Chapter 674: Volume Nineteen: Lost Horizon Chapter Four: Calamity
"Lord Noyola, I regret that we have met under such circumstances. Fate is indeed unpredictable, it seems we’re destined to cross paths," Rebry had fully regained his usual carefree demeanor, casually shaking his mage robe. The scepter in his hand had already silently slipped into his grasp. Facing powerhouses like Noyola and Lorenzo, no overlord on the Continent would dare to underestimate them. They represent the highest law enforcement authority of the Church of Light in the mortal world; whoever dares to provoke them, they can cast into the Abyss.
"Why? Why must it be this way, Rebry? Couldn’t we have avoided this? We didn’t wish to meet like this, but why do you continually defy the rules and provoke our bottom line?" Lorenzo had a look of pity on his face, yet the flicker of excitement in his eyes betrayed his true thoughts. It had been a long time since he encountered a worthy opponent. To cross wits with the former star of the Church of Light was not a vain trip to the Caucasus after all.
"Lord Lorenzo, I must say your words are problematic. Bottom line? What is a bottom line? Are the rules and bottom lines set by you meant to disdain all the laws of the world? Are all things in the world expected to operate and live according to your intentions? If you want us to live, we live; if you want us to die, we die—is that the rule and bottom line you set?" Rebry’s face seemed to lose some of its wrinkles, and a strange smile spread across his radiant face, "I do not intend to comply, and many others don’t either."
"Hmph, Rebry, you should be aware of the laws of the Church of Light," Lorenzo’s face turned somber, but was immediately interrupted by Komer who had been silent until now, "Is it that those who are with me thrive, and those against me perish?"
"Insolent! Are you that lord from the Caucasus, Viscount Komer? Don’t you realize that the citizens in your territory are being led step by step toward the Dark Abyss under your leadership? I cannot fathom why an aristocratic child like you would fall so low. Could it be that illegitimate lineage lacks the resistance to filth and darkness? If so, that’s the misfortune of the Caucasus!" Lorenzo, clearly less cordial than Rebry, viewed everything as the fault of this damned small aristocrat. Eliminate the root of the problem, and all would be resolved.
The word ’illegitimate’ struck Komer’s heart like a whip, reopening long-sealed scars, with fresh blood seeping through. His face contorted with distortion, "Lorenzo, don’t presume because you belong to the Court you can decide everything. I will tell you, there are many things in the world that the Church of Light cannot know, and the Church does not cover the sky with one hand."
Having successfully ignited the opponent’s anger, Lorenzo’s expression became unusually mild and calm, he nodded slightly and said with a smile, "Ah, the fox’s tail finally comes out. Very well, I am also looking forward to your performance. Things that dare to blaspheme the God of Light, I will ensure you never find peace."
Noyola seemed not to hear the clash of words between Komer and Lorenzo, focusing more on Rebry, a Light Mage he had once valued greatly. But now, fate had brought them to this impasse. Caru had become a powerhouse in the Court, second only to himself and Lorenzo. Rebry, once Caru’s equal, was now overshadowed by darkness. Perhaps this time, he could help clear the dark dust shrouding Rebry’s soul, allowing him a rebirth.
"Rebry, must we take this step?" Seeing the defiant look in the other’s eyes, Noyola knew his words would be futile, but he still wanted to try, "Can we not resolve this in some other way?"
"Sorry, I don’t think we can, Noyola. You know that you and I have always stood our ground; no one can change me, just as I cannot change you." A similarly regretful smile appeared on his lips; Rebry finally revealed his magic wand from his sleeve.
His pupils narrowed, Noyola knew the magic wand had been revealed, a clear indication that there would be no surrender; the battle was unavoidable. That small aristocrat also seemed to be at loggerheads with Lorenzo, with no intention of yielding. In fact, his demeanor was also aggressively pressing. It seems that it might be because the sword of the Court hadn’t been unsheathed for too long, many had forgotten its true nature.
"Rebry, since we both have our convictions, it appears there’s nothing more to say between us. I do not like resolving disputes this way, but it’s often unavoidable. I see your lord friend probably thinks the same. How about this: you and I have a contest, and let Lorenzo match up with that lord... What do you say?" He said, the gentle smile on his face flowing like a tranquil stream, his demeanor still so measured and natural, even at the brink of the looming battle.
"No, Noyola, let me savor the old friendship with him instead. It has been a long while since I’ve tasted such a flavor, and of course, if this lord sir doesn’t want to be left out, I wouldn’t mind him joining our symphony," Lorenzo interrupted Noyola’s intention.
Noyola’s brows furrowed slightly. As soon as he set foot inside Damarlinsk Castle, he felt the strong mana atmosphere enveloping the castle. What surprised him the most was that this mana atmosphere was not pure Dark Magic Power but rather the massive radiation released from the Magic Array underneath the Obelisk. Although he had already learned from Caru and Boritz that there must be various oddities including Magic Arrays within Damarlinsk Castle, as someone who had dealt with Dark Forces for a prolonged period, Noyola did not care about those Dark Spells and Dark Magic Arrays. Light exists solely to cleanse darkness, and it was the duty of the Court to eradicate the breeding grounds for it. He had weathered many storms, but the feeling he got from Damarlinsk Castle was unlike any other experience.
The feeling he got from both Rebry and that small lord was peculiar. Rebry was still passable since he came from the Church of Light; even if he was tainted by darkness, his essence could never be washed away. Noyola was also confident that he could help this lost sheep return to the embrace of the God of Light. However, the sense he got from that small lord was one of foggy chaos, a mystery shrouded in impenetrable fog. Noyola had never felt this way before. Though he believed he could handle the situation as he always did, he had an uneasy premonition that this confrontation might bring many unexpected events.
He cast a deep glance at the Obelisk, which, under the sunlight, refracted a strange light. Shadowy figures rose and fell in Noyola’s heart. This was not a Dark Magic Array; it seemed more like a Star Magic Array that could be activated with certain spells. At this moment, with the sun at its zenith, it was the prime time for the release of Star Magic. Perhaps it wasn’t the right time to come; should they have chosen an overcast day with thick clouds? Noyola chuckled at himself. When had he become so unconfident?
Despite the impact of the Magic Array, Lorenzo was somewhat underestimating that guy. Perhaps Lorenzo could handle Rebry and that small lord, but not with his current attitude. Reminding him now would only have the opposite effect. Yet, with Noyola standing aside, he believed these two would not be able to cause any trouble, especially with Caru and Boritz monitoring the area. Anything untoward should be unable to escape their grasp.
With a slight step back, Noyola signaled his intent to withdraw, but he did not show any desire to leave the scene. Rebry sighed inwardly; Noyola was always Noyola, never acting without certainty. If it was only Lorenzo, he and Komer, if they fought with all their might and used the power of the Magic Array, there might be a chance for a miracle. But with Noyola still standing by, all hope was thoroughly dashed. That was fine, he thought. There was no longer any reason to have a troubled mind. Now, he would focus on showing his best in this fight.
Without any warning, Rebry’s ample robe billowed violently, and his crystal-clear eyes fixed on the composed face of Lorenzo. The clear sky suddenly darkened, a huge tornado pillar forming and spinning in mid-air, its piercing scream almost materializing out of nowhere, twisting and aiming towards the distant Lorenzo.
"A tornado pillar?! Rebry, have you fallen to only performing such low-level Wind Magic? That would be disappointing," Lorenzo said coldly, waving his hand without even using a spell. A strong burst of light exploded from around his body, "You should witness the capabilities of our Bright Holy Teaching!"
White light collided in the air and coalesced into a Light Ball confined within a certain space in an instant, hurtling towards the incoming tornado pillar. The brilliant Light Ball burst apart at the moment of impact, the powerful light energy suddenly breaking free from its constraints and scattering in all directions. The still-rotating tornado pillar, meeting the head-on surge of light energy, scattered away.
With a soft hum from his nostrils, Rebry ignored the verbal provocation. The duel had only just begun. He would let this vanity-filled man see his true level after these years. With a light shake of his Magic Wand, the dispersed Wind Element, as if receiving an instruction, swiftly regathered. But this time, it did not recombine into a large tornado pillar; instead, in the air, it twisted into countless blue-black conical funnels, a strange color displaying the wind element compressed to its limit, filled with a Magic Power capable of devouring everything.
