Chapter 760: Volume 22: Revival and Rise Chapter 19: I am not Weak
```
The shock brought by the Half-beast Army’s arrival in Livonia was even beyond what Komer himself had expected. The entire Southwest Region, including the Black Forest region and the Pomorie region, experienced significant tremors, and these tremors continued to spread throughout the surrounding areas in an exponential ripple effect. Central Nicosia’s Yassu and Banite Region, the northern Zaire, and even the farther south Kingdom of Basarabia, all felt the shockwaves.
No one had anticipated that an army composed entirely of half-beast soldiers would suddenly appear deep within the Kingdom or even on the Blue Continent. Such a ferocious and imposing army, even though ostensibly under the command of a small aristocrat lord from the kingdom, undeniably left the populace, already terrified by Beastman invasions, sleepless at night. No one could guarantee that this army wouldn’t suddenly turn hostile. If they were to raise their weapons, who in the Southwest Region could resist them?
"Your Highness, the mood in and around the city is tumultuous. Those nobles and traders are terrified. Now, inside Livonia City, there is an eerie calm. Shops are shuttered, residents are afraid to step outside, fearful that the half-beasts might suddenly give in to their animalistic instincts and ravage the people," someone reported.
Picking up his wine glass, Palermo couldn’t decide whether to feel relieved or worried. When he initially reviewed the Half-beast Army with Komer, he too was terrified. When half-beasts, fierce and brutish, were fully armed and imbued with military discipline, the visual and psychological impact was overwhelming. Especially seeing the densely packed squads of half-beast soldiers marching in neat steps toward you, Palermo felt his legs go weak, as if he might collapse at any moment.
"Oh? And do you think these half-beasts will obey our mortal commands?" Katya’s face was inscrutable, but Palermo knew all too well—the more composed she appeared, the more complicated her thoughts were.
"I’m not sure about the disposition of these half-beasts since I’ve had no prior contact with them. However, Viscount Komer has sent his close friend Knight Ilot to command this army. I’ve observed that the half-beast officers hold a considerable respect for Knight Ilot. It seems that Komer’s control over this Half-beast Army is quite strong." Palermo weighed his words carefully. "However, these nobles and traders in the city are unaware of this. They have been frightened out of their wits, deeply fearing that these half-beasts might suddenly intrude into their estates, plunder their treasures and wives, and perhaps even devour them."
"Hmph, all the better. Were they not always afraid of Hoffman’s army attacking? Did they not think I lacked the power to resist Hoffman’s pressure? With such a fierce force backing us, what more do they have to worry about?" A hint of scorn surfaced on Katya’s face at last. "These cowards want to keep their interests safe but dread the risk. Always wavering, now I’ve proven to them that I have the capability to defend their interests. If they can provide me with sufficient support, I can offer them even more."
"But Viscount Komer also said that this Half-beast Army in Livonia only numbers two thousand, and he’s not confident that they can defeat Hoffman’s Blood Lion Corps should conflict arise," Palermo interjected, licking his lips.
"Then let Komer transfer all his forces from Caucasus and Leon to me! If we break Hoffman, I can give him the entirety of Livonia!" Katya’s voice rose sharply, her face flushing, her eyes ablaze with authority. "I’m not only after the throne of Nicosia. I want Zaire too. I want everyone to know not only do I deserve to sit upon the throne, but I also have the power to bring back a whole kingdom! Palermo, did you see what he brought at the end? Dragons! Dragon Warriors! You know what this means? Why didn’t he bring the Dragon Warriors to Livonia? What more does he want?!"
Palermo opened his mouth as if to say something but then said nothing. It was an unwise move to try to interject at this moment. The princess was emotionally charged, and it was best to let her cool down a bit.
"Palermo, tell me, does Komer have some deal with the barbarians? Not only did the barbarians send him Earthwalking Dragons, but they’ve also trained Earth Dragon Warriors for him. I’ve even heard that Caucasus has been breeding Thunder Pengs! Those are considered sacred birds by the barbarians. I don’t know what other cards Komer might have up his sleeve. What exactly is he planning? Don’t tell me you know nothing about it. Most of the food he used to get was supplied by you—surely you must be aware of something," Katya’s piercing gaze fixed on Palermo made him feel like he had a target on his back.
"Your Highness, I do not fully understand Viscount Komer’s thoughts, but his ties with the barbarians are indeed very close. In Caucasus and Leon, a considerable number of barbarians are involved in the construction and production. I’m also aware that a significant portion of the food imported to Caucasus is provided to the barbarians, which naturally implies some form of reciprocation. However, I also know that Caucasus has enforced a strict embargo on the barbarian-controlled territories, especially regarding military supplies such as weapons and armor. There have been several traders caught smuggling weapons to the barbarians who were punished by confiscation of all properties and labor. His contradictory actions make it difficult to speculate on his intentions. Perhaps he only intends to use the barbarians’ manpower and unique resources. But one thing is certain: the viscount is not a generous man. He is always plotting to return the pain inflicted upon him manifold," Palermo explained.
Palermo almost laid bare his thoughts about Komer, revealing everything he held in his heart. In truth, Palermo’s views on Komer were also full of contradictions. Nearly every one of Komer’s actions was unexpectedly surprising. And there was one thing Palermo was certain of but did not say, and that was that Viscount Komer was no ordinary man and his ambition could not be easily fathomed by others.
"You mean to say that he intends to deal with Philip?" Katya’s spirits lifted.
"Your Highness, it’s not surprising. Every young man and woman’s first love is so unforgettable, and when your hopeful dreams are suddenly destroyed, replaced by forced exile and banishment, and upon your difficult return, what welcomes you is yet another exile and assassination attempt, with the love of your heart having turned fickle and become another’s plaything in bed, how many people can endure such humiliation and hatred? I believe Komer does not lack the desire to strike back, but the power in his hands forces him to restrain himself. However, I am convinced that once he gains that power, it will all come to pass."
Palermo’s research and understanding of Komer were quite accurate, at least he had grasped some aspects of Komer’s mental state to a significant degree. But it was only certain aspects, while in other aspects unknown to him, Komer’s thoughts were much more complex than Palermo could guess.
Katya shook her head subconsciously; Komer was not so simple, but it was also difficult for her to guess what his true intentions were now. Although the two had formed a special relationship, it was merely one of physical intimacy. It was hard for anyone to say what that relationship really amounted to, Katya was also clear on this.
However, Komer’s intentions were not important at the moment. For Katya, what she needed now was to leverage the martial power of Caucasus to help her ascend to the throne and then use that same power to help her reclaim Jazair. The vehement questioning just before was more of a formal front, as she had perceived that Palermo, her trusted aide, seemed to have some unspoken understanding with Komer. To some extent, it had even exceeded her own limits of tolerance, so she needed to give him a warning through his own words, telling Komer not to try any tricks.
"Palermo, tell Komer that no matter what he’s thinking, he needs to understand that our alliance is mutually beneficial, but our division would lead to mutual downfall. Everything he desires is only possible if I succeed. Without me, Hoffman and Philip would easily dispose of him like crushing an ant. Only by helping me resolve the current troubles can he avoid living like a ghost in the shadows. Tell him I can solve the troubles he does not wish to face, and do not think I am unaware of everything."
When Palermo conveyed Katya’s words to Komer, who had returned to Quke Valley, Komer couldn’t help but laugh.
Katya’s performance had not disappointed him; at the very least, her words proved that he had not made the wrong bet.
If a royal successor relied solely on the forces of others, namely his martial power, to attain everything, that would be truly ridiculous. Without demonstrating a hint of significant strength, it would be hard to convince anyone of her potential to claim the grand position in the Kingdom of Nicosia. Komer was not like those shortsighted nobles and traders—a risk, indeed, should be proportional to the reward, but if the chances of success were too low, he would not hastily commit his support. He was only willing to stand by the person closest to success. However, Komer had not yet figured out which high-ranking official of the Church of Light this woman, who had once writhed and moaned beneath him, had connected with. Frenster? Vazinsky? Noyola? Or even Julius?
Playing with the ivory toothpick in his hand, Komer thoughtfully explored how the other party might have come to learn of his grudge with the Religious Court, while also considering whether he should appropriately increase his stakes.
