The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 758. Necessary Risk

Chapter 758: 758. Necessary Risk

Mauve could hear her heartbeat in her throat as she walked out the front door. Louis limped beside her. She wanted to tell him to get some rest, but she didn’t think she dared to do this.

"Should you be moving?" she asked regardless.

"I already took blood. It’s just taking a little time to heal. Don’t worry about it," Louis said.

Mauve nodded slowly and walked out of the doors. The sight in front of her was awful. There was blood all over the stairs. Was that a chunk of flesh? Mauve did her best not to gag, but if she thought the sight was bad, the smell was even worse.

A few vampires littered the front of the castle. They were mostly servants helping the injured. She walked down the stairs, careful not to block the way of those going up.

"Do you know where Jael is?" she asked.

"He should be in the field," Louis replied.

The field was behind the castle. She turned to look at Louis, wondering if he would be able to make it all the way there.

He glared at her. "Don’t look at me like that," he said and led the way. "Stay close. It’s still very dangerous that you’re out here, and I really wish I didn’t have to do this."

"I want to do it."

Louis turned to look at her briefly before continuing, but they didn’t even make it halfway down the side of the castle when a huge figure blocked their path. Louis was tossed aside with a single punch.

"Jael!" Mauve screamed and tried to rush toward the fallen Louis, but Jael grabbed her hand.

"Have you lost your mind?" Jael asked, his eyes glowing, veins bulging out the sides of his neck.

Mauve wasn’t sure if he was referring to her or Louis. She looked down and saw him scramble to his feet. The weapon was broken and couldn’t be used for support anymore. Louis rested his palms on his knees before pushing himself to his full height.

"Maybe," Louis mumbled. "Four Palers attacked us. It would have gone terribly if there were more."

"No, it wouldn’t have. I told you I had everything under—"

"Except the Paler that decided to attack the front doors. What would have happened if I wasn’t there? Would you have noticed? And if you did, would you have been able to reach it in time? You all had your hands tied."

"No reason to bring Mauve into this." He spun her and pulled her to his body, her back to his front and his hand locked her in. She couldn’t move even if she wanted to.

"All the reason to bring her," Louis stated. He stood in a wide stance. A little push and he would fall. The pain in his thigh was getting worse—he needed more blood. However, he could attend to that later.

"I know Mauve’s safety means nothing to you, but don’t think I would go easy on you again! I have been lenient—"

"Jael!" Mauve’s sudden call caught him off guard. "Let me burn the Palers," she simply said. "The danger has passed. I’ll make sure they stay down until sunlight comes."

Jael’s grip tightened around her, just above her stomach. "Kieran’s drug will do the job."

"Why take the risk? Besides, you said yourself that Kieran’s drug can’t be trusted." Mauve wasn’t happy about saying this but right now she was willing to do anything to convince Jael.

Jael’s lips thinned and the glow in his eyes flickered. "Only because I don’t want you taking unnecessary risks like this."

"It’s not unnecessary, it is a necessary risk," Mauve stated. It was annoying that she couldn’t see his face. "I want to help, even if it’s as little as this. I’m not saying I want to join the squad or anything like that, but I don’t see why we shouldn’t take advantage of this."

"She will be safe, Jael. You have no reason to refuse now. All the Palers are down, and there are more than enough vampires to take them out if something were to go—"

"Shut up! Shut up! Another word from your mouth, Louis, and—"

"Jael," Mauve called softly. She gently placed her free hand on the hand that held her. "Let me."

Jael sighed and ran his fingers through his hair until the band came undone. He rested his forehead on Mauve’s shoulder, and she moved her hand from his arm to his head. She lightly caressed him, and he slowly pulled away.

"You should leave," he said without looking at Louis. "I can’t promise I won’t throw you into the fire."

The sentence didn’t even finish before Louis hopped along in the opposite direction. Mauve could not believe he would leave her without hesitation like that.

"Are you hurt anywhere?" she asked when Jael didn’t let her go or lead her toward the field.

"I’m fine," he said and brought his nose to her hair.

"Are you worried?" she asked.

"Yeah, but that’s not just it. I don’t like this at all."

"I know," she said. "But you can’t—"

"You know this would change everything, right?"

"For good," Mauve smiled.

Jael didn’t respond to this. He slowly unlocked her from his grip and held her palm. She stood next to him, facing the same direction. He walked forward and Mauve felt her heart accelerate again. She was really doing this. What if it didn’t work?

However, she was quick to push the doubt from her mind. This was exactly what she wanted, and maybe when this was over, she could discuss the plans with Jael. The conversation with Louis did bring some doubt about the matter for her, but she was sure there was something that could be done.

She couldn’t go to war—that part was pretty much established, especially not now—but someone else could. While she could help in any way she could, there was a way to do even more. The problem was whether it could be done, but she would take this one step at a time.

They were barely around the corner when Mauve caught sight of the Palers lined up on the ground. She couldn’t help the fear she felt. No way would she be able to face these creatures by herself.

Jael glanced down at her. "Are you okay?"
