Chapter 760. Ask Louis

Chapter 760: 760. Ask Louis

"I am sorry," Mauve said in a tiny voice as she sat in bed.

"Don’t talk to me," Jael replied as he lay down with his arms under his head. "You couldn’t have aimed elsewhere. Even though I washed off, I can still smell it."

"I didn’t have control of it."

"You knew you were going to throw up. You said it yourself. Besides, it could have been avoided if you did as I said."

"I am sorry," Mauve repeated.

He looked up at her, and she stuck out her lower lip. "I am sorry," she said again.

"I am not angry," he said. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, the smell caught me off guard."

"What did you expect?" he asked.

"The last one didn’t smell this bad."

"It wasn’t the only thing that burned."

It also wasn’t that close. As soon as it started to burn, it moved and quickly set the surroundings on fire. Mauve’s stomach twisted again. It really was that bad, but at least she didn’t have to worry about throwing up again.

"How come you’re so unaffected?" Mauve asked.

He shrugged. "Maybe because I wasn’t standing so close."

"Jael, you were right next to me," she said.

He glanced at her, then looked to the door and sighed. Mauve frowned, looking from him to the door. She was about to ask when she heard a knock.

"Come in," Jael said immediately.

The door opened, and Mauve blinked at the guests. Damon gave a quick bow before he walked forward. Danag walked in too, but he stood behind Damon.

"The fire stopped," Damon said.

"And?" Jael asked.

"The Palers are dead," Danag said, stepping forward. They all turned their attention to him while he looked at Mauve. "Sire, would you like to see?"

"No, get rid of the mess."

"The guards have a few questions. Actually, I have a few questions," Danag started to say.

"I don’t want to hear it. I’ll answer your questions at a later time." Jael had no intention of doing that; he was going to leave this problem for Louis to figure out. It was his idea in the first place. "If there is a new development or anything of importance, let me know."

"As you wish, Sire," Danag said and left the room with Damon.

Jael turned to see Mauve staring at him with a keen look on her face. "What?" he asked.

"Nothing," she replied. She wasn’t worried. Jael couldn’t blatantly lie in their faces anymore. Everyone knew what had happened, and now they could demand answers. It was a good thing, but if that were the case, why did she feel so unsure?

"You should eat something," Jael suddenly said.

"I’m fine," she replied. "I can just wait for the second meal." Eating right now was a bad idea. Who was to say she wouldn’t throw it right up? She could still smell the putrid odor at the tip of her nose. However, she didn’t tell Jael this. He already looked horrified that she had thrown up on him, but he had still carried her into his room and helped her clean up.

When it was time for the second meal, Jael led her to the dining room, and Mauve couldn’t help the gasp that escaped her lips. It was pretty scanty. Only Jael’s personal guards, Lady Marceline, and her mate were at the table—not even Louis.

"It’s empty," Mauve whispered.

As soon as they were seated, Jael turned to the guards. "What’s going on?" he asked.

"We have at least twenty injured and five severely so, but they will recover before the night is over," Danag explained.

"I see," Jael replied, turning his attention to his meal.

"Sire, about that—"

"Is there anything else I need to know?" Jael asked.

Danag shook his head.

"Then save your questions for Louis," he said, and all the guards turned to Mauve.

"What’s going on?" Lady Marceline asked.

"Nothing," Jael replied immediately. "Besides, this is not the sort of conversation you have during mealtime."

This sentence silenced any questions they might have had, and the rest of the second meal passed in silence. After the meal was over, Jael was quick to lead her to the room where she was asked not to leave.

"You’ve exerted yourself. Get some rest. I have some things to take care of outside the castle," Jael informed her.

Mauve slowly nodded. Now that she had eaten, she did feel a little sleepy, but Jael looked at her as though he didn’t believe she would listen.

"I won’t leave," she replied. "I promise."

"I will call for Mill," Jael said.

"No need to bother her. I will just go to sleep." Mauve could only imagine Mill had her hands full making sure everyone was fine. Wasn’t that supposed to be her job? She was the Primus’s mate and in charge of the castle, but here she was about to hide in her room.

She wanted to go around the castle and see if there was any way she could help but suggesting the idea to Jael was completely out of the question.

Jael narrowed his eyes, but Mauve was already pulling away and closing the door. She walked to the bed and carefully sat on it. At least she had made some progress with the Palers; that was enough consolation. She still hadn’t gotten a reply from her brother, but it was a little too soon for that.

Mauve looked to the door as she heard footsteps and then a knock. "Come in," she said. She could tell there was more than one person.

"Lady Marceline!" she cried and stood to her feet.

"No, remain seated," Lady Marceline said as she walked in, dragging Alaric with her.

"Is something the matter?" Mauve asked as she sat back down.

"No, I just came from Louis’s room, and he gave me a summary of what had happened. To think you were the reason. I’m not surprised Louis would do something like teach you magic. He has always been reckless like that."

"You’re not angry?" Mauve asked.

"What’s there to be angry about? If it’s the answer we need, best to take advantage of it."

"Jael doesn’t see it the same way," Mauve replied, turning her head away.

"My nephew has always been dense, but at the same time, I can understand where he is coming from. He’s always used to battling the Lords; this shouldn’t be a big deal."

Mauve shook her head. "That’s not it."
