Chapter 793: Volume 24: Beacon Fires Link the Camps, Chapter 6: No Mercy in Slaughter
Onia was somewhat surprised by the performance of the Caucasus’s lower-tier species armies. In his mind, faced with the roar of the Thunder God from the heavens, each of these inferior species should be running about in panic, but the scene before him was far beyond his expectations.
Although two infantry formations had already crumbled, there was no sign of a complete rout. To speak frankly, the effect of the thunder-based combination magic attack was not very good. These tough lower-tier species were certainly terrified of thunder magic, but that was more of a psychological fear; in reality, their thick armor and tower shields greatly reduced the damage. Even though the infantry of the Barbarian Soldiers had scattered, the opponent was clearly prepared. Officers immediately rushed forward to scold the panicked stragglers back into formation. The performance of these scattered soldiers astonished Onia; they were able to regroup behind the main camp in a very short amount of time. Although they were not yet able to return to their original combat strength immediately, this was enough to make one wary. Such an army was unimaginable for Onia.
What surprised Onia even more was the adaptability of the subsequent Barbarian and Half-Beastmen infantry formations to the thunder-based magic attacks. They kept changing their formations, on one hand evading thunder magic attacks, and on the other hand consciously speeding up their advance, hoping to make contact with the Army of Homer as soon as possible to force the mages to hold back. This intent was very clear, and it made Onia admire the flexibility of the Caucasus Army commanders.
"Onia, why do these low-tier species have such good psychological endurance and adaptability?" The Veiled Saintess, who had been silently standing by Onia’s side, also realized the abnormality of the situation and asked in a deep voice.
"Miss Iliana, it seems that the Caucasians came prepared. Not only are they aware of our arrival, but they have also undergone targeted training for this," Onia nodded, his gaze still sweeping over Battlefield, "This is not a good sign. However, now is not the time to jump to conclusions. Perhaps we should change the type of magic."
"Hmm, Light Magic is not the most effective against these low-tier species. Let Salianco and the others give these damned Barbarians a good lesson with a Fire Magic Array," the Veiled Saintess’s veil fluttered slightly, as if her mood had been affected.
"Alright, I need to go help them out. If we’re going to play, let’s finish them off once and for all!" Onia also nodded in agreement. A Fire Magic Array was undoubtedly the best way to deal with such large-scale group charges, and turning these Barbarians and Half-Beastmen into a bunch of roasted pigs was also a pleasant thought. However, it would take more than one or two mages to complete a Fire Magic Array capable of ending the battle in one go, not even a Light Saint could do it.
Detection Magic immediately conveyed to Komer the crazily dense changes of fire elements in the air, "Damn it, the scum of the Church of Light, they plan to use Fire Magic to deal with my precious Soldiers!"
Although Divine Radiance had consumed a considerable amount of Komer’s Mana, it had achieved the effect he desired. The milky white column of light quietly suffused over Clarence, allowing the Earth-based magician to feel for the first time how rich and pure the magic power within his body was. Earth’s Rift was a large-scale high-level Earth Magic, which was not very useful in a mage duel or solo combat, but it had unexpected advantages in war. This was why Earth-based magicians were quite favored by armies.
Sir Lecler’s instincts had almost saved the entire Knights regiment. The slight tremor from Underground was definitely not something that hooves could cause, and the barely perceptible aura of magic also made Lecler’s hair stand on end. His extreme alertness to magic attacks kept him constantly detecting changes in the magical elements of his surroundings. At this moment, the strong aura of Earth Elements made him instantly aware that something was going to happen.
Lecler’s wealth of combat experience allowed him to react correctly in an instant. It was almost like a roar from the depths of his soul that made the Knights subconsciously rein in their horses and slow down. Lecler’s angry roar saved the lives of hundreds of Knights at least.
Reining in the horses with such force nearly snapped the bridles. The Knights’ long-established discipline helped them avoid even greater losses. Crisscrossing ditches appeared without warning in a twenty-meter radius in front of the Knights regiment. If it wasn’t for Lecler’s sharp shout, more than half of them would have been trapped in the ditches.
Even so, nearly two hundred apprentice Knights still plunged headfirst into the chasms, several meters deep. The overlapping cries of men and whinnying of horses were incessant. The apprentice Knights who fell into the ditches had clearly never experienced such a terrifying scene before; the sudden emergence of dangerous pits in flat ground was something they could not accept for a moment.
Sir Lecler, Bronin, and several senior Knights, who had been moving forward, fell into the complex dilemma of trenches without exception. However, for them, the obstacle posed by the terrain was not worth mentioning. The ditch area of several tens of meters could not stop the Knights regiment from advancing. With a few skilled leaps, Lecler and his companions easily jumped out of the ditch area, earning a look of admiration from Vladimir Koff and Solonberg, who were watching coldly from the opposite side.
"Good skills! Solonberg, the guy in the purple robe is mine!" Vladimir Koff’s usually stern face broke into a rare smile, thinking it was just a display of magic, and that he was leading these brutish Barbarians merely as a backdrop. But now it seemed there were still opponents worth fighting in the enemy camp. Vladimir Koff was overjoyed—after all, a war without a splendid experience was simply too dull.
"Mmm, that knight in white is mine, it’s settled!" Solonberg didn’t argue with Vladimir Koff. Bronin’s agile figure had also piqued his great interest. To cross swords with such a knight was the only thing that wouldn’t make this battle a waste. He had no interest in one-sided slaughter of Soldiers; as a high-ranking knight who had reached his level, he only wanted more opportunities to sharpen his skills and improve himself.
Komer glanced at Clarence, whose face was pale. The fellow had given it his all, and even with the great support from his Divine Radiance, he was already overextended and powerless. If he could perform Earth’s Rift one more time, that would be wonderful. Unfortunately, their Mage force was too weak, with Clarence as the only Earth-based magician.
Sir Lecler’s keen intuition had saved the Knights—what a pity that the painstakingly arranged Earth’s Rift had only reaped hundreds of novice Knights. It seemed grand and successful, but the elite of the Knights regiment were largely unaffected, and Sir Lecler was still as splendid as ever. Komer looked back, somewhat regrettably, at Lecler, who was still riding forward, preparing to attack from the flank. The fellow was truly a talent, a pity that he was a direct descendant of Philip’s line. It would be wonderful if he could serve under Komer.
After restoring Clarence with a Divine Blessing healing spell, Clarence’s color slightly improved. But it was unrealistic to expect him to release another large-scale spell like Earth’s Rift now, even with Komer’s support. Without a two to three-hour magic power recovery period, Clarence could only use medium and small-sized magic to console himself.
When the battlefield was shrouded in the aura of Fire Elements, Komer’s Wrath of the Water God spell was also ready. He realized that this passive response to the enemy’s attack would eventually cost them. But facing the mad gathering of the Fire Elements, he had no choice; only after this hurdle could he have a real chance to counterattack.
Blaze Burning Sky!
Both Newman and Sheferley revealed a look of horror. Half the sky turned a strange pale gold color, which instantly transformed into a crimson light that cascaded down slowly yet resolutely. Like a raging river, like mercury flooding the earth, with an unstoppable momentum, it swept over the frontline of the Knights regiment.
Scorching flames swept over the ground, vegetation turned to ash, and the earth blackened. The air was filled with an unbearable stench of char. Almost before they could react, two formations of Barbarian Soldiers were rolling and struggling in the flames with agonizing screams. After a few seconds, their sturdy bodies were reduced to shrunken charred figures—everyone present learned a profound lesson from the unimaginably powerful Fire Magic Array.
A moment later, the Wrath of the Water God arrived, facing the still-pressing wall of fire. The curtain of water bravely withstood the flames, and the clash of two drastically different powers caused the front line to display a kind of
Nearly bursting at the sockets with rage, Komer had been mentally prepared, but seeing his Soldiers turned to char in an instant, and the scene of them crying and rolling in pain stabbed deeply into his heart. These Soldiers were the foundation of his campaign to conquer Homer and even all of Nicosia. Those damned pests of the Church of Light had joined hands to use such violent and brutal magic against them. This had transcended mere military conflict and had become a battle of Mages! He seemed to have forgotten that this was a fight to the death; it was either the end of Philip or Komer’s debut! Either the disappearance of Homer or the downfall of Caucasus!
Komer, with red-rimmed eyes, almost snarled through clenched teeth, "Mihailovich, release all your Metal Magic Dolls at once!"
After roaring these words, Komer, with a ferocious expression, silently used Magic Transmission to send a message afar, "Uma, it’s time for your troops to make their debut! Don’t disappoint me, target—Royal Court Magicians! Kill without mercy!"
