Chapter 754. Horde of Humans
Chapter 754: 754. Horde of Humans
It has been two days since Jael found out Mauve used magic to set the Paler ablaze, resulting in its death, and no conversation about it has been brought up since then. Mauve did try, but she only used subtle hints that Jael didn’t buy into.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t push it, as she knew it would be best to give Jael more than enough time to think about it, but Mauve found herself growing impatient, and it was obvious she wasn’t the only one.
Louis would occasionally make eye contact with her at the dining hall, but sadly they couldn’t do more than that. Jael had given Mill strict orders not to let Mauve out of her sight. At least she was no longer confined to her room, but wherever she went, Mill went with her. Mauve understood Jael’s distrust, but it was still annoying.
All they could do now was wait and let Jael decide the flow of things, but with every passing minute, Mauve could feel herself slowly losing her mind. She had to find a way to speak to Louis. Even if they couldn’t convince Jael, at least she could speak to Louis about her other idea. Jael would probably be more receptive to that, but she didn’t want to tell him until he at least agreed to something.
It was a bit infuriating that he didn’t want to confirm anything. He just wanted to pretend it didn’t happen. "Maybe I should send a letter to Kieran?" Mauve suddenly blurted.
"What?" Mill asked.
"Oh, sorry," she laughed awkwardly, adjusting on the bed. "Was a bit lost in thought."
Mauve shook her head. She couldn’t do that. Jael would get mad. She promised she would do things his way. Unfortunately, this was how he decided to do it, and she would have to go with it. But she still needed to at least speak to Louis.
"Mill," Mauve called.
"Yes," Mill replied, a slight smile on her face.
"Could I ask you for a favor?" Mauve knew this was risky, but she would think of any excuse when the time came.
"Of course," Mill stood up from the chair beside Mauve’s bed and walked closer to her. "What would you like?" she asked.
"Would you..." Mauve paused a bit as she studied Mill’s face. "...help me call Louis?"
Mill’s face fell. "I don’t know if I can do that."
"Did Jael say anything about me not receiving visitors?" Mauve asked. She didn’t know if he did; she was hoping he didn’t.
"No," Mill shook her head.
"It is really important, and it will be only for a moment, I promise. Please, please, please," Mauve cried as she clasped her palms together.
Mill looked torn, but then she sighed. "I will send a servant to get him."
"Thank you, Mill." Mauve smiled at her and watched as Mill called a servant who was quickly sent on the errand.
It didn’t take long, and a knock could be heard. Mill jerked and scrambled to her feet, then rushed to the door. She pulled it open before he could knock again, and Louis’s eyes widened in surprise, then his expression turned bland.
"Lord Louis," she bowed and stepped to the side.
"Please come in," Mauve called.
Louis tore his gaze from Mill and locked eyes with Mauve. He reached her bed in long strides, then mouthed the words, "What are you doing?"
"Mill, could you please get me something to drink?" she asked.
"Of course, right away." The words were barely out of her mouth before she fled the room.
Mauve had half-expected some protest or a firm refusal, but Mill had made herself scarce the instant she asked. She turned her gaze to Louis with a frown on her face. He most definitely had something to do with it.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Also, have you lost it? Do you have any idea what Jael would do if he found me here?"
"Shush, I will make it quick. I sent a letter to my brother, mostly to inform him of the pregnancy and also to ask him to come here. Why? I intend to talk about magic with him."
"What?"
"Let me finish," she narrowed her eyes at him. She had to get it all out at once because once Mill returned, the conversation would be over. "Jael is averse to using magic because it is me, but what if it was other people? You could teach them magic, and they’d help with Palers. What do you think?"
Louis grabbed his temples. "Slow down, let me process exactly what you’re telling me. You are saying I should teach humans magic in exchange for them setting Palers on fire?"
Mauve nodded excitedly.
"Have you thought this through?" he asked.
"Pretty much, but I haven’t had any chance to run it through anyone. Jael is a no-go, and I can’t even talk to you."
"No, Mauve. You clearly haven’t. Do you understand the implications of what would happen if magic got out?"
"I don’t expect you to teach everyone. Besides, you said not all humans can even learn magic in the first place, but I am clearly the only solution right now, and Jael would never consider it. We can’t just not do something."
At this point, Louis was about to crush his skull. He pulled his fingers from his head. "Mauve, I am not supposed to teach you magic. That is the reason we were secretive about it, not that Jael would be angry. Do you have any idea what would happen if the lords found out I was teaching a horde of humans magic? Do you have any idea what sort of attacks Jael would receive?"
"What, would they rather get killed by Palers than let humans help?" Mauve asked, breathing hard. She had thought Louis would be receptive to the idea, but he seemed to think she was out of her mind.
Two knocks and Louis swore. "We have to talk about this another time. Surely, you didn’t write something like ’Louis will teach humans magic, send as many humans as possible?’"
"Shut up! I am not stupid," Mauve snapped just as the door opened.
"I wasn’t sure if you wanted juice or water, so I brought both." Mill didn’t look up as she spoke.
"Thank you, Mill," Mauve said with a bright smile. She turned to Louis. "I will speak to Jael tonight."
Louis’s eyes widened in horror, and Mauve gave him an unimpressed look while shaking her head. "Hopefully, I can at least get him to let us test it out."
"After coming up with that absurd idea? You don’t even know if it would work."
"I know it will, but there is nothing wrong with confirming. Jael wants me to have nothing to do with it. If it will convince him, I don’t see why I shouldn’t use it."
"Don’t even," he said and started toward the door. "We haven’t concluded on this, my lady. I’d advise not doing as you like."
Mauve narrowed her eyes at him. He wasn’t even helping, just telling her the idea was stupid. But what else could they do in a situation like this? So much time was going by; what if they got attacked by Palers again?
"My lady," Mill was calling. It wasn’t until she touched Mauve that she heard. "Is everything alright?"
"Yeah," Mauve said and stretched out her hand for a cup.
