Chapter 762: 762. Lost in Thought

Mauve woke up to a letter from her brother. Jael handed it to her while saying, "It arrived last night, but because of the Palers’ attack, I couldn’t give it to you before now."

"Malcolm replied?" she asked as she accepted the sealed letter.

"Yes," Jael said, staring at her suspiciously. "Shouldn’t he have?"

"No, he should. Never mind," she said and ripped the seal off, tearing a bit of the sheet.

Dear Mauve,

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I am so happy for you. I can’t wait to be an uncle.

As for your request, I can’t make any time right now. Father has fallen gravely ill and has delegated his duties to me. I have my hands full at the moment.

However, I promise as soon as I can, I will visit. I will also send gifts to my little niece or nephew when the baby arrives. Take care of yourself.

Crown Prince Malcolm Grey.

Mauve lifted her head from the letter to see Jael staring at her with a serious expression. "What does the letter say?" he asked.

"He congratulated me on the pregnancy and said my father is ill. He also said he would send gifts when the baby arrives." As she told Jael, Mauve realized she didn’t care whether or not her father was sick.

"There is no need for him to send anything. I will get you all you need."

"Jael," Mauve called.

"I was teasing."

"Hmm," she replied.

"What?" he asked.

"There is something I want to talk to you about. It is the main reason I wrote the letter. Promise you won’t get angry."

Jael narrowed his eyes. "Depends on what you say," he whispered as he dropped onto the bed.

"Malcolm doesn’t know yet, but if you don’t like the idea, you can stop it, and I will never mention it to him," Mauve mumbled.

"What are you talking about?" Jael asked.

"Well," Mauve said, twisting her fingers. "I know you don’t want me to have anything to do with Palers, and vampires can’t use magic, so I thought it would be a good idea to use some people."

Jael’s eyes widened.

Mauve quickly raised her hand and she immediately started to explain. "That’s why I am going through Malcolm. He is trustworthy, and we have an alliance. I just thought it was something to think about. I am sure my brother would agree. Palers might be a vampire problem, but they affect humans too. Vae’s uncle was killed by a Paler."

Mauve was rambling, but what else would she do when Jael wouldn’t say anything and his expression didn’t give anything away? She couldn’t tell if he was angry or not.

"Did you tell your brother all this?" he asked.

Mauve shook her head. "Of course not. I simply told him I had something important to talk to him about that I needed his presence for."

"Is this why you asked me if I could make sure your brother got here safely?" Jael asked.

"Yes. Are you mad?"

Jael sighed. "I don’t know."

"It’s a good idea, right?"

"I don’t think we can say if it’s good or not."

"Are you against it?" Mauve asked.

"I don’t think so," he whispered.

"Really?" Mauve asked with glee. It would be nice if people could learn magic.

"Still, it’s not something without consequences. However, it’s not a bad plan. Would you teach them magic?"

Mauve shook her head. "Louis will do a better job," she replied.

"I agree. He would have to leave the vampire regions for that."

Mauve couldn’t help the frown that appeared on her face. Jael was more receptive to this than she ever imagined he would be. She thought he wouldn’t even want to listen, but he was asking more questions.

"I don’t think there is any need for that," Mauve replied with a puzzled expression on her face. If she didn’t know any better, she would think Jael was trying to get rid of Louis.

"I will need some time to think about it," he replied without answering her. "When your brother does agree to come here, let me know."

"Of course."

Jael stretched out his hand to her. "You should get ready for the day. I will come to get you when it’s time for the first meal."

Mauve nodded absentmindedly. She was still dazed when she made her way to her room, where Mill was already waiting for her.

"Did something happen?" Mill asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"It’s hard to say," she mumbled as she sat in the tub. "It’s a good thing, I suppose, but I can’t help but think he wouldn’t have accepted it so easily if not for the fact that it has nothing to do with me. It kind of makes me angry, but at the same time, I am a bit relieved."

"Ah, I see," Mill replied.

Mauve laughed. "I know you have no idea what I am talking about, but it’s not important. I’m just a little lost in thought."

"I hope," Mill replied, helping Mauve out of the bathtub. "But if there is anything wrong, please don’t hesitate to tell me."

"I won’t," Mauve grinned at her. "And I wish you would do the same."

Mill looked surprised. "There is nothing wrong."

"If you say so," Mauve grinned at her. "Do you think I should wear the gold necklace?" Mauve changed the question.

"Which one?" Mill asked immediately.

"I’m fine with any, to be honest, as long as it matches my dress," she walked towards her dresser as she spoke.

When Mauve made her way to the dining hall with Jael, she was dressed in more jewelry than she had worn in a while. She couldn’t decide which, and Mill had ended up choosing for her. It felt a little heavy around her neck, and she was almost regretting her decision.

She had asked Jael if she should take it off, but he had said no, saying the color suited her skin. Speaking of her skin, the white patches have been fading recently. They still appeared, but Mauve noticed the edges were starting to return to their original color.

She wondered if the passage of time was the reason or perhaps because she was pregnant. However, whatever the reason was, she was grateful she no longer had the disease. If she could just figure out how she got healed, she could help a lot of...

"What are you thinking about?" Jael asked.

"Oh," she smiled and looked up at him. "Nothing you need to worry about."
