Chapter 440: Volume 9: Phantom of the Ancient Castle, Chapter 5: Rebirth Part 3

Komer’s feigned respect did nothing to affect the girl’s emotions; she seemed to have anticipated the young lord sitting before her would be difficult to handle. She had never thought that a few words would be enough to alter his beliefs radically; that would be unrealistic.

"Your baron, being of noble birth from the Kingdom of Nicosia and with your father as the respected Cyprus Finance Officer, it is true that the Kingdom of Nicosia and the Homer region practice freedom of religion. However, with more than a dozen sects in the kingdom and the region, why have you chosen the God of Darkness as your primary deity? I am very curious about the real answer to this question, and I hope you can satisfy my small curiosity," she said.

Without a mask to hide her features, the girl’s haughty and noble air seemed even more apparent. The Dark Binding did not suppress her pride and elegance; it felt more like Komer was the prisoner, and she the judge.

"Ha ha, Mage Lome, I think you might be mistaken. I don’t deny that I practice Dark Magic or that I could be considered a Dark Mage, but Hades, the god of darkness, is not the main god I worship. There might be some misunderstanding on your part regarding this. As for my mage friends, they are here at my invitation to join the adventure at Damarlinsk Castle. I have no right to interfere with their beliefs, and as long as their actions do not violate the laws of Caucasus, I never inquire," he said.

Undisturbed by her confrontational tone, Komer explained with a smile, "You might not believe me, but it indeed is the case. Under the current circumstances, there’s no need for me to lie to you, don’t you think?"

"So, are you implying that you might actually worship our God of Light?" she asked with a slightly mocking tone that sounded less friendly, though her voice was as clear as a oriole’s, softening the heavy hostility, creating a unique charm to Komer’s ears.

"Mage Lome, I am not so convinced about this God of Light either. If I truly had to choose a god to worship, I would be inclined to choose the War God Mars." Komer shrugged his shoulders, revealing a preference for such heart-to-heart conversations, ready to resolve issues in this manner if possible.

"Your baron, are you suggesting that faith can be chosen or changed at will? Your views are somewhat difficult to comprehend!" exclaimed the beautiful girl, her gaze becoming more severe, "As a noble lord of the Kingdom of Nicosia, your way of thinking is truly frightening."

"Frightened? The Church of Light still has things it fears? Hahaha!" Komer’s attitude grew increasingly wild and arrogant, "Miss Lome, may we discuss the purpose of your visit to the Caucasus? I would also like to know what role you play within the Church of Light, and what in the Caucasus garners such great attention from the Church. First came the Thunderhorse Knights, then priests and priests, and now you, the mysterious Grand Mage. Heh heh, does my small patch of land in the Caucasus really appeal so much to your Church of Light?"

Her eyes fixed on Komer’s face for a long time, the beautiful girl’s expression showed a mix of disdain and pity, only after Komer had finished speaking did she calmly and composedly say, "Your baron, with such a good family background and opportunities, why do you seek a path to self-destruction? If you are willing to renounce evil and embrace goodness, our Church of Light is more than willing to accept a lost citizen who has found his way back."

"Renounce evil and embrace goodness? Return to the right path? Well said, Miss Lome. I wonder what the standards for good and evil in your mind are. Is someone who practices Dark Magic inherently wicked and doomed to commit unforgivable crimes? Or is it that anybody who follows the Church of Light can wash away any sin and become a saint? Ridiculous! Laughable!"

It was the second time Komer had heard such words, and he felt all the worse for it. These self-proclaimed representatives of God, bolstered by the power of the Church of Light, were arrogant and overbearing, treating everything else as nothing. No wonder there was no peace anywhere on the Continent with these people in power.

"What do you think you are, gods or the law? Whoever you deem to be evil or an outcast, they become just that? If I declared the followers of the Light to be heretics and evil, could they then be burned at the Burning Stake or hanged from a noose? You certainly wouldn’t agree to that, so why should anyone accept your judgments?"

This time, Komer behaved with an unusual calm, even giving off a sense of refined poise. He had no intention of using this method to persuade his opponent, as he knew the chances of success were close to zero. Komer never harbored such thoughts, but the indignation in his heart made him unable to resist the urge to vent. Even though he knew it wouldn’t have any effect, he still wanted to speak his mind, feeling relieved only after.

Seeing the other’s eyes filled with a look of compassion for all creatures, Komer knew that his words were as futile as playing the lute to a cow. Of course, he had never expected the other party to agree with his views.

"Well, Miss Lome, I think there’s no need to persist in this issue. If you can’t convince me, just as I can’t convince you, let’s save this topic for a later time when we have more to spare. Right now, you need to answer those three questions I asked earlier. Have you thought it through?"

Perhaps sensing that there would be no common ground with Komer, the mysterious girl simply turned her face to one side, her cold and calm demeanor showing that she was done with verbal sparring.

"What’s the matter? It seems like Miss Lome is not so willing to cooperate. Since you consider us evildoers, have you not considered that evildoers have their own evil means? If methods of the Light cannot solve a problem, then we will resolve it with the ways of evil. There are many methods you cannot imagine that can make you spill all of your secrets without reservation. It’s just that such methods are somewhat disgusting and lowly, and I personally do not wish to resort to them, but only if you are willing to cooperate."

Spreading his hands, Komer showed no sign of giving up, tirelessly persuading his counterpart. He reveled in the thrill of toying with his prey, especially when the opponent was a powerful and proud Light Mage. This sensation brought him an indescribable pleasure.

"Your Excellency the Baron, no need for more words. You surely are well aware of the precepts of the Church of Light. Since we dedicate ourselves to the God of Light, we have long been detached from worldly affairs. So, employ whatever means you have. You will see whether the performance of us adherents of the Light will disappoint you," said the girl dispassionately, turning her head to look elsewhere, her serene face seemingly unaware of what was to come.

"Very good, you have spirit. I do not wish to see an adherent of the Light groveling and begging for mercy before me. That would greatly tarnish my once favorable impression of the Church of Light. If Miss Lome proves extraordinary, who knows? I might even change my mind and come to believe in the God of Light," said Komer with a mocking tone, clapping his hands in mock appreciation.

"Your Excellency the Baron, bring forth whatever you have. Stop wasting your breath," the girl retorted scornfully, drawing a deep breath with a cool tone.

"Miss Lome, don’t be in such a hurry. We have all the time in the world. I know you have prepared yourself well in your heart. Perhaps your Church of Light truly has ways to make people sacrifice themselves for righteousness. However, what I want to tell you is, how will you feel one day when you find out that everything you have done is an act of betrayal against the Church of Light? Hahahaha!"

Standing up and laughing uproariously, Komer’s triumphant look sent chills through the composed girl, who couldn’t help but shudder. She didn’t know what methods the other party would use against her. Although she was resolute in her conviction to die for the cause, if what he said came true, she would truly fall into a dark abyss from which she could never be redeemed.

"Alright, Miss Lome, let’s begin. Everything will start anew, and you will feel fortunate to have a brand new life," Komer said excitedly, licking his lips. A rush of unspeakable joy surged in his heart, completing such a feat would no doubt be a great challenge for him.

Although he wasn’t certain of success, even failure would bring no loss to him—it would just mean one more fool in the world. But should he succeed, his skill with Psychic Magic would surely enter a brand new realm.
