Chapter 418: Volume 8 Gathering of the Storms Chapter 9 Puppet Mage_2

Watching the two angry Thunderhorse Knights leave, Komer shook his head and gave a wry smile.

He did not want to oppose the Church of Light, but he could not succumb to their pressure. If he gave in this time, they would only become more demanding next time. In truth, they had not gained anything of value from his territory; they simply wanted to seize the opportunity to wield greater power so that they could more freely inspect and search places they deemed suspicious. Naturally, Komer could not agree to their demands.

However, it was indeed worrying that members of the Great Mysterium Sect had been quite active in the Caucasus area recently. A stitch in time saves nine, and it was essential to nip potential problems in the bud.

As he faced the Slender Mage, Komer carefully raised a shield of light magic while chanting the spell—this was a standard "Holy Starshine" light protective magic spell—flecks of pale blue starlight scattered over the silvery white halo that floated on the surface of his body, twinkling brightly.

From the astonished look in Mihailovich’s eyes, Komer could tell that the mage was puzzled. Using such pure light magic, even though not of particularly high level, was nearly impossible for a mage with dark attributes to perform due to the high degree of purity required of the light magic power—it was no wonder that the Slender Mage showed such a surprised expression when Komer commenced their contest with this move.

Although it was just a friendly bout, Komer knew that mages never went easy in these confrontations. Of course, they would not drive him to his death, but losing miserably was hard to avoid if one was defeated, and Komer did not want to lose too disgracefully in such a damaging contest.

Mihailovich’s face showed a thoughtful expression; it seemed that Lord, just as Rebry said, was indeed a hidden expert. If it were not for Rebry’s warning, Mihailovich would never have believed that his opponent could be a necromancer with considerable dark magic power.

Mihailovich’s fingers swept slowly across his forehead, and the air suddenly chilled as two skeleton warriors abruptly appeared out of nowhere. The apparitions of skeletons, each standing two meters tall with dark gray scythes, had smooth and rounded skulls with deep dark eye sockets that seemed to swallow all light. Their neatly arranged ribs were an artistic shade of ash white, and as they stood before Mihailovich, they seemed so obedient and submissive.

Komer greatly admired the Slender Mage’s ease in summoning two Skeleton Giant Demons. He was uncertain whether the skeleton warriors before Mihailovich were illusions or actual undead soldiers. He had to take a decisive, exploratory attack to determine whether the skeletons in front of Mihailovich belonged to one type of magical being or another.

His magic wand danced gracefully in his hand, and as his chant quickened, a giant sphere of light exploded with immense light energy upon volleying an attack through the air. As the two skeletons had just prepared an offensive, the sphere burst in front of them. The holy light suddenly intensified, almost blinding, and countless light particles whooshed forward to meet the two leaping skeleton warriors.

The giant skeleton to the left instantly turned into a shadowy figure, then slowly faded away, while the one on the right let out a deep roar and ignored the fractured light spots hitting its body. A few wisps of smoke rose from the skeleton, and the bones even creaked, but the skeleton endured. Its giant scythe brought a strong smell of blood as it struck three consecutive blows aimed at Komer’s top, middle, and bottom positions.

Indeed, they were two different things. Under the impact of his "Heaven Light Crossing Demon" spell, the illusionary skeleton could not withstand and vanished into dust—any magical illusion would dissipate when faced with such pervasive holy light. As for the skeleton that had fiercely pounced to attack, it was undoubtedly one of Mihailovich’s necromancy creations.

If the necromancy-crafted skeleton warriors were of a certain level, most mages would prepare some substitutes for them to distract the opponent, share the impact of strikes, and combine with the skeleton entity for a certain-kill effect. However, even the Slender Mage did not expect Komer to strike so fiercely right from the start, eliminating the illusionary skeleton without even giving him a chance. Now, it all depended on the performance of the remaining skeleton warrior.

Dodging nimbly, Komer flicked his fingers and the Sphere of Light Spell successively formed in his hand. "Pop, pop, pop, pop," the balls of light flowed from his palm, rapidly released in quick succession between his fingers, confronting the giant scythe’s countless swipes in the air. The heavy sounds of blasts continued unabated but could not stop the skeleton’s looming figure from advancing.

As Komer’s gaze shifted, he deftly dodged the sweep of the giant scythe and, with a swift motion of his left hand, a large Mud Giant Demon abruptly formed to block the skeleton warrior’s path.

This was also Komer’s way of testing his progress in elemental magic. After all, with the Church of Light’s priests and Thunderhorse Knights constantly aware of his proficiency in magic, Komer had to refine his skills to better disguise the darkness at his core. Apart from purifying himself with light series mana as much as possible, his only other option was to enhance his cultivation of elemental magic to deceive others.
