Chapter 680: 680. Simply For This Moment
The next day came quickly, and soon enough, Mauve was dressed for the first meal. She felt refreshed and was in a good mood. Jael gave her a knowing look as she ate her breakfast, and she had to fight the urge to smack him; with the way she was blushing, she was worried everyone would be able to tell.
The first meal was quiet, and no one brought up the announcement Jael made the day before. Jevera was also seated at the table with a very sour look on her face. Aside from the killing look in her eyes, there was barely anything out of place.
Mauve tore her gaze away from the vampire, noticing that she didn’t look in her direction. She wasn’t complaining; she preferred to be completely ignored rather than otherwise. She already knew Jevera would never accept her as Jael’s mate, and she couldn’t blame her. She knew she would feel the same way if the roles were reversed, which was a bit funny, as she had told Louis she would be fine if Jael picked a mate. But now that the reality of that was completely impossible, she knew she wouldn’t be able to bear it simply because of how she felt right now.
She turned to look at Jael with a bright smile on her face. It was still a little hard to believe that he chose her, even though it was clearly not the expected thing to do. The fact that she was carrying his child made this just the cherry on top. She couldn’t help but think she had been born simply for this moment.
Jael raised his head and caught her gaze. He frowned a little as he seemed to try to figure out if something was wrong, but he quickly smiled back when he noticed her smile. However, his smile quickly turned to a smirk, and Mauve was forced to turn her face away. She knew immediately that it would be at her own risk to keep staring.
At the end of the first meal, Jael handed Mauve to Louis. He didn’t seem very pleased by this, but Erick had whispered to him towards the end of the meal, and Jael’s expression had changed.
She could tell it was serious, so serious that he couldn’t see her to her room himself, leaving her with Louis. As Jael walked away with Erick, Louis stretched out his palm to Mauve, and she accepted.
"I truly cannot remember the last time we were alone," Louis said and looked down at Mauve with a smile.
"I don’t think it has been that long," she replied, unable to help smiling back at him.
"Well, the last time doesn’t count as a certain person barged in and pulled you away."
Mauve nodded as she recalled. She held the hem of her dress with her free hand as they went up the stairs. "I do hope you do not have a grudge about what transpired at the time," Mauve asked and turned to look at Louis’s face, hoping she could get a read on his face.
Louis didn’t look at her. "I have long forgotten about the matter." This was quite true, as Louis truly didn’t think there was anything Jael could do that would be unforgivable. This was the price he had to pay for staying away.
"I am glad," Mauve said. One could hear the smile in her voice. "Do you have any idea what that was about?" she asked as they got to the top of the stairs.
"What Erick told Jael?" he asked, and Mauve nodded. Louis shook his head. "I have no idea."
"I think it must have been something serious."
"Maybe, but it is certainly not in your place to worry. You are not allowed to do that, especially right now. All you have to do is make sure you get enough sleep, eat, and get adequate rest."
"Is that not the same thing as sleeping?" Mauve asked with a laugh. "But I get it; I will get as much rest and sleep as possible."
"Good," Louis replied and tried to lead Mauve to her room, but she stopped him. "What are you doing?" he asked when she didn’t move.
"That is my line," she responded. "We are supposed to be heading to the library."
"No, we are not," he replied and tried to pull her to the room, but Mauve wouldn’t budge.
"Louis, please. We never know when else we will get a chance. At this point, I am likely to forget all that I have learned."
"Well, I have bad news for you; for a year, you will definitely forget more."
"A year?" Mauve asked with a frown.
Louis looked at her. "You don’t know? What on earth do you know then?"
"I don’t know," Mauve replied, confused.
"Fine, we will head to the library, but it is for a very different purpose."
Mauve didn’t argue; besides, she was very curious about what she did not know. She was also very sure that if they did manage to get to the library, she could convince Louis to teach her more spells, so there was no disadvantage to this situation.
She walked a step behind him as he led her to the library. It was dark when they got there, and Louis got a few servants to turn on the candlelights as he did not want to leave her alone.
When the servants were gone and Mauve was seated, she asked, "What is this business about a year?"
Louis slowly walked to sit across from her. "Vampire pregnancies are usually for twelve to thirteen months, with twelve being the average. However, the fact that the baby is also partly human might change this, but I do not think it would be any less than ten months, which is still approximately a year."
"Oh," Mauve replied and instinctively touched her stomach. There was a lot she needed to learn, and it wasn’t just about humans but vampires too. "Is there anything else I need to know?"
"Are you not bothered by this?" Louis asked.
"Why should I be?" she asked with a frown, wondering if there was something she missed.
"Never mind," Louis said with a small laugh. He should have known she would be just like this. "Right now, nothing else, but that will surely change as your pregnancy progresses."
"I see," she said. "I want to do everything right. I know you are worried about me, and I know nothing like this has ever happened before, but I just know it is right."
Louis sighed. "I know this might be a little cruel, and I truly don’t care how you feel about this, but if there ever comes a time when this pregnancy poses a threat to your life, I would choose—"
"The baby," Mauve completed. "I will pray it never comes to that, but if it does, choose the baby. That’s what I want."
Louis knew he would never do that, but he had no intention of telling Mauve this. He also knew Jael wouldn’t want that, and neither would the baby.
"Would you like to practice some magic?" he asked.
"Really?" Mauve asked with a bright smile. "What brought this on?"
"Yes or no?" he asked sternly. It was either this, or she would know exactly what his answer was.
