The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 774. Pipe Dream
Chapter 774: 774. Pipe Dream
"I can’t believe they agreed," Mauve said to Jael when they got to the confines of his room.
Jael nodded. They had to. He was more surprised it took as long as it did. The meeting had dragged on until after the second meal, and they had ended up eating the last meal before they came to the room, but it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
Decisions were made, rules were decided, but more importantly, they agreed to the plan. A lot of lords were still hesitant about it, but there was no other way to go about it, and sitting still was not how to win the war against Palers when they were wreaking havoc everywhere they went.
"The second part of the plan is to speak to your brother about it," Jael said.
Mauve nodded excitedly. When she thought about it, she didn’t really think it would progress this quickly. However, she didn’t like the doubt she felt, but it was Malcolm. If there was anyone she could convince, she figured it would be her brother.
---
**Approximately three weeks later**
Mauve sat in the drawing room with her brother. The fireplace was lit, as it had gotten colder, but the fire wasn’t for her. The pregnancy made sure she was warm at all times; even the cooler temperature didn’t help.
Prince Malcolm Grey had arrived the night before. Jael had made sure he got to the vampire region safely. He had been very happy when he saw Mauve’s pregnancy. After pleasantries were exchanged, Malcolm was taken to a room where he fell asleep for the rest of the night.
Mauve had left him unbothered, as she wanted him to get adequate rest before she dropped the shocking news. Right now, it was just after the first meal of the day, and the night was just starting. Mauve was sure her brother would be able to at least stay awake until midnight. That should be enough time to discuss this.
She wasn’t alone in the drawing room. Jael sat next to her with her hand in his lap, and Louis sat on a different seat from them, as did Malcolm. Mauve could sense he was worried and a little scared. She couldn’t blame him; this was his first time in the vampire region, and he was surrounded by vampires, completely at their mercy. If they decided to strike, he would die. Malcolm didn’t come alone, but no amount of guards could protect him if he was going to be attacked, and he knew this.
"Thank you so much for coming, Malcolm," Mauve started to say.
"You already thanked me before, Mauve," he said with a small smile.
Mauve nodded, returning his smile. "Still doesn’t mean I can’t say it again." Suddenly, her smile fell, and the air grew tense. "I asked you to come here because I want to discuss something with you," Mauve paused and shook her head, "we want to discuss something very important with you, and we would really appreciate your help."
Malcolm’s eyes narrowed, and he looked from Jael to Louis. They were both familiar, but this was the very first time he would take a close look at the person his sister had married, and he could scarcely believe his father had let her go with such a scary-looking person. Even though Malcolm had this thought, he wasn’t worried. It was pretty clear the vampire adored his sister, and the big smile on Mauve’s face when she glanced at the vampire told him all he needed to know.
What he was worried about was this: vampires didn’t need humans, and from the look of things, this was similar to asking for a favor. Malcolm narrowed his eyes. What could vampires possibly need humans for other than blood? If this was about blood, there would be no need for a private meeting. The Primus would just send the usual letter written in his blood, and they would have no option but to do as he requested.
Malcolm leaned back in his seat and did his very best to be comfortable. "What could you possibly need my help for?" he asked.
Mauve squeezed Jael’s hand. She had already told them to let her deal with this. Of course, she didn’t expect her brother to accept willingly, and she braced herself for the numerous questions he would ask. Also, what could she possibly say to convince him?
"Palers," she simply stated.
Malcolm’s eyes widened ever so slightly, and as if not believing Mauve, he looked around the room for confirmation. Jael nodded, and Louis nodded twice.
"Why? There is no way we can go against Palers. Besides, they never really bother us." And they are the reason vampires haven’t completely annihilated humans, but Malcolm didn’t say this part.
"There is—magic," she blurted.
Malcolm looked at her like she had finally lost it. Maybe marrying a vampire was just too much for her, he thought to himself. "Mauve," he said as softly as he could muster. "What are you talking about?"
"Humans can use magic, and magic can kill Palers. At least fire made from magic can," Mauve paused as she thought about it. Was there some other way to kill Palers with magic other than fire?
Malcolm looked at his sister with pity in his eyes and then looked at the two vampires in the room with them. Why were they humoring her? Magic? Now magic fire? What else would she say? Was it the pregnancy, perhaps? He had never heard of a human getting pregnant with a vampire baby before and was absolutely shocked when Mauve told him she was. That was the major reason he was here, even though he was swamped with duties. With his father gravely ill, a lot of things had been falling out of place.
The last war they had, the only reason they were able to win was because his father had made a deal with a certain vampire. He didn’t like the details of it, but it had worked, and they had won the battle without much loss. However, now that news of the king’s sickness was spreading, he had been hearing some displeasing news.
"You don’t believe me," Mauve said, her eyes filled with disappointment.
"It’s not that I don’t believe you. I know you think what you’re saying is the truth. However..." Malcolm paused.
Mauve glared at him, but she couldn’t blame him. When Louis had told her about magic, she had also had the same reaction. Mauve groaned; she would have to use the same method she did with Jael and Kieran. That usually worked faster. It wasn’t like she didn’t like putting on a show, but it would be nice to have someone believe her the first time she said it.
"Give me something to burn," Mauve stated.
"What?" Malcolm said, looking from one vampire to the other. It was odd they weren’t saying anything. All they did was nod.
"Come on," Mauve insisted.
"Fine," he said and ripped his sleeve. It took a little effort, but soon the whole arm of his shirt came off.
Mauve looked at him in disbelief. "You didn’t have to rip your shirt," she stated.
"You asked for something to burn."
Mauve shook her head. "A tiny piece would have sufficed," she replied but accepted the cloth.
"Now what?" he asked.
"Just watch," Mauve said and gripped it. Her lips started to move, and she watched Malcolm’s expression change to even more concern.
She was more amused than angry, realizing that she was curious about what his reaction would be when he saw she was really speaking the truth. Magic with humans—Mauve was sure it wouldn’t be only vampires that would benefit. Humans would benefit even more greatly.
She knew it was a pipe dream, but what if they found a way to fix the rift between them? What if there was a way to make this work? Humans would help vampires, and vice versa. Mauve concentrated on saying the spell; she was daydreaming a little too far.
