Chapter 339: Volume 6: Fortified at Every Step, Chapter 4: Slaughter the Demon (2)

Komer’s only sensation was that of shadows flickering past his eyes. Having prepared thoroughly for this battle, he relied on the acceleration magic he had cast on himself. With a slight sway of his body, he dodged an ogre’s grasping hand that whizzed through the air. The huge stench blasted over his head. While marveling at the ogre’s extraordinary leaping ability, Komer dared not slacken his efforts. A small and exquisite magic wand in his hand pointed towards the ogre, which executed a beautiful spin before landing. A red light ball condensed at the tip of the wand, suddenly falling from the end of the staff. Midway to the ground, it burst into a dazzling red glow, so bright that even Komer’s pupils, long accustomed to such brilliance, involuntarily contracted. The red light split into a fan-shaped rainbow that shot straight towards the ogre, poised to pounce. This was one of the few Light Magic spells that Komer could cast—Ice Melt. Although this spell, mastered by mages and paladins of the Church of Light, could not directly damage an opponent, it effectively nullified or reduced defenses immune to magic, making it a powerful weapon against high-level Magical Beasts.

The air was thick with a piercing stench, a reaction to the ogre’s fury. The ogre’s underarm glands, stimulated by their magic nature, released waves of this dizzying scent in all directions. However, Komer and Ilot, having already taken the Clearing and Cooling Powder, were not affected. Komer had prepared extensively for this fight beforehand, ensuring not a single essential item was missed. He believed in the principle of never engaging in battle unprepared, and when one’s own strength was insufficient, the necessity of material preparation was undeniable.

There came a faint rustling of footsteps from behind, while the two ogres in front were fully primed, their dark red eyes glinting with bloodthirst. Their mouths opened and closed incessantly, their long arms slightly outstretched, ready to devour their prey. It was a harbinger of the ogres’ impending outburst. Komer turned slightly, his peripheral vision already catching sight of two more ogres that had stealthily approached from behind to within ten meters. Their tiptoeing manner indicated they intended to launch a surprise attack while Komer and his companion were fully engaged with the two ogres in front.

Finally, the moment Komer had been waiting for arrived. His worry had been that even if they could slay the two ogres in front, the other two might flee and, driven by their strong desire for revenge, wage ceaseless sneak attacks and harassment against them in the coming days. This was a situation Komer did not want to face.

"Attack!" Komer roared, and at his signal, Ilot, who had been ready to strike, suddenly lunged forward. The faint great sword erupted with a powerful gleam at that moment, creating a massive fan-shaped light screen in front of the two ogres leaping forward. Layers of light rippled with a deep blue hue.

Meanwhile, Komer turned sharply, and three broad arcs of fire formed a pagoda-like Flame Tower. Accompanied by the spell he murmured and the swift slide of his index finger, the night sky seemed to darken, leaving only the expanding tower of flames in front of him. Within moments, each fiery arc blazed into a three-foot-high sheet of flames that undulated and rose, quickly engulfing the two ogres.

A piercing, brutish howl spread across the wilderness, sending chills down one’s spine. Komer could not afford to relax. As he wiped off his sweat, he continued to chant spells to strengthen the binding nature of this Mixed Magic. It was a Large-scale Fire Magic layered with Light Series elements, which Komer knew to be a long-lost ancient magic. He wasn’t even clear about the origins of this particular spell. It was the Demon Subjugation, a perfect variant of Mixed Magic, a painstaking creation by the magic genius Chubais centuries ago.

This too was the result of the knowledge and memories Komer had accumulated through nightmarish dreams and his intensive research on those Parchment scrolls. Unfortunately, he could not decipher the strange, ancient text on the scrolls. It only allowed him to derive vague understandings through the old spells and illustrated hand gestures, though at great cost to their power. From expansion to contraction, the towering Flame Tower shifted layer by layer, its heat surging. Komer even felt the Fire elements straining to break free, a clear sign that the ogres were exhausting every bit of Magic power stored in their core crystals to resist the assault. The Magical Beasts’ formidable magic resistance was fully displayed in their moment of impending doom. Yet, this spell, which had taken Komer months to master, was not easily broken. As the Fire elements drifted away, the vast tower of flames, like a giant vortex, drew them back, consuming the surrounding air and causing space within the Flame Tower to collapse.

Komer continued to gesture, channeling magic power to intensify the magic’s erosive nature. A faint trace of black air swirled around the entire Flame Tower, creating a stark contrast between sacred and peculiar. This was a result of Komer’s study of Dark Erosion Magic, which Kennifer III was most adept at. This Dark Erosion Magic could be attached to any spell, and though it did not enhance the primary spell’s effect, its destructive erosion could infiltrate the opponent’s body silently and significantly damage various functions. However, it had its limitations; its effectiveness was greatly reduced against Dark Class creatures and had no effect on Undead Creatures. But at that moment, Komer had no other choice but to employ what was available.
