Chapter 656: Volume Eighteen: Stormy Secrets, Chapter Seven: Holy Grail Array
The silver object that suddenly soared into the sky burst into a silvery-white glow that illuminated the heavens and earth from more than ten meters above, its light turning the entirety of Damarlinsk Castle into day, causing even Komer and Rebury, who were hidden in a secret chamber and peering secretly, to involuntarily close their eyes to adjust to the dazzling brilliance at that moment.
"The Holy Grail? The Light Array?!" Rebury couldn’t help but sigh in admiration, eyes flashing with complex and unpredictable expressions, "It seems that the Court has indeed been beneficial for him; at the very least, the Light Array has allowed his power to increase by not just a little."
"Mr. Rebury, when you speak of ’him,’ do you mean that older judge? Who is he?" Komer slightly narrowed his pupils to adapt to the glaring silvery-white anomalies, while the Ice Puppets were almost instantly swept away by the onslaught of the silvery-white light. The once awe-inspiring Ice Puppets couldn’t even last a few seconds against the torrent of odd silvery-white light before they went from ice sculptures to ice chips and then to air. The thick Nether Qi within the Magic Array was cleansed completely by the powerful Light Magic as if a flood had passed, the howling Nether Qi and the oncoming Holy Light Power causing strange wailing sounds from their collision, causing even the stone pillars within the Magic Array to seem to wobble.
The immense spatial rift caused the scenes within the Magic Array to appear peculiarly distorted, a sign of a spatial crack created by the forceful impact of magic. At this time, anyone not careful enough to step into it would be teleported to an unknown dimension, and returning to the original world would indeed rely solely on God’s grace.
"Caru was originally a Protector of the Sanctuary at Pericles Cathedral, but due to a difference in understanding of the doctrines with his companions, he voluntarily left the cathedral to wander. Unexpectedly, he was still invited to join the Court. This Light Array is a unique secret technique developed by the fanatic Noyola that utilizes magical instruments to release magic power; while not saying Noyola is anything but a madman, he is also a genius. This kind of array can greatly use the mana of magical instruments, preserving the judge’s mana to the maximum extent, similar to magic tools, but its power exceeds ordinary magic tools by more than several times, of course, it also requires a mage to release some special magic to guide the sacred instruments in unleashing power."
It was evident that Rebury had a profound understanding of the Church of Light’s inner workings, which aroused Komer’s curiosity. Rebury’s special connection with the Church of Light was undeniable, but what kind of glorious history he had there is something Komer had always pondered. What made Rebury go from the light into darkness was something Komer very much wanted to understand and know, but he knew that the timing was not yet ripe, believing that Rebury would eventually reveal his secrets bit by bit.
The ceaseless flow of Nether Qi from the Eye of Darkness was, for the moment, unable to burst forth under the suppression of the mighty Holy Light, and Komer also abandoned the idea of using puppet magic again to gather Ice Puppets. This was probably the best opportunity for a cordial meeting, and to further provoke the other party would truly become a malicious provocation against the authority of the Church of Light.
Caru and Boritz dared not be overly confident any longer and quickly rushed out of the range affected by the Magic Array, using the short burst of Holy Light to sprint to the edge of the castle’s walls; Caru’s eyes, bright as morning stars, kept scouting the second floor inside the castle, certain that the other party was watching from some point, and it seemed that it was time for them to show themselves.
With potent spiritual exploration, they searched all around inside the castle; Komer and Rebury subconsciously closed their eyes to avoid being found. Although it was time to appear, it certainly should not be by being discovered by the other party.
Caru was somewhat disappointed. The opponent was hiding cleverly. Although he could sense their presence, he was unable to pinpoint their exact location, frustrating his intention to teach them a lesson.
"Viscount, isn’t it time for you to show yourself? We don’t like meeting again in this manner, but we have our duties and principles, and we would appreciate your understanding," Caru looked around and released a Magic Transmission. Even with his demeanor ever so grand, he was somewhat displeased with the current situation. Although not exactly shaming, neither himself nor the Court had ever encountered such an awkward circumstance before.
"Caru, why, after so many years, do you still possess your old charm?" Accompanied by hearty laughter, a figure gracefully descended from the second floor of the castle.
The voice sounded somewhat familiar, but Caru didn’t expect to meet an old acquaintance in such a situation. His gaze, filled with doubt, watched the slowly approaching figure, seemingly familiar but also unbelievable. Then, he thought that perhaps only in such a situation it would make sense for the two to meet.
"Rebury, is it really you?" His eyes flashed with an unusual light. The expression on Caru’s face was complex and indescribable. Ten years passed in the blink of an eye, unexpectedly bringing the two together in such a way. It’s said that the world of magic isn’t too far apart, with flying spells and magic transfers, using various methods to keep in touch with close friends. Even differing views shouldn’t stop communication, and even though he had occasionally heard some intermittent news about him, he never knew where he was exactly.
Boritz glanced at his companion in surprise. He hadn’t expected that the figure who had arrived so elegantly was someone his companion knew, and from their conversation, it seemed their relationship was not shallow.
Two equally bright lights met in the air, ten meters apart, colliding and blending together so that for a moment it was difficult to tell them apart. One was gentle with a hint of unruliness and insouciance; the other was resolute with a touch of agility and sophistication. The familiar expressions had not changed at all; or perhaps more accurately, while their appearances may have become quite different, the very essence of their beings appeared to have remained as they were ten years ago. Time could change everything, but the pride and loneliness that flowed in the blood were things no one could alter.
"Caru, who would’ve thought we would meet in such a manner? A mix of emotions overwhelms me, haha. So, why have you chosen to enter Damarlinsk Castle this way?" Rebry seemed very relaxed, showing no embarrassment for not having caused a fuss just before.
"Rebury, you should know what I am doing. The Court has the authority to investigate any place we deem suspicious. As for the method, we’ll consider it appropriately. If it offends anyone, then offense must be taken," Caru spoke with an unintentional return to his usual indifferent tone. He had no desire for conflict with the other party. A mere breach in etiquette was something he didn’t mind explaining, but if there was a real conflict, then all niceties would be set aside.
A smile flickered on Rebry’s lips; this guy hadn’t changed one bit, still uncompromising in his faith, apart from having become more mature and shrewd in his methods over the past ten years.
"Hahaha, since when did the Court become interested in Damarlinsk Castle? I wonder if it’s Viscount Komer or Rebury who piques your interest more?" Rebry appeared very at ease.
Caru was taken aback; he did not expect Rebry to reside in Damarlinsk Castle. In his mind, this castle, symbolizing the status of the Caucasus Lord, should have been home to only the lord and his family and servants, and it was inconceivable for anyone else to live in such a mysterious and secret-filled abode. Could he have been mistaken?
"Rebry, are you saying you live in Damarlinsk Castle?" Caru’s words were laced with disbelief.
"Haha, such a large castle, isn’t it too lonely for Rebry to live all by himself?" Rebry shook his head slightly, "The lord sometimes lives here too; we share many common interests. Uh, many research and experiments are more conveniently conducted at night."
In fact, Caru had suspected ever since Rebry appeared that his former colleague had likely attached himself to Viscount Komer. He felt somewhat sorry for Rebry, who had been a renowned figure in the Church of Light even in his previous days, but now they both had no affiliation with Pericles Cathedral. He had ultimately sided with the Court, while Rebry had disappeared without a trace, rumored to have reverted to his wayward ways, appearing and disappearing among the territories of the nobility in the Northern Alliance Countries, his intentions unclear. Now, coming face to face with him in this out-of-the-way Caucasus was completely unexpected.
"Is that so? I wonder if you would allow me and my companion a look at the old friend’s laboratory?" Caru certainly wouldn’t take Rebry’s words at face value. Since they had already come to a head, he might as well uncover everything. If he found nothing, he could at least put it behind him. Chances to visit such a remote place would be rare in the future, hence he saw nothing wrong with a direct confrontation.
"You are most welcome," Rebry said with a beaming face, unaffected.
Caru, of course, realized that since his adversary dared to let him inspect at will, he must have come prepared, but Caru was confident that Rebry, having just arrived in Caucasus and having had only one day to prepare, could not possibly cover everything up to the extent that he would not see through it with his eyes and spiritual sense. That was something he was quite confident in, so when Rebry readily agreed with ease, Caru internally heaved a sigh of relief.
"Rebry, are you sure you are the one in charge here?" Caru stepped forward, casting a glance at the other man.
"Haha, I’m afraid Rebry might be more familiar with the matters inside Damarlinsk Castle than the lord himself. He usually doesn’t meddle in the affairs here, apart from discussing some research and experiments," Rebry said with a slight smile.
