Chapter 417: Volume 8 Gathering of the Storms Chapter 9 Puppet Master
Coldly observing the knight of Thunderhorse before him, who had a handsome face but was filled with pride in his bones, another knight of Thunderhorse remained silent, sitting in the guest seat absorbed in thought, as if preoccupied with something on his mind. Baron Komer sat in the chair in the conference hall of the Lord’s Mansion, a chilly atmosphere hanging between them.
"I apologize, Knight Jep, I cannot fulfill your request. The evidence you provided is insufficient to prove anything. I have heard of the Great Mysterium Sect, but I am not a religious enthusiast. I never have been. Therefore, I cannot believe your conclusion that the frequent appearances of Great Mysterium Devotees in Caucasus imply that the sect is secretly expanding in my territory. As for the demand that the Lord’s Mansion should dispatch personnel to investigate and issue a notification warning the people to beware of the Great Mysterium Sect’s infiltration, I find that even more difficult to accept. Based on your claim alone, to issue such a notice that might disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of Caucasus is something I cannot do."
"As for your mention of wanting to help the Judicial Officer trace these Great Mysterium Devotees, that does not seem to comply with the Kingdom Law, nor has there ever been such a precedent. I cannot grant authority to anyone other than the Judicial Officer; I am truly sorry. However, I will notify the Reese Judicial Officer of your concerns and ask him and his subordinates to be vigilant about this issue in their daily work. Do you think such a measure would satisfy you?"
Baron Komer tried his best to control his emotions, striving to conduct himself more like a courteous noble, but the arrogant fellow before him was just too odious. If he hadn’t been shielded by the title of Thunderhorse Knight, Komer might have even chosen to challenge him to get rid of this feeling of having swallowed a fly.
"I’m sorry, Lord, but I think you are overlooking the problems that exist in your territory. The Great Mysterium Sect is not as simple as you imagine; their ability to conceal themselves and the extent of their evil are not something that ordinary people can perceive. I find your approach perplexing. Are you really oblivious to all that is happening in your territory?"
Knight Jep found it difficult to suppress his disdain for the baron, whose eyes always seemed to twinkle with mockery. This seemingly refined noble was actually as dismissive of Jep as Jep was of him. He could feel this hostility, which was not evidence of dark mana, but this subconscious aversion proved that he would not have any fondness for the Church of Light.
"Knight Jep, I cannot agree with your view. If you suspect that I’m derelict in my duty as the lord of Caucasus, you’re completely free to file a complaint with the Kingdom Star Chamber Court. However, one thing you should be clear about is that I am the lord of the Caucasus people, not of any particular church or sect!" Seeing that the other party’s words were somewhat discourteous, Komer was also provoked and his tone became more assertive.
"I apologize if my colleague came across as harsh, Sir Baron. Yet, I believe our positions are not in conflict. In fact, our interests should align. The Great Mysterium Sect is indeed a very evil sect with dark intentions, worshipping death and paranoia. If such a sect were to spread throughout your territory, I believe this is something neither we nor you, Sir Baron, would wish to see. Even if it’s a precautionary measure, we think you should take some steps.".
As the conversation grew increasingly tense, the other knight who had remained quiet couldn’t sit idly by any longer, cleared his throat, and interjected.
"Green Knight, your point is well taken, but as you know, the land of Caucasus has just entered a developmental phase. The people here come from all over the Continent, especially many who are immigrants from homes overrun by the Beastmen. They’ve finally found a stable environment where they can live peacefully. Now, to stir up arms over an unsubstantiated claim about the Great Mysterium Sect seems to me, to not fit the reality of Caucasus."
"Moreover, I have already stated that religious matters are not the focus of the Lord’s Mansion. Religious freedom is a principle I established long ago, as long as it does not violate the laws of the kingdom, any religion can spread their teachings in Caucasus, the Church of Light can, and so can other sects. Of course, if the Great Mysterium Sect is prohibited by the laws of the kingdom, they are certainly not included in this. I hope that some people will not use the pretext of punishing evil and promoting good to advance their own religious teachings."
The veiled reproach in Komer’s words caused Green Knight’s expression to darken, while the other knight’s face turned grave.
"Baron Komer, I did not expect your misunderstanding of our Church of Light to be so profound. Since you insist on your opinion, I think my colleague and I have nothing further to say. However, I must remind you, we will report everything we have found to the Holy Church Main Hall. The Kingdom of Nicosia and our church have an agreement that any sect promoting darkness and death is subject to prohibition. We, the Church of Light, have a duty and obligation to carry out this mission. The Religious Court is very interested in such matters, and I hope their arrival will not displease you, Sir Komer."
Green Knight’s words grew increasingly firm, even carrying an overt threat at the end, causing Komer’s heart to tighten.
"Green Knight, I cannot agree with you. Whether I have any misunderstandings about the Church of Light, I believe Priest Beran and Pastor Gustav will provide a satisfactory answer to the Bishop of Tulado, not for you two to decide. As for whom you need to report to, that is not my concern. In a word, do as you please. Whoever wants to come to Caucasus is welcome, provided they do not break the laws of the kingdom and Caucasus. Otherwise, I believe the people of Caucasus would not consent." Komer’s reply was equally measured and impenetrable.
