Chapter 673: Volume Nineteen: Lost Horizon Chapter Three: Inescapable Doom
The fruitless search of Bruce Fortress did not surprise Caru and Boritz; the young lord in question was just as sensitive in these matters as the craftiest of veterans. He wouldn’t allow anyone to gain leverage over him concerning this outpost at the frontier between Caucasus and Leon, and Caru and Boritz were well prepared for that eventuality.
The gathering of adventurer teams here did, however, take them aback. It was not until they understood the so-called rumors of the Goddess of Nature’s treasure that they realized what was going on. Although they didn’t grasp the subtleties of the situation, intuition told Caru that this somewhat absurd event of treasure surely had something to do with the young lord. After all, the Essence God Ring truly did exist in the hands of Princess Galle Vero, and Mr. Mundell, the head mage of the Galle Mage Group, had confirmed it. Moreover, the young lord possessed the Tianmiao God Ring, a legendary treasure of water-based magic. Despite these undeniable proofs affirming the existence of the Goddess’s treasure, Caru could not fathom how such news had leaked, nor to what end. He did not think of the young lord as someone simple-minded or unguarded in speech; his every move was cloaked with ill intent.
Nevertheless, this problem was unrelated to their own mission to Caucasus. No matter what trickery the young lord had up his sleeve, as long as they could corner him in Damarlinsk Castle, Caru believed everything would come to light. The closer they got to Damarlinsk Castle, the stronger his premonition became—stronger even than when he had first escaped from there—convinced that the young lord had many secrets that, once revealed, would shock everyone.
The swarm of adventurer teams caught Komer and Maha Gummi off guard, never having anticipated that the Goddess of Nature’s treasure would draw so many adventurers. Among them were several renowned elite teams from the Continent; two had even ventured into the boundless lands, and though they hadn’t penetrated far, the mere attempt granted them a place of honor in the Adventurers’ Guild.
Komer welcomed these formidable teams with great enthusiasm and sincerity. After all, their arrival could incite an adventuring frenzy throughout Caucasus and Leon, significantly advancing the adventure business in both regions. The various influences brought by these people was not to be underestimated.
Many adventurers, weary from their careers, would often seek different employment and employers. If Komer could provide a satisfactory environment for these adventurer teams, he believed many would consider a change in profession after having their fill of the frenzy over the Goddess’s treasure. Whether in the military or the mage forces, he was in desperate need of talent, and the warriors and mages from these teams could be the best recruits for his forces.
From the very beginning, Komer had no intention of letting these futile folks leave at will. With some careful planning, recruiting some experts and strong individuals from these adventurer teams was not impossible, especially given the flourishing conditions in Caucasus and Leon. Many of those adventurers who felt they had no prospects in their careers wouldn’t be able to resist such temptations.
The relaxed racial environment in Caucasus and Leon also left a deep impression on those teams. Beastmen and Barbarians could live and settle freely on this land, and Half-beastmen could even become personal guards of the Lord, which was an honor unimaginable in any mortal territory. Even Beastmen and Barbarians enjoyed citizen rights; hence, it was no question for other races. Many adventurers from the South, including Dwarves, Gnomes, Elves, and Giants, were not uncommon among these teams, and the harmonious climate in Caucasus resonated with them. Some of the older adventurers were already inquiring about instructor positions in the Caucasus self-defense forces, while Elf priests and Dwarf craftsmen were also very interested in acquiring full citizen rights in this land.
Puber was timely in promoting various policies in places like Bruce, Banassia, Ugru, Bahomon, and Mattdam, especially those targeting skilled professionals, immediately catching the eye of many. From land development to housing construction subsidies, from loan guarantee benefits to tax relief, Puber almost turned this fever ignited by the Goddess’s treasure into a successful policy promotion event. Although most of those flocking to the area were adventurer teams and individuals, Puber knew that once these adventurers left, they would spread what they had seen and heard everywhere, particularly among those of other races accustomed to mortal society yet discriminated against. This place would be a strong magnet for them.
But everything had to stop here.
When Komer felt the vast pressure surrounding him and saw a hint of panic on Rebury’s face—which was always calm—right outside his door, he knew that this time he probably couldn’t escape his fate.
The immense pressure almost instantly sealed off Damarlinsk Castle from the outside world, as if layers of tight air curtains covered the entire sky, even suffusing the air with a tangible sense of suffocation. Two figures appeared on the towers of Damarlinsk Castle, one to the southeast and the other to the northwest. Komer personally saw four Half-beastman Guards roaring as they hurled sharp javelins, which turned to ash in mid-air, not even leaving a speck of dust behind, and the two figures didn’t so much as blink.
Just when Komer wondered if the Pope of the Church of Light himself had come, his gaze caught Caru’s plain face and Boritz’s smirk of arrogance. It turned out to be the madman and lunatic, Noyola!
His gaze flitted over the two distant figures facing each other, yet Komer still hadn’t figured out which one was Noyola. The power of both had exceeded Komer’s imagination, either could destroy him several times over, let alone the presence of two individuals with equal strength, which entirely dashed Komer’s hopes of escape.
At this point, further explanations were utterly meaningless. The Court, having already identified him, wouldn’t believe anything he said, especially with Caru and Boritz present.
"Lord, I’m afraid we are in a bit of trouble," Rebury said, his face which had been rife with panic now replaced by a calm confidence, "Do you know who they are?"
"That bunch of lunatics from the Church of Light Religious Tribunal, right?" Komer also quietly picked up his Magic Wand, while trying to take as many items as he could. Fortunately, it was his habit to keep valuable items in his Cosmic Bag, so there was nothing much to worry about.
Komer’s composure greatly impressed Rebury. It was rare to find someone on the Continent who could remain so at ease in front of the Religious Court, especially knowing they were specifically targeted.
"We stand no chance, not even if Mihailovich, Solonberg, and Vladimir Koff were here. Noyola or Lorenzo—one of them alone is enough to cast all of us to hell," Rebury said with a light sigh. As much as he admired the other’s confidence, he still had to remind Komer about the vast difference in strength between them.
"I understand, but that doesn’t mean we will surrender without a fight. If they want to bend me, they’ll need to bring out something truly substantial," Komer responded lightly, "I am a stubborn idealist, I hope they can understand that."
Before Rebury could reply to Komer’s words, a clear voice pierced through the air: "Viscount Komer? I am Noyola from the Court. I believe you understand our intention. I hope you will cooperate with us for a series of checks and verifications. I can assure you that your person, your life, and your legal property will not be harmed."
"Mr. Noyola, you’ve already broken your promise and damaged my property. My Half-beastman Guards were bought with money and trained at great expense. By killing them you’ve harmed my interests, and I can’t trust your word," Komer replied with a smile, "If you wish to demonstrate your sincerity, perhaps you could allow the others to leave first?"
Stunned by Komer’s sharp retort, a tint of annoyance flashed across Noyola’s plump face before settling back to calm: "Very well, you may have your Half-beast soldiers leave."
After Komer issued the order for the Half-beast soldiers to leave, Damarlinsk Castle quickly fell silent. Komer and Rebury’s joint appearance complicated the expressions of a few from the Court. Clearly, though they were mentally prepared, witnessing Rebury’s presence still provoked complex feelings in Noyola, Lorenzo, and Caru - a once meteoric rise of a mighty figure within the Church of Light now reduced to surviving in the remote lands of Caucasus, how to describe such a sensation?
"Rebury, long time no see?" Noyola’s gaze stayed on Rebury, sadness, anger, desolation, remembrance, regret, and lament all flitting through his eyes in a moment, reflecting in Rebury’s heart, filled with emotion. Former superiors and comrades had now reached a point where they faced each other in battle, were these circumstances decreed by the God of Light or beyond human redemption?
