Chapter 756: 756. A Faint Sound

There was a knock on the door, and Mauve slowly lifted her head from the book to look at Mill, who quickly shook her head. Another knock quickly echoed, this time a little more urgent. Mill stood and walked toward the door.

"Who is it?" she asked softly.

"It’s me, Mill. Is Mauve in there?" he asked.

Mill turned to look at Mauve, and Mauve just nodded her head to let Mill know she could let him in. She didn’t make any attempt to get out of bed; instead, she returned her attention to the book.

Mill pulled the door aside and bent her knees as he walked in. "Lord Louis," she mumbled under her breath.

Louis didn’t even look in her direction. He walked to the bed in long strides and stood next to Mauve. He had a brooding expression that left creases between his eyes.

"What are you doing here?" Mauve asked nonchalantly as she flipped a page.

"You know why I am here," he stated. He stared down intensely with folded arms.

"You’re wasting your time," she mumbled. "Jael didn’t even let me speak last night, so if you’re worried I said something I shouldn’t have, don’t worry."

When it was time for the first meal, he had simply taken her to the dining hall and then brought her back to her room after the first meal was over. She could count the words he said to her before he left her in her room with Mill.

"You didn’t tell him?" Louis looked genuinely shocked.

"More like I couldn’t," Mauve said, then slowly lifted her head. "Jael is adamant about pretending it didn’t happen, and unfortunately, we have to—"

Mauve stopped and jerked her head toward the window just as Louis rushed to it. It was a faint sound, and in a normal situation, Mauve wouldn’t have heard it, but now her hearing was a little sensitive. As soon as he opened the curtains, a louder sound reached their ears. Mill moved from the door to the bed.

"Shit!" Louis swore, shut the windows, and pulled the curtains closed.

"What happened?" Mauve asked.

Louis looked at her. "We are under attack." Turning to Mill, he said, "Don’t let her out of this room, no matter what!"

"What?" Mauve yelled and attempted to get out of bed, but Louis was already at the door. He shut the door loudly as he hurried out.

"My lady," Mill called sternly. "Please stay in bed. This is the safest place for you right now."

"I am not trying to leave," Mauve said, still getting out of bed. "I just want to know what’s going on." She dropped her feet to the ground and headed for the window.

"I don’t think that’s a good idea, my lady," Mill said and tried to stop her from pulling the curtains apart. "It’s best to stay away from the windows."

A shriek made Mill jerk. It sounded a little too close. "I only want to take a peek. Besides, I can’t see anything from here."

"Then there’s no point in looking," Mill replied, quite adamant.

Mauve wanted to protest some more but decided against it. The last time she did exactly what she wanted without listening, she ended up face-to-face with a Paler. She would pay gold coins to avoid such a scenario again.

"I suppose you’re right," she said and dropped back on the bed.

Mill let out a sigh of relief. "Yes, just sit here until we hear the word it’s safe to go out," Mill said.

Mauve reluctantly nodded. Right now, she knew she couldn’t offer much help. With the shrieks and cries of pain, she could just imagine how bad it was. She grabbed the sides of her head as she waited.

She knew just how terrible Palers could be. She hoped no one would be critically injured or worse. Their bites were also lethal to vampires if they didn’t get blood. Too bad she didn’t know how to heal just yet, but would that even work on vampires? Mauve covered her face with her hands. All she could do was wait.

Louis headed out of the castle as he left Mauve’s room. Jael must have joined the fight as he was outside when the attack started. There were no guards at the entrance. Louis swore. How could they leave the front unmanned? It wasn’t only careless; it was dangerous.

He had to open the doors himself, and as soon as he did, he knew exactly why there weren’t any guards at the door—they were currently in a heated battle with a Paler right outside. Louis shut the door and leaned against it.

Almost immediately, a vampire came flying, and Louis stretched out his hand to catch him. He was bleeding profusely; the side of his face had been ripped with claws, and blood poured, but as long as it wasn’t a bite, the vampire would recover without blood.

"Lord Louis," the guard cried and immediately lost consciousness.

"Shit!" Louis swore and placed him aside. He had to join them. The Paler was proving stronger than the guards could handle, and from the sounds of it, Jael and the others had their hands busy.

Louis quickly placed the guard on the ground as he wondered if they had any of Kieran’s drug with them. He didn’t. He didn’t even have his weapon. This was going to be a long fight if they didn’t find a way to knock the Paler out.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t rush back inside to get anything—someone might be dead before he returned. Picking up the fallen weapon of the unconscious guard, Louis rushed toward the Paler. Spears weren’t his favorite weapon, but right now, it would have to do.

Louis rushed forward with the sharp point sticking out. He stabbed it right into the neck of the beast, then evaded the hand the Paler threw out to strike him. He pulled on the spear, slicing its neck, but it wasn’t a deep job as no sooner did the spear slip out than it started to heal.

Louis swore and set off again. This time, he jumped and tried to strike from the other side, aiming for the neck again, but the Paler anticipated the attack and struck out. Louis had to lose his weapon to escape getting slashed, which was hard to do midair.

He fell to the ground and rolled off. His weapon was stuck in the Paler’s arm, which it easily broke. It let out another shriek. Drool dropped down the sides of its mouth as it rushed after Louis, who was scrambling to get on his feet.
