Chapter 783: 783. Inviting The Guests
A soft knock.
When they got no answer, Mill tried again, a little harder this time, and she heard someone yelp before they sped to the door, pulling it open. Madeline stood in front of them, her hair in disarray and sleep marks were all over her face. She was dressed in nightclothes still, and it was clear she was just waking up.
Mauve could barely contain her surprise. It was well past evening. She hadn’t even considered the fact that Madeline might still be asleep, and she felt bad for interrupting the woman’s rest just so she could invite her for the first meal.
"My lady," Madeline curtsied as she caught sight of Mauve. "I apologize for presenting myself in such a state."
"No, I should apologize for waking you up," Mauve replied immediately. "I didn’t expect you to be asleep. That was a miscalculation on my part."
"No, no, no," Madeline replied, shaking her head vigorously. "This is my fault. Even though the bed is so comfortable, I had a very hard time falling asleep but eventually did, and I must have overslept." She kept her head down as she spoke.
"Oh, no. Don’t blame yourself. It’s your first day in a completely new environment and way of living. It will be no surprise if it takes you some time to adjust. Please take as long as you need," Mauve said.
"Thank you, Princess. I am grateful."
Mauve smiled at her. "If you’re not returning to bed, I’d like you to join us for the first meal. It doesn’t sound like you have eaten anything in a while. However, I can ask the servants to bring your meal to your room, but I would absolutely love it if you could join us."
"I-I," Madeline started to say, but she couldn’t seem to get the words out.
Mauve smiled at her. "It would be a pleasure if you joined us, and as the midwife, I would love to introduce you to the Primus’s aunt. She has been my primary caregiver in relation to the pregnancy. She was also here for the birth of her nephew. If you two could exchange information, I’d love that."
Madeline was clearly in a tight spot. She didn’t want anything to do with vampires and intended to avoid them as much as possible. However, she couldn’t decline the princess’s request twice in a row, and what Mauve wanted was in line with her duties here. She had known what she would be getting into when she agreed to come here, but experiencing it was very different. Vampires were scary.
"Okay," Madeline finally said, a dejected look on her face.
"Really?" Mauve clapped. "That’s wonderful to hear. I will come to get you myself."
"No, Princess, there is really no need for that," Madeline cried.
"Nonsense, I don’t mind. Get ready, the servants will get you water and whatever you may need. Oh, before I forget," she said and turned to Mill. "This is Mill. She is more than a personal attendant—she is also my friend. Whatever you want to tell me, you can also tell Mill. Whatever issues you may have, she will make sure to help you."
Mill smiled at her. "It is nice to meet you, Madeline."
"S-same here, Miss Mill," Madeline said with a soft curtsy.
Mill didn’t return it, nor did she correct the way Madeline addressed her. However, her smile was as friendly as could be.
"Also, you can ask me anything about Milady. I will help in any way I can. We all want her to have nothing but a safe delivery, and I am really glad you’re here to help."
Madeline slowly raised her head and smiled. "I am not so sure I can be of much help, but I promise to do my best."
"I’m sure that will be enough," Mill replied.
"We should let Madeline get ready for the first meal. I will see you soon."
"Thank you, Princess," Madeline said but didn’t retreat to her room until Mauve turned her back to her. Only then did she slowly retreat, but not before seeing them go towards Ferguson’s bedroom.
Mill didn’t wait long before the door opened. Compared to Madeline’s appearance, Ferguson was pristine, not a hair out of place. He looked like he was on his way out rather than having been in his room all day.
"Ferguson," Mauve said, delight in her voice. She had expected something similar to Madeline, so she was completely taken aback.
"Princess," Ferguson said curtly before giving a small bow. "To what do I owe the honor?"
Mill scrunched up her nose at his bow. It wasn’t that she disliked him; his attitude just irked her a little. She didn’t recall him acting this way the first time she met with him in his bedroom while the servants were attending to them.
"Well, I am glad you’re not having difficulty adjusting," Mauve said with relief. "I want to invite you for the first meal. Madeline already assured us of her attendance."
Ferguson’s gaze narrowed. "You didn’t have to go out of your way to come tell me, Princess, especially in your state." He glanced at her stomach.
"Oh, no, I’m fine," Mauve said with a sheepish smile as she grabbed her stomach. "It gave me a reason to move around."
"Well then, if the Princess has requested and Madeline will be in attendance, I don’t think I have much grounds to decline."
"You can," Mauve said brightly. "You’ll just join us for another."
Ferguson glanced at Mill. It was fleeting, and she doubted he even had the chance to see her properly. However, it was the implication that pissed her off. Ferguson would be difficult, she could tell. Looks like all he needed was a night to show his true colors.
"There is no need for that. It would be rude to decline."
"Well, I am glad. I will be back to take you and Madeline. This is Mill, by the way—she is my personal attendant. Anything you need to relay to me, you can do that through her. She is here to help however you may need."
"Mill, it is a pleasure." He brought his hand to his chest but didn’t bow.
Mill smiled tightly. "The same."
