Chapter 340: Volume 6: Fortified at Every Step, Chapter 4: Slaughter the Demon (2)_2
After doing all this, Komer felt uneasy. Glancing behind him, he saw Ilot had perfectly cast an interference magic—"Phantom Residue"—from his own custom-made Magic Scroll. Ilot had succeeded in creating two illusions of himself. Such a spell was worthless to any warrior or knight with a slight understanding of Elemental Magic, but it was an excellent maneuver against these Magical Beasts. The alternating figures of Ilot effectively stalled the furious ogres. The images, rotating rapidly around the ogres, with his Great Sword flickering in dark light, stabbed into their bodies from time to time. Although the strikes were not lethal, with all of his Inner Qi channeled into the blade, the tip of the Great Sword started showing a faint shadow, enough to cause damage to the ogres’ flesh.
The two figures appeared and disappeared, rising and falling swiftly, dazzling to the eye and making it impossible to discern the real from the illusion, leaving the powerful ogres with no way to utilize their formidable attack power except for roaring in anger and lunging more desperately.
Komer, somewhat relieved, shifted his attention back to the Flame Tower before him, but suddenly, an ominous premonition sent a shiver through his heart. The ceaseless screams and howls from the Flame Tower abruptly stopped. Before he could react, Komer only felt a surge of tremendous magic power fluctuation in the space before him, and suddenly, the entire wall of flames collapsed. A dark figure burst forth from the flames, lunging straight at him.
With no time to react, Komer could only tilt his head subconsciously. Along with a momentary blackout before his eyes, he felt an immense impact in his chest and abdomen and a tearing pain throughout his body accompanied by the howling wind. However, the shadow that had broken through the fire net, without any pause, rolled agilely in midair and lunged straight for Komer, who had been hit several meters away by its ferocious strike. Fortunately, Ilot, shocked and in alarm, had already reacted. With a roar, he abandoned the other two entangled ogres and thrust forward with all his might, forcing the ogre that had broken through the net to curl and roll in midair, reluctantly abandoning its deadly attack aimed at Komer’s life.
The three-headed ogre let out a deep howl from its throat, as if communicating something. Its massive body crouched slightly, its thick, powerful arms waved vigorously in the air, stirring up gusts of wind. This intelligent Magical Beast had already realized that its two human adversaries were close to capture, its gaze filled with rage, hatred, and greed sweeping over them.
Bearing the pain from his broken ribs, Komer, with the support of Ilot, managed to sit up awkwardly. He had never expected that one of them would abandon itself at a critical moment to use the Magic Core Explosion Technique, a special skill of higher-intellect Magical Beasts. By using its internal Magic power to hit and detonate its Magic Core, causing an explosion that creates a large amount of energy, it caused a brief distortion in the small space. The spell that had been tightly locking the creatures had cracked, and with one more powerful attack, the breakthrough was made. The magic Komer had strengthened with his Solidification Technique finally broke. As a result, one ogre burst apart on the spot, while the other broke through the magical bond, delivering an unexpected, fierce strike to a totally unprepared Komer.
Biting his lip to control his emotions, Komer had no time to consider much else at that moment. He grabbed a prop the size of a fingertip from his waist pouch and violently tossed it into the air. A chorus like a sinister chant from hell rolled out of Komer’s throat, "The final resting place of all things, oh, save your faithful devotee. He wishes to awaken the chaos of this world with his lifelong faith. Awaken, Creator!"
The moment the seven skull beads hit the ground, they suddenly made a crisp sound of bone joints creaking. A cloud of black mist later, seven skeletal frames the size of babies had formed on the ground. Not only was Ilot, who was protecting in front of Komer, dumbstruck by the scene, but even the three-headed ogre across from them, poised to pounce, was captivated by this unbelievable sight, watching this wondrous transformation motionlessly. If they were intelligence-lacking beasts of low order, they might have simply charged forward, and Komer and his companion, already defenseless, would have likely met with a grim end. But it was precisely this slight intelligence that doomed their chance of victory.
The seven baby-sized skeletons nimbly folded into one another, and, like performing a magic trick, their bodies doubled in size. With the same motion repeated, the skeletons had grown to the size of normal humans. Clenching his teeth tightly, Komer kept his gaze fixed on the magic tools that had cost him countless efforts. These were his trump card for survival, meant to be used only as a last resort, but now, at the very first encounter with the ogre, he had no choice but to employ them. This was somewhat disheartening for Komer; however, survival was of the utmost importance. No matter how rare or difficult to make a magic tool might be, there would come a time when it needed to be used. If it could save one’s life, it was considered worth it.
The black mist slowly dissipated, and the fully-grown skeleton warriors moved quickly, arranging themselves into a typical triangular attack formation. The skeleton soldier at the center was holding a Crossbow Case, which left Ilot, unable to believe his own eyes, no choice but to rub his eyes fiercely and pinch his thigh to make sure he wasn’t dreaming the whole thing. Fortunately, the pain in his thigh finally brought him back to his senses, making him realize that everything happening before him was indeed a real part of life.
The three-headed ogre finally sensed the malice and murderous intent emanating from this odd group of skeletal frames, and Komer could no longer care about Ilot staring at him as if he had seen a monster. He recited strengthening and solidification spells non-stop, hoping to boost the attack power and defensive abilities of his skeleton warriors, preparing for the fierce battle that was imminent. As such skeletal soldiers perhaps had a considerable advantage against ordinary human mages or knight warriors. With their inherently toxic phosphorus, once combined with flame magic, they could turn into genuine Poison Fire Skeleton Soldiers. These Poison Fire Skeleton Soldiers were especially suited for mass brawls and could inflict tremendous damage; they not only caused harm to humans with every part of their bodies, but the poisonous smoke released from their burning poison could easily kill any non-undead creature, especially humans.
The skeleton spearmen in an attacking stance looked somewhat comical with their thin skeletal arms, but their lunge stance was textbook perfect. The slightly dull Iron Spears they held were raised just above horizontal, and two Skeleton Sword and Shield Soldiers were huddled tightly to the flanks of the spearman. The broad-bladed short sword in their right hands was the best weapon for close-quarters combat. However, the sight of the broad, heavy swords in the hands, composed of five small finger bones and a slightly larger wrist bone, gave a particularly unsettling and discomforting sensation.
The battle erupted anew. When two of the skeleton sword and shield soldiers were shattered to pieces by the enraged ogre, another skeleton soldier finally struck a mortal blow, stabbing its broad sword under the armpit of the arm that was swinging broken bones. Suddenly, ashen blood spurted out like a fountain from the armpit, causing the ogre’s body to instantly shrink. It began quivering violently, and its agonizing death screams filled the wilderness, ringing in Komer’s head and making him dizzy and weak. The powerful sonic assault was like tide smashing against a dyke, trying to collapse Komer’s sanity. Such a sonic attack at the moment of the ogre’s death was especially lethal to a mage like Komer, who focused on mental cultivation. Once a mage’s sanity was broken, they were left as nothing but an idiot or a madman, similar to the outcome of Magic Power Rebound.
