the mysterious President Dong? Or was he thinking of another expedition by the Elegy Poetry Society?
However, Amberser quickly shook his head and said, "There’s no need for that; it shouldn’t be a big problem, but they’ll just have to suffer a bit. Let’s go, we need to hurry too; it’s our turn next."
Aige asked strangely, "Where to?"
"We’re going to the true core of this Dragon Tomb; we need to control it to deal with these Githyanki. I can’t just fly up as a mage and face them head-on."
Aige said even more surprised, "You can control this Dragon Tomb?"
"If the master were here, it would be impossible, but now that the master’s not home and has let me in, how could this place stop me, a thief of my profession? You might not believe this, but when I was an adventurer, I was more adept at lock-picking and disabling traps than thieves, especially magic traps."
Amberser strode towards a certain direction in the Dragon Tomb, with the unseen Dice of Destiny continuously spinning to clear the path for him. To others, it appeared as if a clear path simply emerged under Amberser’s feet, as if he already had control over the place.
Aige clicked his tongue in wonder and followed Amberser, along with Melina.
As Amberser advanced toward the real heart of the Dragon Tomb, Gareth had already ridden his wife up to the Githyanki army.
The army wasn’t too large, with a sweeping glance revealing only two to three thousand, but they were clearly elite. They somehow managed to get a bunch of Yixi Manta Rays, these massive deep-sea creatures they had tamed into mounts, turning the Githyanki into Ray Fish Knights, patrolling the waters around Dragon Island.
In the sky were ten Red Dragons, and on the back of each Red Dragon were a few Githyanki Dragon Knights.
Gareth originally wanted to inquire about his father-in-law’s whereabouts and confirm the intentions of these Githyanki, but the latter didn’t bother with niceties and began to hurl spells at Gareth the moment they saw him.
Gareth too became enraged. He had spared these toads last time, yet here they were, popping out to give him trouble.
With a pat on Pale Bone’s neck, Miss Bone Dragon understood what Gareth meant and used her stealth ability.
In the cover of night, Pale Bone and Gareth became an invisible wraith dashing toward the Red Dragons.
If they could get within forty meters, Gareth could hurl his Darkflame Longblade to bisect those Red Dragons—no Dragon Scales or Magic Shields could stop it.
Years ago, there was nothing in the Mortal World that could withstand a strike from Gareth’s blade.
An imperceptible shadow coupled with an unstoppable strike—Gareth had once carved his way in and out amongst dozens of Astral Red Dragons, terrifying the Githyanki.
But to Gareth’s astonishment, as they plunged into the shadow for their charge, those Red Dragons began to scatter in all directions.
It wasn’t a feint; they were fleeing full-on, without a moment’s hesitation. Even the Githyanki patrolling the sea began to control their rays to dive beneath the waves, disappearing without a trace as to how long they could hold their breath.
What puzzled Gareth even more was that those flying Red Dragons had been cast with an array of supportive spells like Acceleration Spells, Flight Spells, and Featherfall Spells—propelling them far beyond Pale Bone’s flying speed.
Although Miss Bone Dragon could conceal her form, it didn’t enhance her flight speed.
What was wrong with these Githyanki? Weren’t they here to cause trouble? Why then did they suddenly flee?
While Gareth pondered this, the Dragon Knights atop the Red Dragons began to chant loudly.
Long chanting for spell casting is generally indicative of a very powerful spell; Gareth was no mage, and neither was Miss Bone Dragon, so they could only feel the immense magic power brewing.
At that moment, Gareth made a critically mistaken decision—he chased after the slowest flying Red Dragon. Although the flight speed of most Red Dragons was roughly the same, individual variations always existed, and this particular dragon had slightly slower velocity due to its inferior constitution.
It was that slight difference that Gareth thought he might catch up if he pursued, after all, these Red Dragons didn’t know where he was, so perhaps, as they flew, they would eventually need to catch their breath, and he might catch up to them then.
It was Gareth’s instinctive reaction during combat to target the weakest point for an attack—it was the most efficient method.
But just as Gareth accelerated towards the direction of that Red Dragon, having only flown a distance of about a hundred meters, Pale Bone Miss suddenly said in confusion, "Gareth, there seems to be something ahead. I just bumped into it."
Pale Bone’s stealth was only to shield perception and make her form invisible; unlike her father, she couldn’t directly traverse to another plane to evade.
Therefore, if there was something in the air to collide with, Pale Bone would definitely be touched.
When she flew forward just now, she felt as if she had encountered something, but it was so fleeting and light that she couldn’t identify what it was.
Gareth, sensing something was off, immediately told Pale Bone, "There’s a problem, let’s turn back!"
Pale Bone also felt that something wasn’t right and was prepared to turn back and fly towards the sea, but she immediately sensed something hitting her body, similar to the sensation she had felt before, except this time with much greater force.
Not only did Pale Bone feel it, but Gareth did too.
"Spider’s silk?! Web spell?"
Gareth was stunned; his body now had sticky, invisible threads on it.
This was obviously the sensation of a web spell, but why couldn’t even the undead’s perception detect it?
The undead didn’t rely on eyes to see, but instead sensed everything with their souls; even transparent objects would take shape in the perception of the undead.
But these webs completely evaded the undead’s perception, and it was unclear why.
What left Gareth even more speechless was that he couldn’t even see who was casting the web spell, while sticky clumps of invisible webs quickly appeared over him.
At this time, Gareth realized that it was the Dragon Knights flying in the sky who were continuously casting web spells behind them.
They didn’t need to know exactly where Gareth was at—they simply waited for him to rush into their trap.
After the first touch by the web spell, the spellcasters had already roughly sensed Pale Bone’s position, and then countless web spells from all directions started flying towards Gareth’s location.
The hit rate wasn’t high, but when the quantity was enough, the hit rate was no longer an issue.
Gareth and Pale Bone were tightly ensnared by the webs; the stuff couldn’t be resisted with magic resistance because the webs created were physical, and their stickiness wasn’t just a simple magical effect.
With their stealth failed, Pale Bone and Gareth were bound by the web spell into a ball, unable to move and began to plummet towards the sea surface.
However, it wasn’t a big problem; dark purple flames ignited on Gareth, beginning to turn those invisible webs into ashes. Give him a few more seconds, and he would have broken free.
Unfortunately, it was during these seconds that the battle came to an end.
Countless spells struck Gareth, exploding his body into chaotic flashes of light. The Githyankis seemed clever and didn’t use any spells that could help break the web spell—they were all charm, petrify, banish, slow, and other control-type spells.
The magical equipment on Gareth’s body began to activate one by one, blocking spells, granting saving throws... all such magical gear was completely depleted.
At that moment, a purple-red magical glow landed on Gareth, ignoring his magic armor, and turned him into a pink phantom.
Banishment spell—having no damaging effect, it could exile a target to another world.
During the spell’s duration, the target would cease to exist in the current plane and neither party could influence the other.
The effect of the banishment was powerful, but it was generally ineffective against someone as formidable as Gareth. The more intense an individual’s presence, the more substantial their impact on the whole world, making it difficult to exile such a figure to another plane.
But the sheer volume was overwhelming; after so many control spells were cast, finally, one was successful.
As Gareth had just turned into an immobile phantom, a Githyanki riding a Red Dragon shouted triumphantly, "We did it! Move in!"
The Red Dragons that had initially circled around Gareth turned back and rushed towards Pale Bone.
From the beginning, the Githyanki’s target wasn’t Gareth; they were well aware of Gareth’s strength, a formidable foe that couldn’t be killed in a short period. This had been an unfair battle from the start; even several times more Githyanki wouldn’t be enough in a direct confrontation.
So the Githyanki focused on Pale Bone instead.
They had already found out that Gareth’s vulnerability was Pale Bone, and by controlling the Bone Dragon, Gareth would have no choice but to kneel and wait for death.
All they had to do was swarm her, and Miss Bone Dragon, whose stealth had been broken, would have no choice but to surrender.
But just as they were about to capture Pale Bone, a tremendous and fearsome figure appeared above the Isle of Slumber.
