Chapter 654: Volume Eighteen: Stormy Secrets, Chapter Five: Magic Array

While Caru and Boritz were lost in wonder at the Angel Square in the center of Moreske Castle, little did they know that their every move had long been under the watchful eyes of Komer and Rebry, who remained hidden in the shadows.

In the dark secret room, several crystal balls came together to form a holographic image that instantly displayed the intricate details of the two dark figures before them. The crisp, panoramic scene appeared in the center of the room as if it were a holographic image, revealing every minute detail, even the wrinkles on Caru’s face were faintly visible.

"Mr. Rebry, I see that you seem to be quite moved. What is it? Has something touched the dust of your memories?" Komer was very sensitive to Rebry’s feelings. The deep and complex expression of nostalgia made Komer realize that this mysterious mage must have some ties to the Judges of the Church Tribunal.

Rebry, not at all evading Komer’s probing question, replied with a light smile, "Lord, you seem quite interested in my reaction. What’s the matter, you still don’t trust me?"

"Haha, Mr. Rebry, what are you talking about? If I didn’t trust you, how could I let you stay in Damarlinsk Castle? For you, Damarlinsk Castle holds no more secrets. We are now on the same side," Komer said with a sly smile, shrugging his shoulders indifferently.

"Hmph, thanks for your trust, Lord," said Rebry thoughtfully, his gaze cast upon the panoramic image in the center of the secret room. "Ten years, and this fellow still looks the same. I really want to see if he has made any progress in these ten years."

"Oh? Mr. Rebry, you know these two Judges?" Komer was taken aback. Although he had long suspected that Rebry was affiliated with the Church of Light, the thought of a Mage of the Church of Light willingly falling into the study of dark spells seemed incredible. But hearing Rebry say this seemed to confirm his own suspicions.

"I know one of them, an old acquaintance from many years ago. It’s better not to mention it, it’s all old news," Rebry’s gaze was filled with an endless sense of touch, as if overflowing with sentiments, "I didn’t expect him to have joined the Tribunal, yet I believe he must be one of the more upstanding Judges in there."

"Upstanding? Mr. Rebry, did I hear you right? There’s such a term as ’upstanding’ in the Tribunal?" Komer asked with a disdainful smile.

"Lord, I hope you don’t talk to them with this attitude; otherwise, it will be difficult for you to give them a reasonable explanation when you’re in front of them," Rebry warned with a hint of meaning in his words. "Although Noyola is a fanatic, he’s not a madman. His thinking is more radical and bold, and sometimes, he plays the political game better than anyone. As for those under him, which one isn’t a formidable character forged through trials? Whether it’s magic, martial arts, or adaptability, the members of the Tribunal can stand on their own with plenty to spare. And this time two are coming, there’s certainly a deeper meaning behind it."

"A deeper meaning? What could be so deep? Are they suspecting my identity, or do they feel that the Dark Forces in this land are getting too active?" Komer asked, tilting his head and giving his eyes a spin.

"If it’s just the latter, then it will be much easier to handle. I’m worried that their concern is due to the performance of the undead in the battle of Bruce, which led them to associate it with your performance, Lord. Coupled with the mysterious Damarlinsk Castle, they might feel that the situation in this region is developing in a direction they don’t want to see, and you might be a significant factor in that," Rebry said with clear insight into the minds of the Church of Light, his analysis close to the mark.

"That’s exactly why I need the cooperation of Sir Rebry. We must make them understand that our Caucasus is not to be underestimated, but we also want them to realize that we are not a sanctuary for the Dark Forces. It’s just that, due to our unique geographical location, many phenomena here are distinct from those in the Northern Region," Komer said thoughtfully, as if speaking to himself, yet also as if explaining his thoughts to Rebry.

"Lord, not all the people from the Tribunal are blindly faithful or foolish; the older one is as slick as an eel, not only powerful in magic but also exceptionally accurate in his sense of situations and judgments. Just like you said, as long as they believe that Caucasus is not the paradise for Dark Forces as rumors suggest, and we demonstrate our strength appropriately, I believe at least right now they won’t make a move. Of course, it’s another matter entirely if they’re convinced that we are in cahoots with the Dark Forces," Rebry concluded, demonstrating keen understanding of the mindset of individuals in the Court of Church of Light.

Rebry seemed not to worry about the two religious Judges before him, which gave Komer more confidence.

"Heh heh, Mr. Rebry, great minds think alike. Now, let’s pretend we know nothing and let them try our Ice Wind Array!" Komer’s sinister laughter spread a chilling cold throughout the secret room, giving Rebry goosebumps as well. Working with someone as cunning and diverse in tricks as him really was exhausting, having to consider what his next move might be at all times.

Caru and Boritz swiftly circled the massive Angel Statue and the surrounding large columns twice, finding nothing amiss except for the ever-emerging cold mist. After exchanging a glance with his partner, Boritz was the first to step into the array. The moonlight was cool as water, piercing through the faint mist in the array, casting light on the lifelike Angel Statue. It was as the two stepped into the array that disaster struck.

A piercing, strange howl erupted as if bursting forth from hell below the ground, and the silvery white moonlight suddenly burst into a cold glow, enveloping the entire array. Strong winds erupted from cracks and small holes in the ground, merging together in an instant, transforming into spinning wind blades drawn by the peculiar power emanating from the stone pillars, whirling madly without reason throughout the array.

The ethereal wind blades rapidly materialized in flight, turning into ice shard-like substantial blades that circulated within the entire array, colliding and constantly changing direction. The Light Shield was already raised at the first sign, and the Judges, with their keen senses, detected the strange changes in the array’s magic power before the howling even began, and had maintained high alert. They immediately activated their Light Magic Shields, sealing off every part of their bodies securely.

Sharp wind blades kept revolving furiously around their mana shields, ripping through them. Caru and Boritz continually pushed their own mana to strengthen their shields’ power while also casting supportive Solidification Magic to help their shields last longer. The strong mana released by the huge Magic Array made them both realize that stepping into this unfamiliar array had been too abrupt and reckless, and now it seemed a bit too late for regrets.

The tumultuously errant wind made mobility difficult for both men. Had this been man-made, they could have joined forces using a Light Array to counter it if they found their opponent, but although they suspected foul play, they had not yet detected any enemy presence within their sensing range. Clearly, someone had triggered the array’s power to attack them, and in such a situation, without finding an opponent to retaliate against, and with the array’s fierce attacks almost depleting all their energy to deal with, they simply couldn’t spare more thought for anything else.

The chilling aura in the Magic Array grew stronger, especially after the fierce winds surged, combining the chilling air with the Wind Element, forming an even more perilous cold wind. Each Wind Cold Shadow Blade that grazed over the surfaces of the Light Law Shields shrieked with a grating sound, their expenditure of magic power putting Caru and Boritz in desperate straits with no way out. The gas eruptions from underground were erratic and abnormally cold, with each step needing the support of potent Light Magic to protect themselves.

"Caru, this won’t do, we’ll freeze if we go on like this! Have you noticed? This is an earth eye. If I am not wrong, this should be the fabled Eye of Darkness, from which all the land’s underground yin energy can erupt. If we keep this up, we won’t last much longer."

Beads of cold sweat covered Boritz’s forehead. He hadn’t expected that after years of adventures, he would end up trapped here, deceived by the outward Angel Holy Statue and Magic Array, overlooking the land beneath, where lay the Eye of Darkness. Otherwise, the magic power of an ordinary Magic Array would always be limited and couldn’t last long; both of them could have outlasted it, but now what was under their feet was the Eye of Darkness, its inexhaustible power of chilliness meaning that dragging this out would ultimately turn the two into frozen zombies.

"Boritz, don’t lose your composure. The person who designed this trap might be looking on and laughing right now. We can’t let down the image of our Tribunal. They will show themselves, I believe their goal isn’t to deal with us, at least not in this manner," Caru said, though he was anxious himself, he had a hunch that the silence within the castle at this time was not normal. These people had used such means to deal with them, clearly having calculated that they would come to Damarlinsk Castle for an undercover investigation, intending to teach them a lesson. "This is the Eye of Darkness, but without an external force to trigger it, this Magic Array wouldn’t activate. Right now, they are just waiting for us to beg for mercy."
