Chapter 759. Absolutely Putrid

Chapter 759: 759. Absolutely Putrid

Jael glanced down at her. "Are you okay?"

"Hmm," Mauve said absentmindedly. "Yeah."

Jael frowned, but he didn’t ask her any more questions, just squeezed her hand a little tighter as he led her closer to the pile.

The moon shone brightly; even if Mauve’s eyesight wasn’t better, she would have been able to see just as clearly. The field wasn’t empty, a few vampires were loitered around the Palers. It was hard to tell exactly what they were doing from the distance, but it looked like they were just staring at the Palers. One of them stretched out his leg to kick it, but when he noticed Jael’s presence, he stopped and took a step back.

"Sire," Danag rushed towards him and bowed. "We did as you requested. I’ll make sure to occasionally use more of the drug as time passes."

"There wouldn’t be any need for that," Jael whispered.

"Why?" Danag asked and looked at Mauve, noticing her for the first time. "My lady." He bowed.

"Danag," Mauve said with a smile. She turned to Damon, who stood behind him, and smiled at him. He bowed with a neutral expression before turning his gaze to Jael.

"Did you find anything that might be useful?" Jael asked.

"Unfortunately, no, Sire," Damon responded.

Mauve wondered what they could have been searching for, but she knew it had something to do with the Palers. She turned her gaze to the Palers again. Lying on the low grass, they looked almost harmless, especially with their faces hidden from view. The steady snoring wasn’t scary, but all knew the sort of havoc Palers would wreak if they woke up from their slumber. She would stop that from happening.

"I see," Jael replied. "That’s enough for today. You may retire. I will take it from here." Jael knew this wouldn’t do much, and regardless of whether he tried to hide it, he would still have questions to answer, but it was better than putting it up in their faces.

"You said we should watch them until almost dawn," Danag replied, looking at Mauve suspiciously.

"There is no need for that," Jael said. "Take the rest of the guards with you."

Danag looked like he wanted to protest, but Damon bowed and started walking away, causing Danag to reluctantly withdraw. He raised his voice as he tried to round up the guards.

"You don’t want them to see?" Mauve asked with a frown. The fire wouldn’t exactly be hidden.

"Not exactly. Don’t worry about it," he replied and started toward the pile.

Mauve counted four Palers; they were laid out in a line. Suddenly, Jael stopped, and Mauve lifted her head to look at him not only did he stop, but he also prevented her from getting closer.

"Jael?" she called softly.

"This close is enough."

"No, it’s not." Mauve was used to setting things she touched on fire. She was lucky enough that the Paler was what started burning when she said the spell without touching anything. However, there was no way she could tell Jael she wanted to touch the Palers, but at least if she moved closer—yet that didn’t look like it would happen.

"It’s magic. I’m sure you don’t need to—"

"Can’t I step closer still? We are more than six feet away."

Jael’s brows drew together. Then his eyes turned to his personal guards, who were trying to clear the vampires out but failing woefully. They all stood rooted to their spots, trying to figure out what their Primus and the human were up to.

"Damon, Danag," he called.

The guards moved quickly and were by his side in about a second. It was always fascinating to Mauve when vampires moved like that.

"Sire," they said with a bow.

"Stand next to the pile, on opposite sides."

Danag stared at Damon oddly, but Damon was already moving, and he did the same, standing at the start and end of the pile. "Is this okay, Sire?"

Jael merely grunted his response before turning to Mauve. He moved only two steps closer and stopped again. Mauve narrowed her eyes, but at this point, she just wanted this to be over with.

"Danag, can you move backward a bit?" she asked. She didn’t want them to be caught in it.

They glanced at Jael, who glared at them. "Do it."

They nodded and moved almost two feet back. Mauve smiled and pulled her hand from Jael. She didn’t need to, but Jael thought she did, so he let her hand go. Mauve used the opportunity to step closer as she started chanting the spell but made sure not to step further than Jael would approve.

She closed her eyes and then decided against it. Her lips didn’t stop moving at her indecision. She could see vampires stepping closer. They didn’t come as close as Damon and Danag, but they were close enough to get a good view.

Mauve was only halfway through the spell when smoke erupted from one of the Palers. Danag gasped and took a step back. Damon didn’t even look fazed. Whispers reached Mauve’s ears, but she didn’t have the time to figure out what they were saying.

Fire blazed at the end of the spell, and she fell back, but Jael caught her. "I told you not to move too close," he said as he pulled her away from the fire.

Mauve knew this particular spell had gotten stronger, but she didn’t expect it to go up like that. "I wasn’t expecting that," she sheepishly replied.

"Clearly," Jael said with an irritated look on his face. "Let’s go in."

The fire was burning the Palers faster than one would think. Jael couldn’t help but think that even if they were awake, they wouldn’t be able to get away in time. The Palers’ stench filled the air, enough to make one sick.

"Wha—" Mauve started to say but buckled over. "It smells absolutely putrid!" Her eyes started to water, and her insides twisted.

"This is why I told you not to stand so close," Jael scolded as he pulled her away.

"I think I’m going to throw up," she said and put her hand over her mouth.

"Don’t just stand there—move!" Jael moved closer to try to lift her, but his eyes widened in horror as Mauve threw up all over him.
