Chapter 441: Volume Nine: The Phantom of the Old Castle Chapter Five: Reconstruction
In comparison, the weapons and armor of the two Dark Knights paled significantly. The dull, lightless, and colorless longsword in Vladimir Koff’s hands was clearly an ancient relic with some years on it, yet Komer was evidently lacking in this area of knowledge. However, the Dark Knight generously told Komer that this was one of the creations from Ou Yezi, the famed Dwarven forging master from hundreds of years ago. The rarity of this longsword could be seen just from the choice of materials used to forge it.
This outwardly unadorned longsword was entirely made of Dark series magic metal—Ghostly Sand. Ghostly Sand itself wasn’t classified as a magic metal, but it possessed certain properties typical of magic metals and was extremely tough. However, turning the fine grains of Ghostly Sand into a molten state, refining it, and then shaping it into a Hundred-refined longsword required considerable time and effort. It also demanded a profound mastery of the casting temperature; if the smelting was insufficient, the final product would be brittle and eventually become scrap, whereas over-smelting would ensure flexibility but compromise rigidity, thus affecting the sharpness of the longsword. Therefore, on the Blue Continent, only the Dwarven smelting masters had been able to undertake such a task for hundreds of years. Vladimir Koff was unsure of this longsword’s name, as Eu Yezi forged numerous renowned weapons throughout his life. Many legendary pieces have been passed down, yet the true names of many that remain undiscovered are still unknown.
The flexible armor that Solonberg was carefully polishing was also a masterpiece of a Dwarven artisan. In this respect, Komer could discern some clues; this armor was undoubtedly anti-magic armor, which was a favorite among knights for resisting magic attacks. For a long time, knights who pursued the Martial Dao and mages who explored the Magic Heaven had different goals and should not have had any reason for conflict. Living on the Continent, however, neither could extricate themselves from worldly interests. Many times, for their own benefits, knights and mages could stand on the same front; naturally, they could also stand on opposing sides. The duels between knights and mages had always been a focal point of attention, and the question of who was the true ruler of the Continent seemed to have troubled the races since the Continent’s existence, yet there was still no clear conclusion.
Quite simply, when a knight’s level surpassed that of the mage they were facing, the knight could use their powerful Fighting Qi to resist the attacks and then overcome the mage with martial arts. Similarly, if a mage was stronger than a knight, they could cast powerful spells and kill the knight on the spot. It was a paradoxical combination where no strong entity could claim victory over another without first gauging their opponent’s strength. Many of the Continent’s most glorious moments had been the duels between knights and mages. These encounters seemed to have no clear winner, leading to a seemingly endless debate.
In response to the mages who could often strike first and gain the advantage, the Casters went to great lengths to develop anti-magic armor. Of course, this armor could not completely resist all varieties of a mage’s magic attacks, but while having the typical properties of normal armor against physical attacks, the Casters also experimented with incorporating magic metal minerals and magic non-metal minerals into the armor materials. This gave the armor additional properties to counteract specific aspects of magic metals or non-metals. Later on, some mages joined the casting and forging ranks and began to apply magic blessings and Condensation Spells during the manufacturing process, significantly improving the level of anti-magic armor craftsmanship. Producing anti-magic armor demands precision and faces high failure rates due to its complex process and the cost of expensive materials. Thus, the price of such armor is naturally steep, even becoming a high-end luxury item favored by the upper echelons of society. Apart from a few wealthy high-ranking knights, ordinary knights naturally dared not inquire about them.
And the flexible armor that Solonberg was holding was clearly a very valuable piece of anti-magic armor. The smooth helmet appeared to be more suitable for warriors or knights, somewhat redundant for knights valuing appearance and poise. However, this brilliant silver armor was incredibly soft to the touch, delicate, and thin. Even when worn under a knight’s coat, it was imperceptible. Komer could sense the flow of restrained water-based magic; it was evident that this was a piece of anti-magic armor designed against Fire and Thunder Magic, already possessing significant protective ability against Earth Magic. On the right shoulder of the armor was a clear mark of a magic incantation, an indicator of additional magic a mage had applied to this armor. To determine what spells had been cast on it would require experts who specialize in studying these peculiar and arcane incantations.
To Komer, the greatest gain, however, was having the captured Light Mage in his possession. Ever since this woman’s arrival, the uneasy and oppressive feeling in his heart vanished after she was bound. Even Rebry’s voluntary surrender of the Aladin Wand and the shelves filled with precious magic books and ancient tomes of the Continent’s history could not provide the same sense of relief and comfort to Komer.
Given the complex geographical environment within the underground palace of Damarlinsk Castle and the possibility of hidden dangers still unknown, the exploration team universally agreed that it might be best to postpone the next phase of exploration. Especially with the emergence of a large number of Exotic Magical Beast Variants, which served as a warning to everyone. Had it not been for the superb performance of the Light Mage, now captivated, during the encounter with the One-spiked Flying Dragon, it was difficult to say whether the exploration team would have emerged unscathed. Fortunately, the team had already made significant gains, particularly the vast amount of books found in the two bookcases, mostly related to magic arts. Both Komer and the other mages were anxious to return to the surface to slowly digest the wealth of knowledge gained from this adventure.
