The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 773. Receiving End
Chapter 773: 773. Receiving End
"There is really not even a scar," Mill said with a mix of horror and relief.
"I know," Mauve said, squinting as she stared into the mirror, looking from her shoulder to her reflection. Each side told her her eyes were deceiving her. It had only been three nights since the incident, and there was no indication that she had a deep cut. Was this because of the baby?
"Wow! Does the Primus know?" she asked.
Mauve shook her head. "I did mention it was healing really fast, but he hasn’t seen me take the bandage off. Kieran said to keep it on just in case, but for there to be not even a scar, it’s almost like an overnight miracle."
"Did you use magic?" Mill asked, still wearing a shocked expression.
Mauve shook her head, wondering if she should tell Mill. "I think it’s the baby," she said, deciding to tell her.
"What?" Mill asked. "Are you sure?"
Mauve nodded. "I think the baby also made my eyes better in the dark and a few other strange things."
"Is that even possible?" Mill asked.
"That’s the only explanation I can think of."
Mill nodded. "I’m just glad you’re fine."
"I am. No need to worry about me so much," Mauve smiled.
It was almost time for the first meal, and according to Jael, there was a high chance that the meeting would commence immediately after. The lords were tired of waiting. They had been polite because Mauve got attacked, but a few of them had been ambushing Jael, and Jael was tired of them in his house. He wanted them out as soon as possible.
"What’s going on here?" Jael said as he walked through the door. Mauve was still glued to the mirror with her shoulders exposed.
"Jael!" she cried and rushed toward him. "Look at this."
Jael frowned as he stared at her exposed shoulders, then his eyes widened, and he stretched out his hand to touch it. "Is this the shoulder you were cut on?"
Mauve nodded excitedly. "It’s all healed."
"How?!" Jael asked.
"I don’t know, but I think the baby," she pointed to her stomach, "might have something to do with it."
"Is that even possible?" Jael asked.
Mauve laughed. "That is exactly what Mill asked."
"Are you really healed?" Jael asked.
Mauve nodded. "No pain."
"That’s great news," he said, and the corners of his eyes softened. "Are you ready?" he asked, and Mauve nodded.
He stuck out his elbow, and she slipped her hand through it. He led her out of her room and to the dining room. It was filled to the brim, and she could see impatience in the eyes that looked at them as they walked through the doors.
Mauve sat down. She didn’t miss the way the lords looked at her with concern. They had done so for the past few days. She wondered if they were really worried about her or if they feared Jael might cancel everything since she got attacked.
She pushed this thought from her mind as she tried to enjoy her meal. If she thought she was eating more before, she was eating even more now. The baby was relentless, but Mauve didn’t hate any part of it; she loved it.
Before the meal was even over, Lady Francine stood to her feet. "Sire, when do you plan to give us any information?" She sounded more worried than irritated.
Jael slowly raised his head from his plate and picked up the napkin. He used it to wipe the corners of his lips before he spoke. "Lady Francine, you’d at least let me finish my meal before you bring up the topic. I have already decided to discuss the matter in depth tonight. There is no need for such impatience."
Lady Francine glanced at Mauve before she slowly sat back. "I apologize for that outburst, Sire, but these are desperate times, and I hope you’ll understand."
Jael slowly nodded. Another word wasn’t spoken until he was done eating and the servants had cleared the dishes. Only then did Louis stand to his feet to address the crowd.
"I understand the past few weeks, months, years, decades, and centuries have been scary and sad for us. We couldn’t count the number of ours that have fallen under Palers, but today, I stand here to tell you all, that we have good news. An official announcement has not been made before now for several reasons, but you will hear it from the Primus’s lips himself."
He sat back down, and Jael leaned back in his seat. He didn’t stand up. He simply lifted his head and said, "We finally have a way to kill Palers for good!"
The echoes of joyful triumph that echoed through the dining hall caught Mauve off guard, and she jerked in shock. Then she smiled. She couldn’t help it. Everyone looked happy and relieved.
Jael gave them a moment to rejoice about the good news before he spoke about the next set of things they would not agree with. "Unfortunately, the only thing we can use to kill Palers is something vampires cannot use," Jael slowly said, watching the lords’ reactions to this.
"Humans are the only ones that can use magic," Jael said, dropping the bombshell.
Whispers erupted from every corner. A few lords sounded surprised; others didn’t. Jael didn’t interrupt and just let them speak to one another for as long as they needed until someone stood up.
"Are you saying we would need human help in the fight against Palers?" Lord Drusile asked, his disgust clear as day.
"Yes!" Jael replied, meeting eyes with Lord Drusile.
The lord cursed. "Absolutely not! To give humans magic and use their..."
"Do you have a better suggestion, Lord Drusile?" Jael asked with a bored expression. It was a typical reaction from Lord Drusile.
Lord Drusile looked down and sat back on his seat, his lips sealed. More whispers rose, but no one stood up to counter the idea. They all had their fears and worries about getting human help, but the matter right now was whether they were more important than defeating Palers.
At the end of the day, they all wanted to see an end to this terror, and pride, fear, and hatred couldn’t stand in the way. Everyone in the room knew this, and there was no one more aware than the species on the receiving end of Palers’ assaults.
