Chapter 655: Volume Eighteen: Stormy Secrets, Chapter Six: Ice Puppet

Komer and Rebry were indeed observing Caru and Boritz at the time, and it must be said that their performance could only be described as standard—nothing particularly impressive. The Light Law Shield is the basic weapon used by the Church of Light to counter attack magic. Virtually any attack magic would struggle to achieve good results against this Neutral Magic, assuming of course that the defender possesses power no less than the attacker’s.

However, Komer had considerable faith in the mana reserves of the two judges. The Nether Qi not only launched round after round of magic attacks in coordination with the Magic Array but also the chilling power inherent in the Nether Qi itself could cause considerable harm to those under attack, forcing the two judges to divert some of their mana to resist the erosion of the Nether Qi.

Komer and Rebry both harbored the thought of forcing the two judges to show a bit of their true skills, so they simultaneously, without prior agreement, released auxiliary magic to stimulate the Magic Array to initiate on a larger scale. Komer went further, intentionally converting Wind System Magic into Ice Magic, guiding the Magic Array through two small-scale Ice Magic spells toward a transition into a large-scale Ice Magic.

Caru and Boritz, who were in the midst of the Magic Array, immediately sensed the change in the aura surrounding them. The spinning wind blades began to slow down, yet their strength became increasingly tenacious. Each collision with the Magic Shield produced a slight undulation, showing the growing power of the wind blades. However, this was still not enough to intimidate Caru and Boritz. What worried them was the Nether Qi at their feet, which seemed to be erupting more fiercely, and it was clearly influenced by changes in the Magic Array, continuously condensing as if preparing for a large-scale magic, making both Caru and Boritz tense.

The dense chill of the Nether Qi gradually coalesced into a cold fog, continually expanding. The chilly mist, akin to thick clouds, lingered around Caru and Boritz, even reaching a point where they could not see their own hands. Their conversation could only be carried out through the transmission of Air magic.

"Caru, I think we need to decide to take countermeasures. It can’t go on like this; even if the opponent has no malicious intent, they seem to be testing us. If we don’t put forward something impressive, I’m afraid we won’t be able to satisfy them," Boritz’s magically transmitted voice was already thick with vehemence. Being attacked like this without clarity was a provocation to the Church of Light, and he was sure that the mastermind hiding in the shadows must be that small aristocrat lord who appeared polite during the daytime. The anger in his heart made it hard for Boritz to accept it—the audacity of this ignorant fellow, who would take the Church of Light for granted if not taught a lesson.

Caru had also been observing the changes in the situation. The continuous strengthening of the Nether Qi was undoubtedly under control, and the mastermind was none other than the lord of the Castle—in the hands of someone extremely familiar with the Castle, Magic Array, and the characteristics of the Eye of Darkness, capable of manipulating the Nether Qi like an extension of his own body, Caru could not say that the man lacked ability.

As the dense Nether Qi accumulated to form a huge mass of Qi, Caru realized that the opponent might be intent on making a deep impression on the two of them. The power of the wind blades became more and more ferocious, constantly slashing at the Light Law Shield. The heavy mass of Nether Qi swelled, and Caru knew that once the mass condensed to a certain degree, it would definitely burst open. A vast elemental force would release at that moment, and he and Boritz, standing at the very center of the storm, would bear the brunt of the impact and suffer the most damage.

But if they couldn’t overcome this obstacle and demonstrate their strength, they’d hardly fulfill the opponent’s wish. Caru knew the opponent set this trap with the purpose of weighing their abilities. Although he was still unclear about their ultimate goal, establishing the absolute dominance of the Church of Light in their minds was quite necessary.

"Boritz, the opponent might be about to unleash a large-scale Ice Magic. If we endure this, I believe they’ll show themselves," Caru took a deep breath. "It seems that our Light Array will actually come into play."

"Good, let these fellows witness the power of the Court and understand that any conspiracy is of no use in the face of absolute power," Boritz nearly gnashed his teeth while forcing these words through gritted teeth. This nearly insulting provocation was making it difficult for him to suppress the urge to severely chastise the other party. Only by forcing these people out could he properly teach these ignorant bandits a lesson.

Komer watched with some interest the two judges shrouded in the Nether Qi mass. These two guys had been quite composed up to this point, showing no distinct reaction even when noticing the change in the Nether Qi flow. Komer of course knew that his opponents were well aware of what the flow change meant, and their good psychological quality had already proved their strength. Now, he needed to further test to what degree their power truly reached.

When the Nether Qi thickened to a critical point, the anomaly finally revealed its form—a massive Ice Puppet, born from the dense accumulation of ice elemental magic power mingled consciously with Puppet Magic by Komer. This was a risky venture. In the eyes of ordinary people, Puppet Magic often gets confused with Dark Magic. On the Continent, professional puppet mages tend to use Dark Magic Force as the core of their puppets because only dark magic can push the power of Puppet Magic to its limits. Other mages, even if they know a thing or two about Puppet Magic, are quite superficial and amateurish.

Komer knew that to dispel the other party’s suspicion, ordinary methods would not suffice. He thus decided to take a reverse approach, displaying Puppet Magic in a show of light in front of the opponents. With the core of thunder-based magic as the first impression, this reverse psychology would more likely earn their trust. They would think that his daring to use Puppet Magic in front of them was a sign of a clear conscience, thus dissipating much of their doubts—of course, this was provided that the opponents were not too foolish. Komer believed in the intelligence of the two people he faced.

The rampant Ice Element giant, under the control of Puppet Magic, became incredibly ferocious. Its massive, column-like icy arms swept crazily, chasing after Caru and Boritz. The screeching howls, accompanied by the whistling of winds, filled the Magic Array with a dense, cold fog. Like a basin, its huge feet moved clumsily within the Magic Array, and each step seemed to make the ground tremble.

Caru and Boritz had never imagined that the accumulation of Nether Qi could give birth to such a monster. They had not anticipated that the massive Elemental Magic Power of ice could manifest in the form of a puppet. The Ice Puppet’s thick palms, like trees uprooted, whistled as they chased the pair who struggled to walk in the icy wind—the Light Law Shield was no match for the hybrid of Magic and Physical Attack. They could only awkwardly dodge an attack they had never encountered before.

Fortunately, countless pillars within the Magic Array provided them with opportunities to hide. They also noticed a Special Feature: whenever the Ice Puppet’s palm got near a pillar of the array, it would instantly melt away. Although the Ice Element would quickly regather and recover, this allowed them to avoid a direct hit from the icy column. It was this unique characteristic that gave Caru and Boritz a brief respite.

Komer also noticed the Ice Puppet’s flaw—its overly large size meant it could not chase the two flexibly within the Array. After chanting a spell, the massive body of the Ice Puppet instantly collapsed and disintegrated, transforming into three much smaller Ice Puppets. Though still larger than the average human, these three Ice Puppets were much more agile, their power doubling. Under Komer’s control, they quickly coordinated in a tactical maneuver, beginning to surround and cut off Caru and Boritz.

Immediately, Caru and Boritz realized the danger that had befallen them. The three Ice Puppets moved deftly within the Array, their limbs capable of automatically detaching to attack during the chase, and after each assault, they rapidly restored themselves with the Elemental Magic Power of ice.

When a detached piece of ice struck the Light Law Shield, it immediately dispersed into a white fog, the intense chill seeming enough to freeze and petrify anyone instantly. Both Caru and Boritz were aware of the severity of the effects when the ice segements turned into fog. Although this ice chill magic was not on a grand scale, its potency was unparalleled within a small area. Especially after being enhanced by the solidified Nether Qi, it far surpassed the strength of regular ice elemental physical force. It could reduce anything to brittle fragments at extremely low temperatures, shattering a person into countless pieces of flesh at the slightest impact.

With a marvelous gesture, Caru threw a silver object into the air; almost at the same moment, both Caru and Boritz brought their hands together in a devout gesture of blessing and prayer, eyes fixed on the tumbling, spinning silver Item above them. A clear chant spilled from their lips,

"Holy Grail of God, pour forth the infinite power of the God of Light upon the world, let the Holy Favor of God bathe all under the heavens, may God be with all people!" Both Caru and Boritz’s faces simultaneously took on a look of supreme pride and glory as their eyes softly closed.
