Chapter 396: Chapter 368: A Brief Glimpse into the Future
Faith is the most precious treasure for the vast majority of deities; no deity would trade this for anything. The only way to gain faith is to seize it by force.
Sylvanas was even willing to grant Laila Lesser God status, yet she only gave her a hundred Druids, leaving the rest to be developed slowly on her own.
This shows just how precious believers are.
To obtain faith, one must either turn the faithless into believers or directly snatch the followers of other deities.
Such actions would strike right at the arteries of deities, leading to very sharp conflicts.
Amberser really didn’t want any trouble with the deities, not even the weakest among them.
But sometimes, there’s no choice, if only Rowetta hadn’t come with the intention of freeloading, Amberser would have already reached a cooperation with the Goddess, and wouldn’t have offended the Goddesses of the Evil Camp along the way.
And this time, he wouldn’t offend any deity anymore.
Initially, helping Aige achieve deification was just to gain a divine backer, but every new friend gained turned out to be another enemy, and whereas the friends were new Gods, the enemies were well-established deities—what exactly was he busying himself with?
So, this time, it was impossible to become enemies with this Goddess.
No, rather, it was necessary to avoid antagonizing any deity at all; the Mermaid Goddess Yizhuoluo wasn’t the only one above these seas.
The Deity Faction of the ocean and skies boasts a dozen or twenty deities, like the Conch-people’s God Pesena, the Sharkwa Fishman God Sekola, as well as the Monsters’ God, Dolphin Goddess, and so on, even the Demon Prince Dimogorgen counts as the God of the Yixi Manta Ray among the ocean deities.
Then he might as well gather faith from those creatures abandoned by the gods.
"I came here to do business, not to offend, and definitely not to anger the Gods; amicability brings wealth, amiability brings wealth..." Amberser muttered to himself when Phil suddenly kicked his legs, propelling his body forward.
Then Amberser felt the Ghost Ship slowing down.
Just as he was about to ask what was going on, Melina arrived in front of him and exclaimed, "Father, such a huge shark!"
It was a tremor in the soul, as well as a sound wave from an open mouth; Amberser heard it clearly and immediately extended his senses.
In the deep-sea depths, among the reefs, corals, fish and shrimps... all living and non-living things were enveloped by Amberser’s senses, reflected in his soul as corresponding text.
These were highly detailed descriptions, and Amberser had to sift through them out of habit to filter for relevant content.
Until, he sensed an enormous shadow.
Just as Melina said, it was a shark, its size far greater than that of the Ghost Ship, a massive creature nearly fifty meters long.
The shark’s head was larger than the ship’s bow, and each tooth in its two rows was larger than a shield.
The giant shark swam past the Ghost Ship, its snowy white belly resembling a wall, the currents it stirred causing the Ghost Ship to rock.
Amberser was startled; such an enormous being could easily dismantle the Ghost Ship if it were to attack—rotten or not, who knows if this kind of shark ate carrion.
But Phil and the undead aboard the ship looked eager to try, as though they had spotted desirable prey.
Amberser furrowed his brow; he wasn’t eager for complications before meeting Aige.
Fortunately, Phil stood at the bow, simply clutching his harpoon until the giant shark left; he didn’t throw the harpoon.
The Ghost Ship continued on its way, and Phil, with a look of regret on his face, came over to Amberser and said, "What a pity, a real pity. That was a Sharkwa Fishman-tamed Giant Shark. If it had been wild, we could’ve had ourselves an extra meal today."
Undead don’t need to eat to survive, but most zombies prefer fresh flesh, providing a sense of satisfaction despite not feeling full.
Amberser asked, "Tamed by the Sharkwa Fishmen? How can you tell?"
"Look at the tail. The sharks raised by the Sharkwa Fishmen all have a unique notch in their tails, which is a mark they cut out," Phil explained, as he had been a Sharkwa Fishman in life and was very familiar with the methods of his people.
"We’re in a hurry today, or else I would have taken action. It’s not difficult to kill this shark, but the blood would definitely attract the pursuit of the Sharkwa Fishmen, and then we’d miss the meeting time with the boss," Phil added.
Phil has never feared battle. In these waters, he only ever took orders from Aige; he’d even dare fight the shark if it were an incarnation of Sekola himself.
"What’s the purpose of raising such a shark? Do they eat shark meat?" Amberser inquired.
"No, just as humans generally don’t eat monkey meat, and since Sharkwa Fishmen look a lot like sharks, they generally don’t eat them either. These Giant Sharks are usually raised collectively by the entire tribe, to deal with deep-sea monsters. You know, some deep-sea octopuses are even bigger than this shark. Most Sharkwa Fishmen are only about my size, putting them at a disadvantage against behemoths. That this shark was released to feed indicates there’s a Sharkwa fishman tribe nearby, no further than two hundred nautical miles," explained Phil.
That was already a considerable distance, though the feeding range of a normal shark was vast, to say the least, let alone such a gigantic one; who knew how much fish and shrimp it would need to be satisfied.
However, what concerned Amberser wasn’t this but rather, "This Sharkwa Fishman tribe must have moved here recently, right? Or are you unfamiliar with this current route?"
Scratching his head, Phil replied, "You know, you’ve reminded me, esteemed guest. There shouldn’t be any Sharkwa Fishmen around here; how did they suddenly move in? Don’t they know this is Silent Night Pirate Group’s territory?"
"Probably because of the Githyanki. A hundred thousand Githyanki and a few dozen dragons need to eat. Their territory must have been taken, forcing these Sharkwa Fishmen to migrate," said Amberser.
Phil shook his head, "Something’s not right. The sea has always been plentiful with food, and the Githyanki I’ve seen aren’t much for swimming, let alone fighting at sea. Red Dragons can’t go underwater either, and fishing around islands should be their limit; it’s unlikely they could threaten the Sharkwa Fishmen in the deep sea."
"So many Githyanki, and they can’t affect it?" asked Amberser.
"Esteemed guest, you don’t know how vast the sea is. If you were to scrape up the entire continent and dump it into the sea, it wouldn’t fill much. The tallest mountain on land is only a few kilometers high, while the sea holds trenches tens of thousands of meters deep. An additional hundred thousand or so Githyanki would barely affect the sea, let alone steal all of the Sharkwa Fishmen’s food," Phil asserted.
"Is that so?" Amberser said, curiously stroking his chin. What then could be the reason for this sudden migration of the Sharkwa Fishmen?
Suddenly, Amberser had an odd premonition. This was not a coincidence, but rather a hint from destiny.
Maybe it was worth trying to divine it.
Amberser attempted to cast the Dice of Destiny.
As a Diviner Mage who wielded the Power of Destiny, one shouldn’t use it carelessly; who knew if the Goddess of Fate was in a bad mood and a careless divination would foretell one’s own grim future.
So, Amberser only resorted to using the Dice of Destiny for divination when the premonition was strong because it was the Goddess of Fate hinting that he should hurry and look into the future; ignoring it would be asking for a kick from the Goddess of Fate.
Amberser needed no more than a slight hint, just a little clue would suffice.
The dice were thrown, spinning unseen in a place where no one could watch; the ghostly shadows of the Dice of Destiny couldn’t even stir the seawater, as if non-existent, visible only to those who possessed the Power of Destiny.
When the Dice of Destiny stopped, a blurry image appeared before Amberser.
With a keen perception, Amberser said in confusion, "What’s this... a wedding? Whose wedding could it be?"
