Chapter 681: 681. Message From Malcolm

"You should get some rest," Louis stated suddenly.

"What? I still haven’t gotten the hang of the new spell. I can’t even say it right. You can’t just cut it short. Who knows when you’ll teach me again?"

Louis laughed. "Unless you want us to get caught, I suggest we stop now." He replied and packed up the books.

"I don’t think anyone will. Jael is busy, and nobody ever really comes here," Mauve said as she tried to convince Louis. She didn’t feel tired and was really worried about when the next time would be.

"Are you not aware of the time? It is almost time for the second meal, and if I am correct, a certain potato head would come barging right through the doors."

"What? I don’t think that much time has passed."

"Yes, it—" The rest of Louis’s words were cut short as the doors were thrown open. "Oh, look who is here."

"Louis," Jael called as he stomped into the room. He didn’t look very pleased. "I told you to take her to her room."

Mauve was up on her feet already. "It was my idea to come here."

Jael looked at Mauve, who was already walking to him, and then back to Louis, who shrugged. "I guess I’ll be on my way," Louis said. "I have a few things to do before the second meal."

Before Jael could say anything in response, Louis was already out the door. He turned his gaze to Mauve, who was looking up at him. "Is everything alright?" she asked, with concern clear on her face.

Jael’s face softened, and he lightly touched Mauve’s face. "Yes," he mumbled. "We should get you to eat."

"I am actually not that hungry," she mumbled. "But of course, I’ll eat," she added at Jael’s frown.

He looked relieved, and she clung to his arm, almost certain that something had happened. "Did something happen?" she asked as he led her to the door.

"Well, I don’t want you to worry, but I’ll discuss it with you after the second meal."

"Promise?" she asked as she looked up at him.

"Yeah," he replied and smiled.

She hoped it was nothing serious, but with Jael, it was quite hard to tell. They got to the dining hall to see Louis already seated; Mauve wondered if he really had something to do or if he didn’t just want to walk with them.

She got seated and was served her food immediately after Jael was. This was so common now it was no longer unusual, but this wasn’t the only thing that was a bit strange. Servants would bow to her at every turn, and they all seemed more than eager to take her orders. Mauve couldn’t help but enjoy this a little more.

She ate more than she needed to, and by the time the second meal was over, Mauve didn’t think she could walk from the amount of food she ate. She surely felt pregnant now. She wondered if the session with Louis was starting to take a toll because she felt a little sleepy.

Jael didn’t leave her to Louis this time, and he took her to his room. Mauve thought the air suddenly felt serious, and she couldn’t help the way her heart squeezed. He closed the door and pulled her to the bed. Mauve didn’t fight, didn’t ask any questions, she just diligently followed behind him.

He sat down on the bed and sat her on his legs. He held both her palms in one hand while the other supported her back as she sat across his legs. "I got a letter from your brother," he mumbled.

"Malcolm?" Mauve asked excitedly. Of course, it was Malcolm; no one else in her family would send her a letter.

"Yes," he replied, and his hand on her palms tightened.

Mauve felt all her excitement drain and fear spark in her eyes at the thought that something must have happened to Malcolm. "Is he alright?" she asked.

"Yes," Jael replied immediately. "There is no reason to worry about your brother. Malcolm is in great health, and he wants you to know that."

"That’s very relieving to hear. Then what’s wrong?" she asked as he lifted her hand to touch his face.

Jael was looking for a way to break the news to Mauve but realized he was more affected by this than he should be. This news made him realize Mauve’s fate wouldn’t have been far from this, and the idea that he might not be able to hold her on his legs like this crushed him. He didn’t know how she survived the White Disease, but he was very grateful.

He knew he could only state it as he had read it. There was no other way to break the news. He cleared his throat and held Mauve tighter. "Vae’s mother is dead."

Mauve gasped. She pulled her hands out of Jael’s grip and covered her mouth.

"As of the time Malcolm wrote the letter, she had been confirmed dead the night before. He wants me to tell you he is sorry he couldn’t save her."

She blinked once, twice, her eyes watering fast. A tear escaped before her lips quivered, and she sobbed. She wrapped her arms around Jael’s neck, and he held on to her.

"I am so sorry," he mumbled.

Mauve couldn’t even speak back; she was too busy crying. All she could think about was Vae and what she could possibly be going through. She had ended up in the cruel hands of Seraphino just to save her mother, and now she was dead.

There was also the fact that the same thing could have happened to her. Maybe if she had figured something out about how she had gotten better, she would have been able to help Vae’s mother, but the poor woman was dead now, and there was nothing she could do about it.

"Do you think I could have don—"

"What are you talking about? It is nothing short of a miracle you’re here now. There is nothing you could have done to change this, and I am really sorry you had to hear something this heartbreaking."

Mauve nodded into Jael’s shoulder as she cried. She would do her best to figure something out. There had to be some way, some cure. People couldn’t keep dying from the White Disease. First her mother and now Vae’s; she would do her best to make sure this didn’t happen again.
