Chapter 653: Volume Eighteen: Stormy Secrets, Chapter Four: Night Exploration

Facing his partner’s skepticism, Caru remained silent for a long while. It should be said that today’s meeting with the other party was all conventional; everything seemed so normal. He and his partner hadn’t obtained much of value from their preliminary investigation in Ugru. The clues provided by the Thunderhorse Knights were not a big deal either. The Great Mysterium Sect would certainly not give up on a region bordering the southern part of the Continent, especially since this land is relatively independent and ethnically diverse. Such fertile soil is suitable for all kinds of faiths to spread their teachings, and the Great Mysterium Sect would be no exception. If the Great Mysterium Sect didn’t come, that would truly be worrisome.

Now, what needed to be understood was whether the Dark Forces, including the Great Mysterium Sect, had gained a firm foothold in this land. The speculation of the Thunderhorse Knights could only serve as a reference. To tell the truth, both Caru and Boritz looked down upon those seemingly powerful yet inflexible-minded Thunderhorse Knights. These fellows, constrained by various conventional laws and restrictions, were too rigid in both thought and approach to deal with such a complex situation.

The Thunderhorse Knights did suspect that there were some questionable points with Viscount and within Damarlinsk Castle, but they couldn’t produce any valuable evidence. Merely speculating without basis was meaningless. The suggestion Boritz made was also a last resort. If the other party were really harboring sinister schemes, they would certainly try to cover them up, but many things couldn’t be hidden if he didn’t want them to be. Perhaps what they wanted to find was hidden in Damarlinsk Castle.

However, their opponent had been confirmed as a Thunder Magic Mage and had already reached the realm of the Archmage. Although the two of them were not afraid, such covert scouting of the Castle would easily provoke public indignation, especially without any evidence. So, Caru had to think three times before acting.

"Boritz, it’s not that we can’t visit Damarlinsk Castle, but we have to make thorough preparations. We both are aware of the opponent’s Mana. Although we are not afraid, since Damarlinsk Castle can be called the Land of God’s Curse, there must be many dangers hidden within, and this fellow has managed to conquer Damarlinsk Castle. There must be some background and means. If Damarlinsk Castle is at his disposal, our covert investigation will certainly be fraught with danger. And if we encounter misfortune using such methods, we may suffer without being able to complain."

His partner’s caution made Boritz recognize the gap between himself and Caru once again. He seemed to have overlooked the dangers of Damarlinsk Castle, and although the guy was a Thunder Magic Mage, he was able to control the castle where everyone except the original builder met with misfortune. What secrets and inside stories lay within, he couldn’t know. But one thing was certain, the opponent would definitely make use of the various dangers lurking in Damarlinsk Castle against the two of them. Perhaps the other party had already prepared everything, just waiting for them to walk into the trap.

"Then, Caru, what do you mean..." Boritz pondered for a moment, hearing that Caru’s intention was not to give up but to make adequate preparations.

"We need to prepare some Prop. On the one hand, we should conceal our identities as much as we can, and on the other hand, if there is any strangeness, we need to be fully prepared for emergencies. If necessary, we can jointly launch the Light Array." Caru’s expression was grave.

"The Light Array?" Boritz gasped, "Caru, aren’t you exaggerating? Could Damarlinsk Castle be so dangerous? I don’t think the opponent has that kind of strength!"

"Caution is the parent of safety! I hope the opponent does not possess such strength, but the fact that the guy harbors the Power of an Archmage makes me feel that Caucasus is filled with hidden dragons and crouching tigers, quite extraordinary. If there are one or two other strongmen of comparable strength in Damarlinsk Castle, coupled with the setup of Damarlinsk Castle, I’m afraid the journey we are about to embark on will be quite bumpy."

The Light Array is a special combined Magic specifically developed by the Court of the Church of Light to protect the safety of Judges. It allows two or three people to focus their magical powers and activate high-level magic through special Props, which a single Mage would be incapable of.

This type of Array Magic is different from Magic Arrays, which demand even higher Mana. The ability to release large high-level Magic spells mainly relies on special Props. These Props are somewhat similar to Magic tools, yet significantly distinct — they require the caster to have considerable magical power to guide and activate them, and their power far exceeds ordinary Magic Scrolls. Following one use, these special Props lose their Magic power. As these Props are made from various Magic Crystals and imbued with spells or elemental power, they are incredibly precious. Therefore, the special Props carried by the members of the Court are not readily used.

"Since you described this visit as so perilous, my interest has only grown. I hope this covert inspection won’t be as bland as our journey here has been; I’m already sick of such a mundane life!" Caru’s caution only spurred Boritz’s pride. Could a Senior Judge of the Church of Light possibly capsize in a barren place like the Caucasus? The thought was an utterly absurd joke.

The dark Damarlinsk Castle loomed like a slumbering giant beast sprawled across the land, two figures flitted through the nearby scrubland like ghosts, almost soundlessly. A five-meter-high fortress wall would pose a significant challenge even for a Martial Dao expert, but it seemed effortless for the shadowy duo. Levitation Technique and Wind Travel Technique were the most basic magics, one a wind-system air magic and the other a bona fide wind magic. Although both were low-level minor magics, when combined, their effect was remarkably effective.

Like bats, they floated into the air without a sound and silently landed atop the city wall. Half-beast soldiers patrolling the battlements widened their eyes vigilantly, searching the darkness, but they were utterly unable to detect such fleeting shadows—unless they were well prepared.

In the center of Damarlinsk Castle, the Magic Square caught the attention of the two shadows crouching in the corner. They carefully observed the Angel Statue in the square’s center, as a strong cold energy continually seeped from the statue’s base, spreading a bone-chilling cold even from several dozen meters away.

"Boritz, do you see? There’s something peculiar about that square; it’s not the cold from a magic array, but from the land itself." Caru’s expression grew darker; there must be something unknown inside Damarlinsk Castle. However, he hadn’t expected to come across such a massive Magic Square right after entering the fortress. The spreading cold energy nearly threatened to turn the entire castle’s heart into an icehouse, no wonder he had found the half-beast sentries inside the city walls wearing thick padded jackets—it had seemed odd, but now it all made sense. This Angel Square was clearly not an ordinary Magic Square; apart from the columns that seemed to be part of a magic array, the pervasive cold energy proved this place was anything but simple. Perhaps that was the very reason Damarlinsk Castle was built here.

"Hmm, that Angel Statue seems to be made from a special crystal stone. Ah, bathed in moonlight, the Angel Holy Statue is truly beautiful, but it seems like the moonlight amplifies the power of this cold energy." Boritz also noticed the problem; almost no one dared to stay in the center of the square, as the natural cold from underground could harm people in ways not easily cured.

"Hmm, the magic array is designed quite ingeniously. Have you noticed? There seems to be a circular shadow beneath the Angel Holy Statue, as if it is recording the trajectory of the statue under sunlight or moonlight. Could there be some secret to this?" Caru grew more intrigued by the complexity of the Lord of Caucasus, as the cold energy would undoubtedly harm frail mortals. The natural cold and heat energies could injure their delicate constitutions, reaching deep into the marrow and internal organs, making them hard to heal. However, the robust constitution of the half-beasts seemed less sensitive to such cold.

"For now, based solely on what we’ve seen, it’s too early to draw conclusions. Though most would keep their distance from such cold, it’s indeed the best place for mages who practice certain special spells to enhance their mana." Boritz spoke with deep significance, his gaze searching Caru’s face for something.

"Oh? Are you suggesting that His Lordship is using the natural cold here to cultivate and boost his magical power? Thunder Magic doesn’t seem related to this natural cold." Caru shook his head. "Or maybe someone else resides here, someone who must be no ordinary individual to receive the Lord’s permission to train here and enhance their power."

"Yes, I concur with that opinion; His Lordship’s mastery of Thunder Magic is already substantial, and this cold doesn’t hold much value for thunder-based mages," Caru agreed, "Now my curiosity is piqued. Who could be dwelling within Damarlinsk Castle, and what is their relationship with Reno?"

"We will find our opportunity. With the moonlight shining like water, it’s a great time for cultivation, and I believe we will soon find our target." Caru was confident. The magic array beneath the Angel Holy Statue seemed to require a special medium to activate, yet it looked like it hadn’t been triggered in a long time. It seemed that the magic array was secondary.
