Chapter 755. Waiting

Chapter 755: 755. Waiting

Mauve was glad when the last meal eventually ended, as Louis kept eyeballing her through the entirety of the meal. Every time she lifted her head from her food, he was right there, staring. A couple of times, she had feared he might get noticed by Jael, but that didn’t happen.

When they got to his room, Mauve wasted no time in getting ready for bed. She got into bed with Jael next to her, and he helped her tuck in, but Mauve had no intention to sleep, so she started a conversation.

"How was your day?" she said.

Jael raised a brow at her question. "You already asked how my day went."

"Uh-hmm," she agreed, "but you didn’t give me details. You just said it was fine."

Jael narrowed his eyes at her, but he didn’t complain. "Nothing too special. We picked up the training after the fire, and it took up most of my day. They were a bit paranoid, and for good reason, but I’d say we got some work done, and hopefully, things can return to normal soon enough."

Mauve nodded and said, "That’s good."

"I suppose so, but we can’t be too careful," he replied.

"I know, and the worst is we can never predict the Palers’ next course of action." Mauve felt Jael stiffen, but she didn’t stop. She had wanted to slowly bring up the topic, but it didn’t matter the approach she took—if Jael didn’t want to hear, he wouldn’t.

"Unfortunately," he mumbled.

She could tell he wanted her to end the conversation here, but Mauve wasn’t about to give up. She knew her fault in this, and thus she had given Jael some time to think about it, but it felt like he might never bring up the topic again. At first, she had thought about giving him more time, but why waste such an opportunity?

"Have you thought about it?" Mauve knew she had to tread carefully, so she started vaguely, giving Jael the chance to pretend he had no idea what she was talking about—and she knew he would do just that.

"Thought about what?"

It was hard to stop the smile that appeared on her face; however, there was a twinge of sadness in it. This was a matter of utmost importance, and Jael still didn’t want to discuss it.

Mauve sighed. "You know what I am talking about, Jael. The Paler."

"I am not sending you out into the field to fight those monsters," Jael stated.

"That’s not what I am asking for," Mauve said as softly as she could. "I wouldn’t dare put my life"—she paused and slowly rubbed her stomach—"in danger. But what would happen if Palers were to attack again?"

"We will be ready next time," Jael said.

"I don’t mean just here. Palers have attacked more than half the estates at this point. Kieran could be in danger. I’m not saying the Xanthus estate is next, but we are not the only ones in danger. Won’t you at least confirm that I—"

"You said you’d do things my way," Jael interrupted.

Mauve’s lips thinned. "Y-yes, I did, but do you even have any plans to consider—"

"You should get some sleep," Jael said, lightly touching her head. "Let me worry about this."

Mauve’s eyes narrowed. He truly didn’t want to listen to anything else on the matter. Was Jael really going to pretend it didn’t happen? She didn’t even get the chance to tell him about the plans she wanted to make with her brother. Would this count as keeping it from him if he was the one who didn’t want to listen?

She adjusted and rolled on her side, her back to him. She didn’t want to fight, and she wanted both sides to be happy. So for now, she was willing to let the issue go, but if the chance eventually came, Mauve knew she would grab it with both hands.

Jael stretched out his hand to touch Mauve and then pulled it back. It wasn’t that he didn’t consider the facts. He knew her request wasn’t ridiculous, and this was truly the final answer they had all been looking for, but he couldn’t bear it. Just the thought of it made him want to throw his insides out.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t remain silent forever. He would have to make a decision sooner rather than later. He would also have to inform Kieran. He owed him that much. Hopefully, he would be able to come to terms with it as more time passed.

Mauve opened her eyes and knew she was alone. She looked around, and her brows dipped. Was Jael’s room always this big? He usually enveloped the space, so it was easy for her not to notice. Mauve sat upright and rested her hands on both sides of her face. It was going to be a long night.

She got out of bed and headed for her room before calling servants to help her get ready for the day. Surprisingly, Mill was the one who showed up. She walked into the room with a few servants ready with Mauve’s bathwater.

"My lady," she greeted, and Mauve smiled and waved at her.

It wasn’t until it was just the two of them that Mauve asked, "Have you seen Jael?"

Mill frowned lightly as she helped Mauve out of her nightclothes. "No, I haven’t," she replied.

Mauve narrowed her eyes, but she didn’t speak more on the matter. She just mumbled her thanks.

"Would you like me to find him? I am sure a couple of servants would know where the Primus is," Mill offered.

"No need for that," she whispered. She was sure she would see him eventually, most likely before the first meal would commence. Unless something happened, Jael would definitely come to pick her up.

Unfortunately, she knew she wouldn’t be able to bring up the topic again until they had more privacy, which was why he avoided seeing her after she woke up. Mauve’s gaze darkened. She would be lying if she said she wasn’t pissed, but all she could do was wait and hope he would eventually come around.
