Chapter 784. Marceline And Madeline

Chapter 784: 784. Marceline And Madeline

Even though Mauve had wanted to take the guests by herself to the dining hall, somehow, Jael had gotten wind of her plan and was currently standing next to Mauve as she knocked on the door of Madeline’s room.

She almost wished the poor woman wouldn’t respond because she was sure she would get a fright as soon as she did, but there was no convincing Jael. She sighed—this was only making things worse. However, Jael said he wouldn’t let a bunch of strangers cancel their tradition. She tried to explain that it wasn’t a cancellation, it was just one time, but Jael wasn’t having it, and now here they were.

Madeline answered faster than the first time, and Mill didn’t need to knock again. As expected, she reacted as though she had seen a ghost. Her face paled, and her hand clutched the necklace around her neck. Mauve didn’t notice it until she grabbed it.

However, she recovered quickly and curtsied, clearly embarrassed about her reaction. "Princess, The Primus," she bowed.

"Madeline," it was Jael who spoke first, and Mauve worried he might say something bad, but all he did was call her name.

"Are you ready?" Mauve asked, hoping to get her mind off what had just happened. She didn’t blame Madeline for her reaction to Jael—she had had the same reaction too.

"Yes," Madeline replied, nodding a little too hard. She didn’t lift her head and didn’t move.

"Alright, please come with us," Mauve said and started to move Jael away to give the woman some room to breathe.

Next, they stopped at Ferguson’s room. If Madeline had reacted like she had seen a ghost, Ferguson had acted as though he had seen the devil himself. He immediately started sweating, and he bowed so low, Mauve feared the old man might break his back.

Jael didn’t reply to his greetings and just pulled Mauve as they headed for the dining hall. The place was already filled when they entered, and everyone rose to their feet, but when they saw the guests beside them, whispers wasted no time in circulating.

Mauve tried to turn her attention to the guests, but Jael didn’t let her as he led her to her seat. "Don’t worry," he said as she sat down, leaning too close for comfort. "Someone will take care of them. Let me take care of you."

Mauve reluctantly nodded, annoyed at the light blush that appeared on her face. He didn’t need to say that.

The lords dropped to their seats, and Lady Marceline turned to Mauve. "How was your night?" she asked.

"Pretty good," Mauve said with a smile.

"I see you have been busy," Lady Marceline raised her brows.

Mauve knew what she meant immediately. "I have."

"I still think it’s insulting that your brother doesn’t think we can take care of you adequately."

"Lady Marceline," Mauve cried.

"It’s fine. I appreciate all the help we can get," she said and rolled her eyes before turning her gaze to Madeline, who unfortunately had been placed right next to them.

Mauve had never been happier that Alaric stuck to his mate like glue and that Lady Marceline refused to sit with anyone else except her, or else poor Madeline would have gotten an even more severe treatment.

"Madeline, was it?" Marceline asked.

"Yes, Lady?" Madeline asked, clearly startled that someone at the table was speaking directly to her.

Mauve, however, thought the midwife was lucky. In her own case, Lady Marceline had barged into her room, rambling to her mate and completely dismissive of her. The difference between then and now was so vast, Mauve was happy about how far they had come.

Still, regardless of how Lady Marceline was, she was still one of the nicest vampires Mauve had encountered, and she was certain Madeline had nothing to worry about.

"Lady Marceline, The Primus is my nephew," she announced.

Jael’s reaction was still the same as the first time Marceline had called him her nephew in Mauve’s presence, but this time he didn’t correct her.

"Oh," Madeline bent her head even lower. "The Princess has told me so much about you."

"Oh, she did?" Though her face remained stern, it was clear from her voice that she was very pleased.

"Y-yes."

"That’s good then. I do hope we can work together. Whatever needs to be done, tell me immediately."

"Y-yes, Lady Marceline," Madeline said mechanically.

Mauve shook her head, almost feeling bad for Madeline. She was definitely going to have a hard time with Lady Marceline. However, she was hopeful that the two ladies could work it out. They were vital for her baby.

Lady Marceline completely ignored Ferguson, and after she was done speaking with Madeline, she turned her attention to Alaric, whispering something Mauve couldn’t hear.

After Lady Marceline’s conversation with Madeline, almost no other conversation took place. Louis introduced the guests to the Lords at the table, but no one spoke about them or to them.

The meal didn’t feel too awkward, and Mauve’s eyes would occasionally look in their direction, but they seemed to be eating. Mauve wondered if she had brought them here a little too soon, but a month wasn’t a long time. If they didn’t warm up to vampires quickly, Mauve feared they might be in trouble.

Mauve jerked slightly as Jael placed his palm on her hand and squeezed. "You should eat," he said sternly. "At this point, I fear you might lose your appetite."

"That’s impossible," Louis chimed in.

Mauve shot him a look, and he sealed his lips immediately but not before smiling. She shook her head and smiled too, turning her attention to her meal.

She was doing the best she could. There was no need to fear the worst when there was still a chance for good things to happen. She would have faith, and as Jael said, even if it didn’t work out, they would figure something out.

As much as she didn’t completely believe this and knew he had only said it to make her feel better, she was going to hold on to it and take things easy. It was best for her and the baby.
