Chapter 786. Something Is Wrong

Chapter 786: 786. Something Is Wrong

It had been a few days since Madeline and Ferguson moved into the castle. Things were going smoothly, and Mauve wasn’t particularly worried about them getting along with vampires. There had been no complaints, and even though they didn’t seem to be more comfortable, they weren’t worse off.

Ferguson made sure to check on her daily, sometimes with Madeline present, other times with just Jael. Jael didn’t let her see Ferguson alone, even though he had to deal with several different issues.

Madeline, fortunately, or unfortunately, had her hands full with Lady Marceline, who bombarded her with questions and summoned her to her room at the slightest whim. She was always asking Madeline questions—most of which she had already heard the answers to—and the delight she took in quizzing Madeline was clear for all to see.

Madeline always looked at Mauve with pleading eyes whenever she caught the two together, but Mauve never tried to free her from Lady Marceline’s clutches. Besides, it wasn’t like she could if she tried. Lady Marceline would always do whatever she wanted.

This was the exact situation that was currently happening during the last meal. Madeline and Ferguson had adjusted to the sleeping patterns of vampires to some extent. Ferguson still had a hard time, and Mauve had gotten reports of him taking naps occasionally, but Madeline seemed to be faring fine—aside from the fact that Lady Marceline was constantly breathing down her neck.

"For a human, you’re doing fairly well," Lady Marceline praised in the backhanded manner she usually would.

"Thank y-you," Madeline’s voice was steadier now, but it sounded a bit hoarse, likely from talking so much.

Lady Marceline nodded as though she had just said the best thing ever. "As much as I still worry that you might be lacking, you’re not bad and my grand niece or nephew might just be in good hands."

Mauve tried to keep her gaze straight. As much as she cared about Madeline, she didn’t want to be dragged into the matter—it was nice to have Lady Marceline’s attention on someone else for once. She no longer asked Mauve questions except when they related to how she felt presently. Every other question was directed at Madeline.

Mauve didn’t hate it. She knew the older vampire was only doing this because she genuinely cared and wanted to be as ready as possible when Mauve was ready to birth the child, and she couldn’t be happier.

"You said vampires’ childbirth, as I have explained to you, isn’t all that different from humans, isn’t that right?"

"Yes," Madeline replied for the umpteenth time.

Lady Marceline started rambling on, not caring if the conversation was appropriate for the table or not. Madeline simply nodded and shook her head when required.

"Princess," Madeline mouthed as their eyes met.

Mauve hadn’t realized she had looked in that direction. Her thoughts about the situation seemed to have drawn her attention to them.

"Help," she mouthed.

Mauve’s first thought was to turn away, but she couldn’t ignore the pleading look on Madeline’s face, so she attempted to draw Marceline’s attention away.

"Lady Marceline," she suddenly yelled a little excitedly. "I think the baby just kicked."

Lady Marceline whipped her head towards Mauve immediately, her conversation with Madeline completely forgotten.

"The baby kicked," she repeated and quickly placed her palm over Mauve’s stomach.

"Oh, you just missed it," Mauve said when she placed her palm and nothing happened. "Maybe next—"

Mauve didn’t get to say the rest of her words before she jerked, and Lady Marceline’s eyes turned to saucers. A smile slowly crept onto her face—it was a little stiff, but she was smiling nonetheless.

Mauve could see Madeline mouthing the words thank you. Mauve smiled at her and turned to see Jael shaking his head, but he didn’t interrupt the exchange.

Thankfully, after that, Lady Marceline didn’t bother Madeline anymore, and she was able to enjoy the rest of her meal without interruptions, but Mauve couldn’t help but notice Madeline’s demeanor didn’t get any better. She still looked a little stressed. Mauve wondered about that and was about to inquire if she was fine when Jael drew her attention.

"Is the meal to your liking?" he asked.

Mauve nodded. This question was a constant. If he wasn’t asking this, he was asking if she wanted more food and more times than not, he would inquire about both.

"Of course. If it weren’t, I would tell you," she said, with a slight shake of her head while subtly laughing.

Jael smiled at her, and Mauve resumed eating.

After she was done eating, Jael wasted no time leaving the dining hall and getting her into bed. He pulled her close, cuddling her and her heavy stomach.

Mauve laughed as he rubbed her stomach, leaning against his cold, shirtless body. She scooted a little closer than she needed to, and Jael was about to speak on it when he suddenly froze.

Mauve could tell immediately—his body stiffened, and his hand around her stomach stopped moving. Mauve frowned and tried to face Jael.

"What’s wrong?" she asked, very worried.

"I can’t really make out the words," he answered immediately, "but I think something is wrong, and someone is approaching quickly."

Mauve felt her heart drop to her stomach and moved to a sitting position immediately, ignoring the fact that Jael tried to stop her. With no other option, Jael sat upright with her.

"Do you think it has something to do with either Ferguson or Madeline?" she asked.

"I don’t know," Jael said, his frown deepening. Whatever this was about, he was sure they would have been able to figure it out without coming to bother them. He knew Mauve would be restless until it was resolved.

Mauve looked to the door, and for a second, Jael was worried she might rush out of bed, but thankfully, she just stared unblinkingly at the door as they both waited for the news of what was going on.

Mill only knocked once before she heard the command to walk in. There was an agitated look on her face as she rushed to the bed, and Mauve couldn’t help but feel alarmed.
