The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 764. Too Soon

Chapter 764: 764. Too Soon

The rest of the night was pretty quiet, and even though Jael was clearly opposed to the idea of her facing Palers again, he didn’t do anything to stop it. Mauve wasn’t going to bet that this would continue, but for now, she would enjoy the fact that Jael gave his approval.

Mauve tried to get a read on his expression as they made their way to the dining room for the first meal, but Jael still kept his lips sealed and his expression unreadable. He didn’t seem angry, but it was hard to tell with her mate.

The dining hall was packed. All the injured were completely healed now, and they joined them in the dining hall. Mauve couldn’t help her relief at this. Vampires were really working hard to make sure they didn’t have Paler problems anymore.

No sooner did they sit than Corbin asked, "Sire, when will you inform the rest of the lords, and will your mate join us in the next—"

All the color faded from Corbin’s face at the look that Jael shot him, and he immediately mumbled, "Never mind, I was just wondering about what the current course of action would be."

"As I have told you before," Louis started to say, "it is a little too soon to make conclusions. We need to make further investigations and gather as much evidence as we can before we bring the idea to the lords. Magic is a very delicate subject, especially since vampires can’t use it, but be rest assured that now that we have found the answer, we intend to put it to good use. I only ask that you be patient. Lord Kieran, who is in charge of finding out ways to kill Palers, is here, and further research will be done. When we have a final answer, you all can be certain we will launch a full-fledged war against these vermin that have taken our families from us."

"Yes!" echoed through the table, and smiles appeared on the faces of the lords.

Louis allowed the shouts to fade before he started to speak again. "If you have any questions or doubts, I’d prefer you refer to me. The Primus has his hands full trying to make this possible, and our ladyship is pregnant. Blurting out questions at the dining table is certainly not the way to go about it, Corbin."

Corbin looked down. "I apologize. I was just worried because we haven’t heard any news, and my father’s estate was attacked. He suffered a lot of damage. I was hoping for a solution to prevent that from happening again," Corbin hurriedly tried to explain.

"I haven’t forgotten the attack on your father’s estate, and I have made sure Lord Phelan gets all the help the estate needs."

"T-thank you, Sire," Corbin mumbled.

Jael didn’t respond to this and just turned his attention to his food, but not before glancing at Mauve, who smiled at him. The rest of the meal went without further questions, but Kieran and Louis could be seen occasionally discussing.

After the first meal was over, Louis and Jael’s personal guards headed out of the castle. Their goal was to hunt a Paler and bring it back for Mauve to set ablaze.

"You’ve barely said a word," Mauve said to Jael as they got to the privacy of his quarters.

"I’d say I’ve spoken more than a word," he smirked.

She narrowed her eyes at him. "You know what I mean."

"Yeah, but you have no reason for concern."

"Easy for you to say when your mood affects mine." She glared at him.

"It does?" He asked and closed the gap between them. He bent his head and brushed his nose against hers.

"Of course it does," she stated, the fire in her eyes still burning.

"I am not angry," he said and lightly touched her cheek. "If I was, I would never have agreed to this, so you have no reason to worry. It just displeases me that this has to happen." As he spoke, he slowly moved his head from left to right, rubbing against her nose.

"I will be fine," she said.

"I know, the same way I can’t help how I feel. I’ll protect you no matter what, and I don’t say this lightly."

"I know," Mauve laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I couldn’t be happier." She smiled up at him.

Jael lifted her, putting her across his arms, and Mauve yelped. "Jael—" but the rest of her complaints were sealed by a kiss.

Mauve groaned against his lips and kissed him back, his tongue intertwining with hers. When he finally pulled away, her face was flushed, and she was out of breath, her chest heaving as she tried to catch up on the lost breath.

He grinned and was about to say something when a knock interrupted. Jael’s eyes narrowed, and he looked to the door. Mauve lifted her head from where she lay across his arms as she tried to see the door.

"Who is that?" she asked.

Jael narrowed his eyes. "I will attend to it," he said and slowly let her down. He dropped her on the bed and started to pull away.

Mauve slowly nodded as she watched Jael walk to the door. He got to the door and opened it. A servant, shaking, bowed. "Sire," they said. "Lord Levaton has just arrived, and he—"

"May I have a word, Sire?" Lord Levaton asked, interrupting the servant.

Mauve frowned. She couldn’t see him from where she sat, but the last person she had expected to come to the castle was the lord. What did he want? Mauve adjusted on the bed and leaned forward, but even that didn’t help her vision, and all she got was Jael’s broad shoulders.

"You only just got here, Lord Levaton. Shouldn’t you get some rest first? I didn’t even know you were coming."

"I apologize for showing up unannounced," Lord Levaton said, "but it is of utmost importance that I speak to you, Sire."

She gave up trying to see and leaned back just as Jael turned to look at her. "I won’t take too long," he stated.

She slowly nodded. She didn’t mind if he took too long. She was sure it was important. For Lord Levaton to make the journey here so quickly, it must be quite urgent.
