Chapter 763. Just a Precaution

Chapter 763: 763. Just a Precaution

"Kieran has arrived," Jael said to Mauve as soon as he walked into her room.

"That was fast," she said and walked towards him. "I suppose I should go welcome him."

"Is it not a good time for you?" he asked.

"It is, I was just surprised he got here so fast," she replied. "Wasn’t it just last night you sent him a letter?" Besides, even if it wasn’t, this was Kieran Jael was talking about; she would have made time.

"It was," Jael responded.

"Wow," Mauve said as she gave Jael her hand. "He must have left as soon as he got the letter."

Jael nodded and helped her out of bed. "Yes. I didn’t want to bother you, but he says he needs to speak to you," Jael reluctantly admitted.

Mauve froze, and Jael gripped her to prevent her from falling on her face.

"Don’t just stop mid-way," he scolded.

Mauve ignored his outburst. "Why does he want to see me?"

"You know why," Jael started and slowly led her out of the room.

They walked in silence until they came to the door of his study. Mauve’s hands suddenly felt sweaty, and she wiped her free hand on her dress. Jael pushed the door open without the slightest hint of hesitation.

"My lady," Louis’s voice reached her ears as he bowed, and Mauve stared suspiciously at the duo. Kieran had an unreadable expression as he raised his head to look at her.

Mauve blatantly ignored Louis even though he had been the one to call her and turned her attention to Kieran. She smiled at him and said, "I hope the journey wasn’t too hectic?" she asked.

"Not even the slightest," Kieran said politely.

"That’s good," Mauve returned.

"Congratulations on your pregnancy," Kieran suddenly said.

"Oh," Mauve replied, bringing a finger to her lips. "Thank you," she replied as a bright smile appeared on her lips.

"My pleasure," Kieran said.

Mauve nodded to him, and Jael led her to his seat. He sat down and pulled her into his lap. It was hard to be anything other than embarrassed.

Neither Kieran nor Louis acted as though it was anything strange, and both returned to their seats. Jael gently placed her palm on her growing stomach, and the baby kicked, causing Mauve to gasp while Jael looked down at her stomach.

"Is something wrong?" Louis asked, already getting out of his seat.

"No," Mauve shook her head with a small laugh. "The baby kicked."

"Oh," Louis said and sat back.

"Kicked?" Kieran asked with a puzzled expression.

"Yes," Mauve said with a soft giggle. "It’s completely normal. It happens a couple of times during the day."

"I see," Kieran replied. "Can you be a part of this meeting, or...?"

"What? I am fine," Mauve said and sat upright. "The baby kicking doesn’t affect me in any way. It’s just moving. Don’t worry about it."

Kieran still looked unsure, and he turned to Jael, who nodded while he rubbed her stomach. Satisfied with this, Kieran’s facial expression finally relaxed, and he leaned on his seat.

"I have heard most of what transpired, and I find it unbelievable, but I hear there has been more than one instance, so it is pretty much the truth now," Kieran started to say. "Would it be too much to ask for a demonstration right now?"

Mauve shook her head. "Not at all, but I am a little worried that the fire would spread."

"Don’t worry about that," Louis said and slowly pulled something from under his seat.

"Is that a bowl of water?" Jael and Mauve asked in horror.

"I asked a servant to bring it just in case," Louis replied smugly.

"Have you finally lost it? You’re not going to drench my important papers and documents in water."

"Oh, relax. I’ll just hold it under whatever she lights on fire, and she can drop it into the bowl." Louis grinned at his profound idea.

"At this point, she should light your head on fire; it doesn’t seem to be of much use."

Louis gave Jael an unimpressed look. "You don’t get it. My lady, do you think the water is unnecessary?" he asked Mauve with a sly smile.

"Not at all," she replied.

"Don’t humor him," Jael scolded.

"What would you like me to set on fire?" Mauve asked Kieran.

"I am more interested in seeing you chant the spell than whatever you might burn."

"Oh."

"Here," Jael said, handing her a paper.

Mauve frowned as she tried to look at the contents of it. It looked pretty important. "Isn’t this imp—"

"It’s not," he said with finality.

Louis stood up and picked up the bowl. He placed it on the table.

"What are you doing?" Jael asked.

"Just a precaution," he said and sat back in his seat.

Mauve closed her eyes and held onto the paper as she started the spell. It was a bit hard to keep her eyes open when she knew they were all staring at her. The paper lit up immediately, and she dropped it into the bowl of water.

Kieran leaned forward and didn’t take his eyes off until the fire had completely stopped; then he leaned back on his seat with disbelief on his face. "Wow!" he commented. "And you’re saying this particular fire kills Palers?"

Mauve nodded. "It does."

"It doesn’t smell any different, doesn’t act any different. Water puts it out easily as it would any fire, but it kills Palers."

"It doesn’t stop burning until they are consumed," Louis added.

"I never would have thought the answer would be magic. It certainly explains why nothing works. Were they made from magic?"

"What?" Mauve and Louis simultaneously asked.

"Never mind, it’s just something I wondered. There isn’t much information on why we have Palers or what they are. We just know they attack anything, with vampires topping the list. It would make sense if magic is the only thing that can destroy them if they were made that way."

"I don’t think magic can make anything disruptive like that," Mauve mumbled.

Everyone turned to look at Louis.

"What? I don’t know," he said.

"You’re the magic expert here," Mauve replied.

"I don’t know, but I suppose with the right rituals, but even I don’t have enough information about this, and none of the records say anything about how Palers came about. We’ve just always had them."

"That’s beside the point," Jael said.

"I have a request, Sire. You can cancel if you want, and I hate that I’d have to ask that of your ladyship, but would it be possible for me to see this in person?" Kieran asked.

Jael’s palms closed into fists, and Mauve winced as she braced herself for the outburst that was sure to erupt from Jael, but surprisingly, he didn’t yell. "I don’t like to put Mauve in dangerous situations."

"I understand," Kieran said. "Forgive me for asking."

"What? Kieran has done several dangerous researches on Palers because of you and won’t even let him see this? That’s ridiculous. His drug is already safe enough; you can’t say no."

Jael’s eyes glowed as he looked at Louis. He was about to reply, but Mauve cut him off.

"I will do it."

"No," Jael stated.

"Jael," Mauve called. "Kieran deserves to see it."

Jael swore, "Fine, but the Paler must be unconscious."

"Of course," Louis replied. "I will catch and drug it myself," he said with a little too much glee.
