The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 757. Hands Full
Chapter 757: 757. Hands Full
Louis stood with the sharp point of a spear stuck to the ground. He used the spear to support his weight; he didn’t have the strength to stand on his own. This was a different spear as the Paler had broken the first one he used.
The Paler was finally down, not dead, just unconscious and to say he was exhausted was an understatement. The monster was pretty stubborn, and it was especially strenuous to fight it all on his own. All the guards went down pretty early, leaving only him to protect the entrance with an unfamiliar weapon.
When Jael and some of the guards who were specifically trained to fight vampires finally showed up, it was easy to use Kieran’s drug on it because Louis had worn it down, but that didn’t come without cost. He had been bitten a few times, and right now the bleeding wouldn’t stop, especially the one on his thigh, but the dark clothes he wore did a pretty good job of hiding the blood.
"You could have called for help," Jael stated.
Louis gasped as he held onto the spear for dear life. "You all had your hands full. I didn’t want to intrude." He smiled.
Jael narrowed his eyes, but he didn’t speak. Instead, he walked towards the unconscious Paler. It lay on the ground with its stomach exposed. The ash skin caught the light of the moon; green veins bulged and a nasty smell permeated the air. There wasn’t any indication that the beast was alive except for the light snore.
Jael kicked it. He exerted so much force that the creature leaped a few paces away. Suddenly, Jael turned to Louis, his gaze suspicious. "You should go inside."
"I am fine," Louis said, a little annoyed. He looked like a mess, and Jael didn’t even have a hair out of place. The band securing his hair was still in place, and Louis wondered if he fought.
"Don’t be silly, you’re bleeding. You were bitten, weren’t you?" Jael asked.
Louis shrugged. "Not a big deal," he said, and tried to take a step forward but immediately erased the thought—he wouldn’t make it. He would fall headfirst.
Jael swore under his breath and walked away. When he returned, there was a bag of blood in his hand. He handed it to Louis. "Drink!" he ordered.
Louis knew better than to argue. He accepted it while holding a death grip on the spear. He was surprised the weapon hadn’t broken yet. He ripped his teeth into the bag and gulped. Blood poured down the side of his lips and down his neck.
He tossed the empty bag and wiped his lips. He would need more, but at least this would close his wound. He needed to be able to move around and see how much damage the Palers had caused.
A few vampires were moving the injured into the castle, but the casualties weren’t as many as expected. Louis knew at least four Palers had attacked them. When he said Jael had his hands full, it wasn’t an exaggeration. To think this many Palers would try to attack them, and so soon after the first attack.
"Sire," a voice called. "What should we do with the bodies?"
"Toss—"
"Jael," Louis called.
Jael ignored him. "Toss them in the field. Sunlight will take care of them."
"Jael," Louis called again. This time he forced himself to move forward. The wound wasn’t fully closed, so the sharp pain as he stretched the skin made him stagger a bit.
Jael turned to look at him. "You should go inside." He looked down. "You’re clearly not going to be any help."
"Jael! Let her do it."
"Shut up and go in," Jael said and started to walk away.
Louis swore and headed up the stairs leading to the front doors. He would most likely face consequences for what he was about to do, but enough was enough. He went up the stairs, using the spear as a cane. The front doors had been left open as the injured were carried in.
Louis made his way in. He was headed for Mauve’s room. Even if it killed him, he would make sure she set the Palers ablaze. He was lost in thought when he heard a soft voice and footsteps.
"Louis," Mauve called and rushed down the stairs, her voice filled with fear and worry. "You’re injured."
Louis narrowed his eyes. "What are you doing here?" Not only was she out here, but she was alone.
"I wasn’t going to go out, I promise."
"Where is Mill?" he asked.
"They needed help."
"And she left you," Louis spat.
"I told her to go," she said.
Louis held the bridge of his nose. He didn’t have any energy for this back and forth, and he couldn’t scold her when he was just about to ask her to go outside the castle. At least he didn’t have to climb the stairs.
"What happened?" she asked as she stepped even closer.
"I am sure you can take a guess."
"Is Jael alright?" she asked and looked behind him at the open door.
"I am sure he didn’t even get a scratch."
Mauve sighed in relief. "That’s wonderful to hear. I will help you to your room." Mauve knew Jael would be mad if he saw her here, but she couldn’t just sit in her room when she didn’t know if he was fine or not.
"I am not incapacitated. I can walk." Mauve gave him a look that said she didn’t believe it. "But we are not going up the stairs."
Mauve’s eyes widened a bit. "You don’t mean."
"Jael intends to just leave them out until the sun comes out, but who is to say they won’t wake before then? That’s not a risk worth taking."
There was something Louis didn’t want to think about. Since Kieran made the drug, he didn’t think the number of Palers had reduced. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any way to tell, but they were attacking estates now and in droves. What would happen if the number of Palers attacking increased even more?
"Jael would never agree," Mauve whispered.
"Yes, and he will definitely be even more irritated about the method we are about to take, but we don’t have time." If he wasn’t inside the castle at the time of the attack, he didn’t want to think about what would have happened when all the guards went down. Would the Paler have gone into the castle, or would they have stopped it in time? It was not something he wanted to think about.
