Chapter 682. Private Acknowledgment

Chapter 682: 682. Private Acknowledgment

Mauve didn’t know when she fell asleep, and when she woke up, Jael was nowhere to be found, and Mill was in the corner of her room watching her. "My lady," she called, walking forward. "Are you okay?"

Mauve slowly nodded and sat upright. Mill was quick to support her. "How long was I asleep?"

"Not too long," Mill replied, standing to her full height.

Mauve grabbed her head; it was hurting a little. She was almost certain it had to do with all the crying she did before she fell asleep. This caused her to remember the reason she had been crying in the first place, and Mauve almost burst into tears again.

"I heard what happened," Mill suddenly said, her head bending low. "I am really sorry and sad that Vae has to go through something like that."

"I know," Mauve mumbled. She sniffled as she tried not to cry again. "I still can’t believe her mother is dead. That is so sad."

She didn’t mention that the same thing could have happened to her, but it was pretty clear both of them were thinking the same thing.

"Would you like something to eat?" Mill asked.

Mauve shook her head; she doubted she had the appetite for anything, and she knew she wouldn’t have been able to eat the second meal if she had found out beforehand.

"How about something to drink?" Mill insisted, the worry on her face growing.

Mauve shook her head once again. She just wanted to lay back down, but she could tell that wasn’t a good idea. "A walk," she mumbled.

"Yes," Mill replied enthusiastically. "A walk would be very nice. I will get you dressed so you can take a walk around the castle."

Mauve shook her head again. "Not the castle, outside. The night sky and the cool breeze would be really nice to walk under."

Mauve wondered if she was being a little too demanding of Mill, but she didn’t want to stay indoors. She wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it, and the rooftop was simply a glorified version of here. She could see the night sky, and that was pretty much it.

"I don’t know about that, but I will speak to the Primus," she replied.

Mauve could clearly see the hesitation on Mill’s face, and she felt bad. "No, don’t. I will just go back to sleep."

"Absolutely not!" Mill yelled. Mill could remember when Vae had left and Mauve had been too depressed to leave her bed. There would be no way she would let a repeat of that happen. "I will be right back."

She stomped to the door, shutting it behind her. Mauve didn’t say or react to this; she simply turned her gaze to the open window and stared out. The sky looked really bright, and it almost felt as though the moon called out to her.

It was comforting to know they were both under the same sky, and she wondered if Vae was currently looking at the sky. It was a pity she couldn’t make the journey to Greenham, but at least she could write a letter, and once she could do that without crying, she would.

Mauve heard a knock, and without even thinking about it, she mumbled, "Come in." Only after she had said these words did she realize the knock was a little different than what she was used to.

Mauve turned her head from the window and could barely contain her surprise when her eyes landed on Danag. "Danag," she called.

"My lady," he said with a bow.

"What’s going on?" she asked, looking around. Danag wasn’t the type to casually come to see her, so she hoped nothing was wrong.

"Please don’t fret, my lady," he said and slowly raised his head but kept his hands behind his back. "Mill ran into me as she searched for the Primus and asked that I keep an eye on you while she is away."

"Oh," Mauve said with a sigh. "You really shouldn’t have bothered. I have no plans to leave the room."

However, Mauve knew it wasn’t because Mill was scared she would leave the room, rather it was to make sure unwanted guests wouldn’t show up. She has had her fair share of that. She shook her head to prevent thinking about memories that were best left buried.

"It’s no trouble, and the Primus wouldn’t want you to be alone. I also wanted to take this opportunity to properly honor you as the Primus’ mate." At the end of his words, Danag bowed low with one hand behind his waist and another against his chest.

Mauve was completely taken aback. That was definitely the last thing she was expecting him to do. "Thank you," she simply said with a soft smile.

"You shouldn’t thank me," he said with his head still bowed. "I know it was pretty clear I did not approve of you beforehand, and I have done a few things to cause you to leave, but you have been chosen by the Primus as his mate, and my allegiance is sworn to him, and now it is also sworn to you. You have my word!"

"Danag," Mauve called and brought her hands to her mouth. "I’m glad you approve of me now."

"I approve of the Primus’ decision. In this situation, it is quite impossible to make a wrong choice. He marked you, and that simply means he wants you and no one else to be his mate. I accept his decision and formally acknowledge you as his mate. It might not seem like much, my lady, but I hope this does mean something to you as it does to me. I wanted to give a private acknowledgment before the party. I do hope you will accept this."

"Yes," Mauve said as she got out of bed. She made to bend her knees, but Danag stopped her.

"No, don’t. From now on, you only bend those knees for the Sire. The rest of us are to bow to you." He raised his head and stared her in the eye. "You are now the equivalent of a Queen. I am nothing but your humble servant." He brought his eyes down to her feet.
