Chapter 761: Volume 22: Revival and Rise Chapter 20: Chaos
Komer turned his gaze toward the North, where the actions of the beastmen had undoubtedly posed a significant challenge to the Church of Light. Now, the Church had to seriously consider how to respond to the crisis of faith among the citizens of the Kingdom of Nicosia caused by the beastmen’s actions. If an image of a religion could be so easily shattered by the martial power of beastmen from the Northern Wasteland, the resulting impact was simply unimaginable. Without strong measures to reverse the situation, it would spell an irreversible disaster for the Church of Light.
What should he do to capitalize on this opportunity, though? Should he fully support the development of the Dark Lineage in Caucasus and Leon, and even extend their influence to Livonia? Or should he cautiously support the Salvation Society’s infiltration efforts in Northern Nicosia? Or should he take advantage of the Church of Light’s preoccupation in the North to publically raise the Dark Holy Church’s flag in the South?
Komer was somewhat hesitant.
The Salvation Society possessed a considerable, albeit complex and subtle, potential across the Kingdom of Nicosia and the entire Northern Alliance. The fact that great aristocrats like Melkin could publicly side with Katya as needed showed their devout commitment to their faith. In reality, Komer never believed that the true teachings of the Church of Light were incompatible with the pursuits of the Dark Lineage. In Komer’s view, it was the garbage and scum that had truly seized control of the Church of Light who were desecrating its genuine teachings. If the Salvation Society could be given support in various aspects, its inherent strength could soon form a powerful network in the Northern Region. Although still unable to contend with the Church of Light, it could very well help Komer counteract the Church’s influence, even potentially causing a split within the Church.
This prospect was quite enticing, but it also carried considerable uncertainty. Especially concerning whether the Salvation Society would continue to cooperate or adhere to his demands once they truly gained the upper hand. Komer had no assurance about this because it wasn’t a force he controlled entirely on his own but was more like an ally, a collaborator. Komer was unwilling to see such a force exist beyond his control.
What about expanding the Dark Forces’ influence into Livonia or even the entire Southwest Region? It seemed the Church of Light’s influence had significantly waned due to the beastmen’s invasion, but the faith that had formed over a long time wasn’t something that could be easily dismantled. The Dark Lineage’s image in the North was not good, and it was even perceived as evil and negative. Such a hasty move into the heartland of the kingdom might backfire.
Then what about focusing on the South? This undoubtedly had a very bright prospect. Komer believed that with the current strength of the Dark Lineage, establishing a strong presence in the South while the Church of Light was unable to pay attention was not a difficult task. Furthermore, the good support base of the populace in the South could provide a reliable development space for the growth of the Dark Holy Church. Using this as an opportunity to build the Dark Holy Church into a faith entity like those in the North, and then competing with the Northern Church of Light for influence in the Central Region of the Continent, was definitely a very solid strategy.
Komer carefully analyzed the pros and cons of the three possibilities. The Dark Forces’ immediate entry into the heartland of the Kingdom of Nicosia was not yet mature, but they could carefully build strongholds. The Salvation Society could also be supported to a certain extent, allowing them to gradually reveal themselves to attract the attention of the Church of Light. Komer had a premonition that there must be sympathizers and supporters, even puppeteers, of the Salvation Society among the upper echelons of the Church of Light. Otherwise, the Salvation Society could not have survived so resiliently and be so well-hidden. Internal strife is often more intense than any other, and Komer hoped that the Salvation Society could directly confront the Church of Light, depleting their power, and in doing so, win more opportunities for the Dark Lineage.
Implementing a three-pronged approach was Komer’s final conclusion, but he had to maintain a clever balance in both strategy and degree, not dominating the spotlight, yet ensuring the situation remained sustainable in the long term. Only then could the Dark Lineage have more time to accumulate power.
Vazinsky chewed over the news with great interest. Although he had already vaguely sensed some abnormalities, Vazinsky still found it hard to believe that Frenster would dare to act so insanely and boldly. Compared to Frenster’s actions, Noyola could only be considered a coward.
Information from various sources proved that Frenster and his subordinates were undoubtedly greatly connected to the beastmen’s breach of Nicosia’s border fortresses. The rapid progress in siege weapon technology among the beastman was eye-catching. For a force that had never made such advancements, a considerable number of siege instruments suddenly appeared among the Beastman Army, in stark contrast to their sporadic use of such instruments in the past. It was impossible for humans to transport such a large number of siege instruments into beastmen’s hands without being detected by the human garrisons along the border. This meant only one thing: the beastmen had learned to manufacture siege instruments themselves, or at least could produce some ordinary instruments under the guidance of human craftsmen.
Either scenario spelled disaster for humans. However, the appearance of a large number of witches in the Beastman Army was what truly shocked the entire Church of Light. Humans had always thought that beastmen only had an advantage in individual strength, but were far inferior to mortals in intelligence and wisdom. But the emergence of witches had certainly overturned that view, leading to a seismic shift in the power dynamics. Beastmen with witches could now, like mortals, wield the ability to harness natural forces, which in the context of warstripped mortals of their erstwhile exclusive privilege of magic power. Of course, Vazinsky also paid close attention to whether beastmen witches shared the same abilities as mortal mages when invoking their natural powers. To his slight relief, beastmen witches seemed more like novices in this regard and, both in form and substance, were still quite different from mortal magic power.
This was an era of tumult and change. Vazinsky let out a soft sigh. His Holiness the Pope’s health was in steady decline, especially after performing the Great Prophecy Spell, he had become exceedingly frail, almost housebound, with even eating and drinking becoming difficult. Frenster was pursuing a maverick path, drifting further from him, and Noyola was nearly possessed by insanity in his pursuit of truth. With the Dark Forces on the rise in the South, and the Continent caught in vast and complex turmoil, which direction would it head?
