The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 656. Inquisition

Chapter 656: 656. Inquisition

"Don’t give me that; you were practically locked up and unreachable. I doubt that happened because of nothing," Louis replied.

"Well, I say it is nothing. Are we done here?" Jael asked.

"Would you try to be agreeable for once?" Louis asked.

"I don’t understand why you’re so concerned about this. It is none of your business."

"Are you kidding me? Have you looked at yourself this morning? You look like a ghost. There are bags under your eyes, which means you didn’t get enough sleep. Somehow, it looks like you lost half your original weight literally overnight. I don’t want to imagine what state Mauve is in."

"What are you trying to say?" Jael asked darkly. "What goes on between Mauve and me is none of your business. You should learn not to stick your nose in other people’s private matters."

"It might be private, but I have seen more often than not that you don’t have a working head on your shoulders, especially when it involves Mauve. You lose all cognitive abilities and logical reasoning. And I am quite worried about Mauve. You’re too myopic to see the bigger picture. You only care about your current situation."

"This conversation is over," Jael slammed his palms on the desk. "I don’t need to explain myself to you."

"No, it’s not. You owe me," Louis’s eyes blazed.

"No, I don’t. Don’t be ridiculous. You could have left me to die. You don’t get to act like you’re the ruling voice in this situation simply because you saved your Primus."

Louis laughed. "I never thought the day would come when you would throw that word in my face. You seem to hate when I call you by your title."

"Louis, you should leave," Jael spat out.

"Not without an explanation."

"You don’t deserve one."

Louis sighed and took a seat. "I understand that my approach was a bit over the top, but you must understand that I am worried here."

"Why do you sound so certain that something is wrong?"

"Because you’re acting like nothing is, even though Mill was clearly worried to death yesterday. But you seem completely unbothered, which means you figured out what I could be and you don’t think it’s worth worrying about," Louis stated.

"As I keep saying, I don’t need to explain myself to you."

"I am worried."

"We don’t need your worry."

"Maybe you don’t, but Mauve does."

"She is my wife, not yours. She is none of your business."

"Don’t you dare say that. She means a lot to you, which makes her just as important as you are to me."

"I think you are overestimating our relationship. The only reason I have let you speak for this long is because you did help. Now get out."

"I won’t. Not until you tell me what’s going on."

"I already said nothing is," Jael smirked.

"Then why do you look like the cat that swallowed the canary? You are annoyed about my presence, but you seem completely bothered. You keep sneaking out little smiles that I can’t help but question what’s happening."

"As I said, it’s none of your business."

"Well, I am not leaving until you tell me."

Jael smiled and stood to his feet. "You can do as you like."

"See, you seem unnecessarily happy. I don’t get how anyone would look this happy while looking like this."

Jael didn’t reply; he just walked straight to the door. It should be almost time for the first meal. He would try to check on Mauve after then. She should still be sleeping peacefully. Since Mill didn’t mention anything to him yet, he would leave her for as long as he could.

"Are you even listening to me?" Louis asked and pulled Jael by the shoulder.

"Cut it out!" Jael said, glaring at him. "I have listened to your rants. As you said, I am in a good mood, so you better not push it."

Louis lifted his hand. "As you wish, Sire. I apologize for my rudeness."

"You can shove it up your rear end." Jael turned and walked. Louis didn’t go after him; instead, he stayed behind, rooted to the spot as he watched Jael go.

Jael made his way to the stairs. He paused slightly as he passed by his bedroom, but nothing seemed out of place. It was pretty quiet, and he knew she was still fast asleep. He fought the urge to spend the morning with her as he had a lot of things to do today.

He walked down the stairs and ran into a servant at the foot of the stairs. The servant almost dropped what they held as they caught sight of him. "Sire," the servant said with a bow and stepped to the side.

Jael didn’t say anything and made his way to the dining hall. The guards greeted him abruptly and rushed to open the doors. He walked in, and for a second, froze before the vampires rose to their feet. Jael walked to his seat and dropped down.

"Did something happen?" Danag asked.

Jael narrowed his eyes at Danag. "Why?"

"You look like you barely got enough sleep, Sire, and Mauve isn’t with you, so I couldn’t help but assume something was wrong."

"Nothing," Jael said. "No need to be concerned."

"Yes, Sire."

Jael doubted he was in that poor shape. He didn’t feel any different—maybe a lot hungry, but he didn’t even feel exhausted or anything of the sort. It probably had something to do with the current situation; it felt as though he was riding on clouds, and he doubted anything could ruin his mood.

Louis didn’t join them for the first meal, and even after the meal was over, there was still no sign of him. Jael didn’t think much about this, and after he was done eating, he left the dining hall and made his way back to his room. He wanted to check on Mauve before attending to his tasks.
