Chapter 657. Fast Asleep
Chapter 657: 657. Fast Asleep
The first thing he heard was her soft snoring. Jael smiled to himself and walked further into the room. He sat on the bed and touched the side of her face. She stirred but didn’t open her eyes.
"You should wake up and eat something," he said.
He lightly touched her lips and then pulled his hand away. Once again, he adjusted the covers that had somehow slipped past her arms to her waist. She was still undressed, and he wondered if he should dress her, but she didn’t seem cold or bothered by the lack of clothes, so he dismissed the thought.
"I will return just before the second meal; you should be awake by then," Jael said.
He slowly stood up and walked out of the room. However, when he returned just before the second meal, Mauve was still asleep, and a worried Mill stood by the side of the bed.
"What’s going on?" Jael asked as soon as he walked in.
"Sire!" Mill cried and started to rush forward but stopped herself and bowed to him.
Jael frowned. "Is she not awake yet?" he asked.
"No," Mill shook her head. "I was worried since all I brought yesterday was breakfast, and I tried to wake her up, but she wouldn’t wake up."
"She should have slept enough by now. She can’t keep sleeping," Jael said, walking to the bed.
He lifted her, but Mauve fell on him, her eyes shut. She was still breathing softly, an indication that she was fast asleep. He shook her gently, and she mumbled some inaudible words but didn’t open her eyes.
"Mauve," he called. "You can keep sleeping. Wake up."
"Nothing."
"Do you think you could bathe her? Maybe that would wake her up."
Mill nodded. "I will bring her bath water right away."
Jael nodded and gently tapped Mauve as she lay on his chest to try to get her to wake up, but Mauve didn’t budge. He took the covers off her and placed her on his legs, but she still kept sleeping. This was starting to get concerning.
He kept holding her until Mill returned with the bath water. He lifted her off the bed and placed her in the water, adjusting her head so it wouldn’t hang off the side. Her hands fell to the side, and he failed to catch them before they touched the ground.
"I can take it from here, Sire," Mill said.
Jael nodded and took a step back. The situation left a funky taste in his mouth. She was just too tired, was the only thing he could tell himself. She just needed some more rest, and she would wake up soon enough, he tried to tell himself. However, he couldn’t deny the fact that this was something to be very worried about.
It didn’t matter how much sleep she had gotten; Mauve always knew when he came to the bed, but she didn’t even open her eyes briefly when they tried so hard to wake her up, even after dropping her in a tub of warm water.
Jael just watched as Mill washed her up. She dried her and dressed her in some comfortable clothes and got her back in bed. All the while, Mauve didn’t open her eyes at all. Mill was quiet throughout this; she just concentrated on getting Mauve cleaned and dressed for bed.
Mill turned to Jael, who sat next to Mauve, lightly touching her as he looked at her with concern. She twisted her fingers together and shuffled on her feet as she watched them.
"Is there something you want to say, Mill?" Jael asked without looking at her.
"I—I wanted to confirm something. I don’t mean to intrude, and I know it’s not my place to ask, but I can’t help but confirm. I—I might be wrong, and please forgive me if I am..." she rambled.
"Out with it, Mill. You might as well ask."
"Okay, I apologize, Sire." She bowed. "Did you choose Mauve as your mate?"
Jael’s hands froze on her body while Mill held her head bent. She shut her eyes and thin her lips as she waited for some scolding or anything else. When Jael didn’t say anything for a while, she lifted her head to see.
"You can tell?" he asked as their eyes met.
Mill nodded. "At first, I thought I was sensing wrong, but the instant I was washing her up, I could tell something was different, and the bite marks on her neck looked a little different from the usual feeding marks."
"I see," Jael said and turned away from Mill. "I didn’t think she would have the same reaction as vampires," he mumbled.
"Mauve is your mate," she said.
"Yeah," Jael replied.
"Oh my goodness!" Mill screamed.
"I would prefer you keep this a secret," Jael shot Mill a look. "For the time being. Right now," he turned back to Mauve, "We need to figure out what’s wrong with her."
Mill nodded. "Certainly. I don’t think we can do much for now. I will remain here and keep trying to get her to wake up. Nothing looks out of place. There are a few bruises, but nothing that wouldn’t heal."
Jael ground his jaw as Mill mentioned the bruises. Was he the reason why she wouldn’t wake up? Or was it something else? Should he just let her sleep, or should they do their best to wake her? Would she never wake up? Jael’s stomach churned. He wasn’t going to let anything happen to her, even if it killed him.
"Keep an eye on her," Jael said. "The instant there is any change, let me know immediately. You’re not permitted to leave the room, and no one else is allowed in here. If you leave, make sure you return immediately."
Mill nodded vigorously. "I don’t need to do anything right now. I will remain in the room. You can count on me to keep the Primus’ mate safe."
