Chapter 403: Chapter 375 Githyanki Attack
As a transmigrator without any cheats, Amberser always had the habit of self-reflection.
Did I get tricked today? Who did I trick? How can I maximize my benefits?
Now Amberser needed to consider how to maximize his benefits.
He had seen the Dragon Tomb; apart from a pile of bones and special magical products, it was rather poor. He figured other members of the Dragon Race weren’t much better off.
The reason the mighty Giant Dragons were in such a sorry state was that the islands here were barren. The truly rich resources were underwater, and most Giant Dragons were not swimmers.
That’s not to say they would drown upon contact with water, just that they were not adept at it.
Above land, no matter how many Murlocs came to wage war against the Giant Dragons, it was a death sentence for them.
But once they were underwater, a small squad of Murloc warriors could take out a Giant Dragon that ventured into the deep.
Giant Dragons could only feed on fish in shallow waters, as venturing into the deep sea would turn them into prey for the Murlocs.
And Bone Dragons were the best divers, which is why Sevres was always the busiest during the Dragon Race’s early days overseas.
He didn’t need to rest or breathe, and could hunt in the seabed day and night, feeding the hungry young dragons, including his own daughter, a newly hatched little Rainbow Dragon.
Years later, the Dragon Race struggled to adapt to a fish diet, but they could barely get by.
Reproduction was a big problem; the population was hard to increase, and many Giant Dragons died from various causes.
As such, the Dragon Race was very poor. There were not many islands at sea, too little territory to offer, and not enough slaves to control. Thus, these dragons were as poor as could be, echoing emptily in their lairs when they shouted.
Therefore, the idea of moving hundreds of billions of Gold Coins out of the Dragon Tomb wasn’t feasible. Amberser needed to consider other ways to obtain the greatest benefit.
And what else of value did the Dragon Race have besides treasures?
Undoubtedly, it was their bodies.
Dragonbones, Dragon Scales, Dragon Blood, Dragon Hearts, Dragon Marrow... all of it was incredibly valuable.
He couldn’t take these things by force; Amberser couldn’t defeat hundreds of dragons by himself.
Besides, although Gareth had just helped trick his father-in-law, he wouldn’t sit by while Amberser slaughtered members of the Dragon Race. He would not be able to get past Miss Bone Dragon either.
In the end, the only way to gain benefits from the Overseas Dragon Clan was through trade.
That simplified things. The Dragon Race was in need of everything. If goods from the mainland that they needed were brought over, naturally there would be dragons willing to trade their scales to shop.
You should never think that trading scales for goods was unreasonable. In his previous life, Amberser had seen someone sell their kidney for a smartphone that would become outdated in a year.
As long as he controlled this trade route tightly, Amberser would be the only middleman. How profitable a monopoly could be had been told by countless predecessors.
But accomplishing this plan was not easy.
First, he had to convince those of the Dragon Race to trade with Amberser instead of opting for roberry.
There was another point, the Dragon Race could never return to the mainland, or how else could he maintain a monopoly?
All this meant that Amberser had to sabotage the Dragon Race’s plan to return, and he had already succeeded halfway.
Perhaps it was the mention of the Dragon Race’s extinction that completely hooked Sevres, for the old dragon could not accept the destruction of his kind. That’s why, even after becoming a Bone Dragon, he still guarded the Dragon Race, despite being disparaged by his living kin, Sevres still wanted to protect the Dragon Race.
This was the complete opposite of the Withered Rose, who, as Laine’s former queen, had always wanted to destroy her own kin.
It was indeed Amberser who reminded Sevres that with the Dragon Race’s current strength, returning to the mainland would certainly mean their annihilation. Previously deceived by the Githyanki, Sevres thought there was hope to return to their homeland, then got caught up in the conflict between the living and the Undead, never giving the matter any thought.
Now he decided to stop other members of the Dragon Race from going to their death.
No matter what, the Dragon Race must not return to the mainland to die; they must not be allowed to face the danger of extinction.
"Please wait here at the Dragon Tomb, I will go and contact my kin."
Sevres hurried away, leaving Amberser and the others behind.
It wasn’t until after the old dragon had left that Melina put down her notebook and asked Amberser very seriously, "Father, what just happened? Why did he still listen to you after you scolded him? I wasn’t daydreaming, but it feels like I missed something."
Before Amberser could explain, Aige also nodded, adding, "Indeed, I was taken aback. At the start, Sevres was clearly targeting you, but in just a few minutes of conversation, you have him willing to work for you loyally?"
Aige was truly amazed. She had only worked with Amberser once before. She knew he had impressive skills then, but to witness the Master of the Dragon Tomb being sweet-talked into foolishness by Amberser, even Aige couldn’t grasp it immediately.
Was it Amberser’s talent that the president had seen that led to his invitation to join?
Amberser didn’t have much to explain. He simply said to Melina with indifference, "When you talk to people, you have to be sincerely looking out for their best interests. They can naturally feel it. Put yourself in their shoes and consider things from their perspective, and you’ll be more likely to spot the contradictions."
"It’s clear at a glance that Sevres values the Dragon Race more than himself, so start there. As long as you make him realize what is poison and what is the antidote for the Dragon Race, he will naturally do what needs to be done. That’s why sincerity is the most crucial technique, Melina. Do you understand?"
After thinking for a long time, Melina said, "I’ll remember that."
Amberser: ...
To remember, rather than understand—is this silly child planning to rote memorize? Never mind, let her just be a carefree princess; don’t force her if she lacks the talent.
Amberser decided to discuss with Withered Rose when he got back, to not trouble this child any further. It was a waste of time and without result.
While Sevres was absent, Amberser began a major collection within the Dragon Tomb again.
He wasn’t greedy: from three Dragonbone Vines growing together, he only took two. He did the same with other materials, always leaving some behind, never extracting them to the point of extinction.
Gareth followed Amberser around, directing him to where the most precious materials in the Dragon Tomb had grown.
Making his father-in-law pay through the nose would have Gareth waking up laughing from his dreams.
The two of them colluded shamelessly, scouring the Dragon Tomb once over, and then carefully arranged things to make the harvested areas less obvious.
After gathering materials estimated to be worth several million Gold Coins, someone returned to the Dragon Tomb.
But this time, it wasn’t Sevres; it was Miss Bone Dragon, whom they hadn’t seen for a long time.
Appearing before them in the form of a Dragon Soul, Pale Bone asked upon seeing Amberser, "What did you tell my father? I saw him rushing off as I was on my way back."
Pale Bone had previously taken the other Bone Dragons to hunt in the Deep Sea, also seeking treasures from the seabed.
This is how the Bone Dragons spent their days: they didn’t need to worry about food, and who knows, they might just dig up something good from under the sea.
But today they hadn’t found anything, and upon returning, she just happened to run into Sevres. Her father had left in such a hurry, he hadn’t even finished speaking.
"Why do you immediately blame me?" Amberser said innocently: "I didn’t do anything. I just had a chat with him."
Pale Bone said very seriously, "Your mouth is more terrifying than a Ninth Circle Spell. If you dare to deceive my father, I won’t let you off!"
Amberser glanced at Gareth and thought no wonder he wanted to have his own stash of money.
Miss Bone Dragon was quite reasonable most of the time, but when it came to her father, she became a bit irrational and impolite.
However, it seemed to make sense: probably from a very young age, Pale Bone had seen her father toil for the sake of the Dragon Race, had watched him struggle to raise her and protect her until she transformed into a Bone Dragon.
The bond they shared was indeed deep, and her agitation was understandable.
But Amberser had already thought of a response. He said to Pale Bone, "Don’t worry. I guarantee I did it for the good of the Dragon Race. I just convinced him to halt the Dragon Race’s plan to return to their ancestral lands. If the Dragon Race returns to the mainland now, it will only provoke dissatisfaction from everyone. Once a war is over, the Dragon Race might go extinct. And do you really think this plan could succeed?"
Pale Bone furrowed her brows and after a moment of thought said, "What do you mean? Are you saying those dragons from the Star Realm are deceiving us?"
Amberser nodded with certainty, "Absolutely. I told you, didn’t I? It was Goddess Tiamat who sent them here from the Star Realm—it’s a plan by a Hell Lord. What good can come from it? I bet plenty of dragons have already been swindled into signing contracts with the Devil, selling even their souls."
Pale Bone, shocked, said, "How could that be? But Tiamat, she’s a dragon too!"
Amberser was baffled upon hearing this; what’s with the Dragon Race making such a big deal out of kinship that they’d even lose their common sense?
"Miss, the Evil Dragon Goddess is not first and foremost a dragon but a Hell Lord, a great Devil. Talking about kinship with a great Devil doesn’t that seem a bit too whimsical?"
"No, that’s just your speculation," Pale Bone, though saying this, trembled in her soul form.
Gareth walked up to Pale Bone, enveloping her with his large frame, and reassuringly said, "Don’t panic. Nothing dangerous will happen to your father. You know what he’s capable of. Besides, no matter what the Evil Dragon Goddess has planned, I’ll handle anything that requires force, and my brother here has the brains. Don’t worry, everything will be alright."
Amberser couldn’t help but scorn Gareth who was flaunting his affection and even roping him into it but considering the materials he had just collected, Amberser decided to forgive him.
Yet, it seemed that the situation was developing in an unfavorable direction.
Sevres had been away for a long time, from day until night, and he had not returned to the Dragon Tomb or sent any word back.
"Are the other Giant Dragons located very far away? Does it require such a lengthy flight? Aren’t there any Teleportation Circles?" Amberser asked.
Pale Bone explained somewhat anxiously, "It is a bit far, but he should have been back by now. Could it be that my father..."
Before she could finish, Gareth suddenly stood up, his hand already bearing a longsword wreathed in black flames.
"Someone is approaching the Dragon Tomb," Gareth said. "It’s those toads!"
