Chapter 785. Weird Things
Chapter 785: 785. Weird Things
Mauve lay in bed with the physician a little too close for comfort, but he was checking her temperature and other things. Mauve wasn’t sure what, but by the look on his face, he wasn’t very pleased.
Jael was in the room, right behind Ferguson, with an even worse look on his face. He couldn’t see the physician’s face, but he had that look even before Ferguson started to check Mauve. As soon as Ferguson had walked into the room stating his intentions, Jael immediately had a displeased look on his face, which Mauve found funny as they had discussed this prior.
After the meal was over, Ferguson had stated his intentions to check her well-being through Mill, and when Mauve heard it, she had agreed. He had made sure to give her some time to rest after the meal before he showed up.
She had hoped Jael would have gone to attend his daily duties by then, but as soon as Mill had relayed the information, he suddenly had nothing on his schedule, and here he was, bearing over the old man. But Ferguson was too engrossed to be bothered by Jael’s presence.
"Is something wrong?" Mauve said when she couldn’t take it anymore.
He kept checking her pulse and temperature over and over again, and each time, his expression only got worse. However, he didn’t say a word, and this bothered Mauve even more.
"What do you mean?" Jael asked in a loud voice.
Ferguson seemed to snap out of it, and he pulled back. "Well," he started. "Her temperature is high, high enough to be a fever, and her pulse is weird. A lot of things seem weird."
"Oh, the temperature is normal," Mauve replied. She wasn’t too sure about the pulse thing; she hadn’t really noticed.
"Yes," Jael said. "It has been this way for a while now."
"What? And you..." Ferguson shook his head as he realized who he was about to yell at.
"I don’t feel strange," Mauve said. "And I am expecting a child who is both vampire and human. I did expect a few changes."
Mauve wanted to try her best to explain the situation. Unfortunately, she wasn’t a doctor, and there wasn’t any way they could confirm her symptoms were normal. The physician was certain to know more. However, she didn’t want a situation where symptoms from the pregnancy were mistaken for an illness.
"This is more than a few changes. I think it’s a bit worrisome for your temperature to be this high. I—I have never seen anything like this. Please, let me make some herbs for you."
"Absolutely not!" Mauve said and covered her lips at her reaction. She hadn’t realized she had blurted that out but she didn’t think she could take more herbs again. "Ferguson, I feel fine, I promise. My temperature has been this high for no less than three months now. At first, we were worried, but I haven’t needed anything for it except to cool down once in a while when I get too hot."
"And your pulse?" he asked.
Mauve hadn’t really noticed anything different about her pulse. She looked at Jael, a little confused. Was there really something to be worried about?
"It changed around the same time your temperature started to increase. Her heartbeat is also faster," Jael said.
Mauve’s mouth fell open. "Faster? Is that good?" she asked. If it was the baby, shouldn’t it be slower? she thought to herself.
"I don’t know," Jael said. "That’s why I kept asking if you were fine, but you insisted you are, and I didn’t want to give any cause to panic. It also wasn’t fast enough to worry."
Mauve nodded. She couldn’t even be angry. She could see in the dark, felt a little stronger, and now her heartbeat was faster. It made sense that Jael didn’t want her to worry.
Ferguson looked at them as though there must be something wrong with both of them. However, he still understood that there were a lot of weird things about the pregnancy.
"I think I am fine," Mauve said to Ferguson.
"I don’t know, but if you say this has been going on for three months now, you would have definitely noticed something was wrong. I will keep an eye on you, but as soon as I notice something, we have to deal with it immediately."
Mauve’s eyes didn’t hide her surprise. She was shocked he would agree so willingly. Ferguson had seemed a little stuck-up, and she was worried he would be a pain, but he was surprisingly professional.
"Thank you so much," Mauve said with a bright smile. "I’m really glad my brother sent you. Now I have nothing to worry about."
Ferguson wanted to say that was the opposite for him, but he knew he dared not. Her organs were acting weird, and he was worried her body might not keep up. What if the baby was... Ferguson didn’t complete the thought. However, he knew he would do the best he could to prepare the Princess for her delivery.
He never really cared much about royal family matters. He was their physician, but he mostly attended to the crown prince. Luckily for him, Malcolm didn’t fall ill easily, and except for regular check-ups, he hardly went to the castle.
He knew Mauve but only by what he had heard from the crown prince. He knew the prince adored his sister, and he had to do a proper job. Ferguson was determined to do that. However, about his other task here, he wasn’t so sure about that. The Primus was too scary to be trusted.
Every time he was in his presence, it felt like there was a hand around his neck, and the more he was aware of it, the tighter the hand got. Vampires could wipe them out on a whim; they wouldn’t be able to put up a fight.
Maybe it was a good idea for them to learn magic. As much as he didn’t agree to helping vampires, he agreed with learning to prepare themselves for the worst. Ferguson didn’t think they would change his mind during his stay here, as he was already certain of his answer.
