The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 765. A Catastrophe

Chapter 765: 765. A Catastrophe

Jael tried his best to keep his expression neutral as he stared at the lord sitting across from him. He knew why Levaton was here. Levaton was the oldest vampire; he knew more about vampires’ history than anyone. So if there was anyone who would react in such a manner about the recent developments, it would be him.

"To what do I owe the honor?" Jael asked. "I do think we have settled the matters between us."

Levaton shuffled in his seat. "I hear Louis has been teaching the lady magic."

Jael frowned. He didn’t like the way the lord introduced the topic. He could have said something along the lines of the dead Palers, but he chose the less common part of the rumor that was circulating.

"What do you mean, Lord Levaton? I don’t think that’s the case," Jael stated. He had no intention of making it easy for the lord.

"It is. How else would she have been able to kill a Paler?"

"Are you saying you knew beforehand that magic was the answer?" Jael asked with a dark look on his face.

The lord shrank back immediately. "Absolutely not. If I had known, I would have suggested it immediately."

Jael leaned back in his seat. "I don’t understand what the problem is, then. I haven’t made an official announcement, but I suppose there is no harm in knowing right now. Yet, you seem to disapprove."

"We can’t give humans magic," Lord Levaton said in horror.

"Mauve is my mate; she isn’t just any human," he said darkly. Though he did intend to go with Mauve’s plan, there was no need for the lord to know that right now.

"W-we can’t—" Lord Levaton immediately looked uncomfortable.

"Are you saying you’d rather let Palers keep killing vampires than find a permanent solution? I don’t think the lords will agree with you on this one."

"That’s not what I mean. It’s dangerous."

"There isn’t anything without disadvantages, but for now, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages."

"It can cause an uprising from humans. If this goes on, Palers would be the least of our worries. We would have humans at our doors ready to attack us."

"I think you overestimate magic."

"I think you underestimate it, Sire."

Jael closed his eyes. "Palers are our biggest worries. I lost my parents to them; you lost your mate a long time ago. Worrying that humans would use magic against us isn’t enough to keep living like this. It isn’t worth it. Getting rid of Palers has been the very thing I have ever wanted. We have finally found a solution; to not seize it would be cruel to ourselves."

"I understand all this, but all that I ask is that you rethink this. Surely, there would be a proper solution soon, b-but this, this could spell a catastrophe."

"We don’t know that yet, Lord Levaton. No reason to worry about something that hasn’t happened yet. Besides, the idea that we need to worry about humans simply because they have a few spells on their side is preposterous. Don’t underestimate vampires!" Jael’s eyes glowed at the end of the sentence.

"Sire," Lord Levaton tried to press, but Jael cut in.

"Is that all you came for, Lord Levaton?" he asked sarcastically.

"Yes," the lord said, bowing his head.

Jael narrowed his eyes. "It’s a bit dangerous to be traveling about. The castle has been attacked twice in less than five days, and around the same time, Lord Phelan’s estate was also attacked. Palers are acting up; I wouldn’t advise moving about in such a dangerous situation. Get some rest. I’d ask my personal guards to make sure you get home safely."

"I brought my own guards."

"I trust mine more," Jael replied with a sly grin. "You’re very important, Lord Levaton; we can’t afford to take risks."

Lord Levaton was about to reply to this when a knock drew both their attention to the door. Jael already knew who was knocking, and without wasting time, he called for them to come in.

"Sire," Louis said as he opened the door, looking like what the cat dragged in. His clothes were torn, and the most obvious damage was on his chest, where claw marks littered it, the cause of the rip. Dried blood gave the wound an ominous look.

"Lord Louis!" Levaton called out in horror. "Are you okay?"

"Oh, Lord Levaton, I didn’t know you were here," Louis said with a small smile. Following the lord’s gaze, he added, "It’s just a scratch." He turned to Jael. "I brought it."

"Where is Kieran?" Jael asked.

"I don’t know. I came to tell you as soon as I arrived."

"Where is it?" Jael asked.

"Out in the field. You wouldn’t want that in the house, would you? If you do, I can bring it in. Damon is keeping an eye on it. I have told a servant to call Kieran. Whenever you’re ready, my liege." Louis gave a mock bow and slipped out before Jael could say anything in reply.

"What is this ’it’ he speaks of, Sire?" Lord Levaton asked as the door shut.

"A Paler," Jael replied easily and slowly rose from his seat.

Lord Levaton gasped. "A Paler? To capture one, why?"

"Don’t sound so shocked, Lord Levaton. It’s not the first time. How else did you think Kieran was able to come up with the drug that worked so well?"

"What is the Paler for now?"

Jael’s brows knitted. "Another of Kieran’s research," he replied.

"Can I see?"

Jael jerked his head at the lord’s unexpected request. He couldn’t exactly say no, but perhaps this was a good thing. "Sure," he replied. "Right this way. You’d have to go ahead of me; I need to make a quick stop. It’s right behind the castle; you shouldn’t miss it."

The lord slowly nodded and lifted himself from the seat, quickly making his way to the door. Jael walked behind him and watched him go down the stairs before he went to pick up Mauve.

She was already on her feet, walking towards him as he opened the door. "How was the meeting?" she asked faintly.

"I’d say it went well. Louis is back. Do you think you can come with me to the field?"

"Of course," Mauve said and increased her pace. She was still surprised Jael was going along with things so easily, and she couldn’t help but think there was a catch somewhere.

"What did Lord Levaton want?" she asked as she walked in step with him.

"Word has already gone out of the castle. He is simply here to confirm what he heard."

Mauve nodded, but she thought Jael was being a little vague. She doubted Lord Levaton was very joyful at the idea. He was the one lord they tended to be at odds with. Mauve would believe it more if Jael said he was against it, but she remembered the conversation with Lady Marceline where the lords just wanted to see the end of Palers.

She heard footsteps and turned her head to see Kieran coming down the stairs. "Lord Kieran," she called with a bright smile.

"My lady," he bowed a little. "I just received word from a servant that Louis has brought a Paler."

"Indeed," Jael responded.

"That was faster than I thought," Kieran said and rushed towards them.

"Louis can be efficient sometimes," Jael replied, his words dripping with sarcasm. "We have an audience; I hope you don’t mind."

Mauve thought Jael was talking to Kieran, but it wasn’t until the two of them turned to look at her as if waiting for her response that she realized the last part was for her. "Wait, what?"

"Lord Levaton," Jael explained.

"He would be there?" she asked.

Jael nodded.

"It’s fine. I don’t really mind."

"That’s good," Jael said and led her towards the door.

When they got to the field, the lord was standing to the side, watching the unconscious Paler. Damon stood close to him, and they both just stared downward. When he noticed her presence, Lord Levaton lifted his gaze, and it landed on her. She could see clear disapproval in his eyes.

She quickly gave her greetings which he returned before turning to the Paler lying on the ground. "Should I burn it up?" she asked no one in particular.

"Yes, please," Kieran replied.

Mauve stretched out her hand and said the spell that she could now recite at the drop of a hat. Once again, the flames picked up, consuming every bit of the Paler and leaving nothing but ashes.
