The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 772. Verdict Deserved
Chapter 772: 772. Verdict Deserved
Jael wanted to punch himself as Mauve’s words ceased. He had put her in danger again, but he had already made a promise to himself that this would be the last time. He had gotten rid of the vermin.
"What about Otis and the Phelans?" she asked. She wanted to know if the trial had carried on, as she had been unconscious after the attack.
"He was banished, and as for Lord Phelan and his son, they are banned from the castle and important meetings until further notice."
Mauve slowly nodded her head. "Okay." She wanted to ask more questions. She was sure the lords didn’t take it lightly that he killed a vampire right in front of all of them—and not just a vampire, but a lord.
"If you want a bigger punishment, I can arrange that."
Mauve shook her head. "No, that’s fine."
Though she was angry about being poisoned, she got out of it fine, and if the Phelans hadn’t spoken up, she would have been kidnapped. Besides, they still had their estate to worry about. She winced as she recalled the contents of the letters. Seraphino didn’t explicitly say it, but it sounded like he was going to use Palers to go through with his plans. He didn’t even care about the vampires that would be attacked in the process. She was glad she never had to deal with him again.
"How’s your shoulder?" he asked.
Mauve chuckled. "I told you, it barely hurts."
Jael moved his palm to her stomach, and Mauve looked down with a smile on her face. He was worried. He saw how much blood she lost and how deep the wound was. For her to say she was fine—Jael ground his jaw. He should have killed the bastard sooner.
"How did the rest of it go? Did you talk about Palers with the lords?"
Jael narrowed his eyes. He could not believe she was asking about something like this while she was in such a state. He looked at her bandaged shoulder. He had given her more scars than he liked.
"Not yet," he said. "But most of them are not leaving, and I suppose they won’t leave until they get some kind of answer."
Mauve slowly nodded. "Do we have any?" she asked, looking up at him.
"You are not—"
"I know, I don’t want to either. All I want to do right now is raise our child."
Jael sighed in relief. "There is really only one way to go about it. We have to rely on humans for help."
Mauve’s eyes widened, and she abruptly sat upright. Jael looked like he was about to have a heart attack.
"You shouldn’t be moving around like that," Jael stated.
"I told you, I’m fine. But don’t change the subject. You’re really going to do that?" Mauve asked.
"Yes," he replied.
"Will the lords agree to it?" she asked.
"We don’t have a choice," he said. "Everyone wants the Paler problem gone forever, even if we have to rely on humans for help."
"Are you sure?" Mauve asked.
"Of course. It would be stupid to think otherwise. More estates have been attacked in the past weeks. The castle has been attacked twice by four of these creatures. If a full-blown war erupts and we are unprepared, vampires would suffer the most losses. I am sure the lords understand." And this was the major reason they had chosen Mauve over Seraphino, but Jael didn’t say this.
According to Louis, the result had been unanimous. Everyone had voted against Seraphino, and he knew the dead lord knew what the outcome would be and had decided to kill Mauve while he could. He couldn’t believe she had survived that. He didn’t even sense anything; he was too engrossed in making sure Seraphino got the verdict he deserved.
When he saw Mauve with blood gushing out of her shoulder, he had lost it. His body moved before he gave the order. He didn’t know where the ax had appeared from, but the instant he held it, he knew he was going to kill Seraphino. He had wanted to several times. Beating the hell out of him had not been enough.
Seraphino’s death didn’t have the satisfaction he wanted because once again, he had let the bastard hurt Mauve. He lifted his hand to touch her cheek, and she held it to her face.
"I’m hungry," she suddenly blurted.
Jael’s face brightened. "I’ll get Mill to get you something to eat."
Mauve smiled and nodded as Jael rushed out of bed to pull on the string. He returned to bed just as someone knocked on the door. Jael told them to come in, and Mill walked in with her head bent.
"Sire," she mumbled. When she lifted her head and saw Mauve was awake, she rushed toward the bed. "My lady!"
Mauve smiled at her. "Mill."
"You’re awake," she said.
Mauve nodded.
"How do you feel? Does your shoulder hurt? Do you need anything? Are you in any pain?"
Mauve’s smile widened. "I am fine, Mill. I just would like something to eat."
"Okay, I will bring your food," she said and rushed away.
Mauve nodded and turned her gaze to Jael. He was watching her a little too closely. "What?" she asked.
"Nothing," he replied and pulled her so she was right next to him, putting an arm around her waist.
"Are you sure?" she asked and put her fingers into his hair.
"Yeah, I am sure." He kissed her cheek. "I love you."
Mauve blushed. "Where did that come from?" she asked.
Jael looked up at her with an annoyed look on his face. "That’s not what you say in return."
Mauve blushed even harder. "I love you too," she said, turning away from him.
"I didn’t hear you," Jael replied.
"Jael!" she cried, just as the door opened and Mill walked into the room with her tray of food.
Mauve could tell at a glance that the food would be a little too much for her to finish, but she couldn’t ask them to take it away, so she accepted it and forced Jael to eat with her. Jael didn’t leave her side the whole time, even after eating.
