The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 658. Vampire’s Baby
Chapter 658: 658. Vampire’s Baby
"You can count on me to keep the Primus’ mate safe," Mill promised.
Jael tried not to smile at the way Mill addressed Mauve, but he couldn’t deny the joy he felt. She was his, for all to see, and there was no question about it. Unfortunately, she wasn’t waking up, and there was no one around with the expertise he could consult.
Kieran wasn’t in the castle, and the physician was long gone. Besides, it would take at least two nights to get him here, even if they set out now. Mauve might die of starvation by then. Should they try to force her to eat and hope she could chew and swallow even though she was fast asleep?
He turned around and walked out of his room. He would have to wait and see. She was still sleeping; nothing seemed off, and if she was bothered enough, she mumbled a few things but just wasn’t waking up. Was she that exhausted?
"So engrossed you can’t even notice my presence?" Louis’s voice broke through Jael’s thoughts as soon as he opened the door.
Jael’s gaze darkened. "What do you want?"
"You look quite solemn," Louis said, trying to glance into the room. Jael shut the door immediately. Louis eyed him suspiciously. "What’s happening? I might be able to help."
Jael folded his arms and sighed. Louis was persistent, and he would be lying if he said Louis didn’t care about Mauve. He might be able to offer some insights and options. Besides, he was almost desperate to talk to someone he couldn’t stand.
"This way," Jael replied, pushing himself forward and leading Louis to his study.
He took his seat and stared at the letters he needed to reply to. He was interrupted by Louis, and now he was too distracted by his thoughts to even think about what any Lord could be saying.
"What’s wrong?" Louis asked again.
"Mauve isn’t waking up," Jael said.
Louis frowned and took a seat. "Maybe she is just tired. I don’t see how that’s worth worrying about. A few more hours and she would be awake."
"I am not so sure about that."
Louis’s forehead creased. "What happened? What did you do?" he spat out.
"Why do you think I am at fault here?"
"I don’t think you are," Louis said with a loud sigh. "You’re acting guilty. Your mood keeps shifting from happy to concerned."
"I didn’t do anything," Jael explained. "I think she’s pregnant."
Louis looked at him as if he had grown two horns. "That’s impossible."
"I thought you had an inkling—that’s why you were pestering me earlier."
"I just thought you probably did something stupid. You were too calm and had a hint of pride, and you spent all day with Mauve. I assumed it was one of your antics that would come back to bite us. Are you pulling my leg, or did you actually get her pregnant?" Louis asked.
"Why do you look like that?" Jael asked.
Louis leaned back and touched his temples. He held this position for a few seconds and then lifted himself. "Please tell me you only made the assumption and there isn’t conclusive evidence that she is pregnant."
"There is," Jael whispered.
"Shit!" Louis swore and stood to his feet.
"That’s not supposed to be your response."
"This is why I can’t stand you. I understand that you’re happy, but process what you just said," Louis said, slamming his hand on the table.
"Mauve is pregnant," he repeated.
"A human is pregnant with a vampire’s baby! Fuck!" Louis spun around. "This is even worse than I imagined."
"Technically, the baby would be a mix of both."
"What difference does that make?" Louis asked. "Do you think you’re the first vampire to be with a human? There is a reason we don’t have half-vampires roaming around. Fuck! She wouldn’t be able to carry the pregnancy to term. Hell! The last birth we witnessed was with the twins, and their mother died. Vampires don’t give birth easily."
"Don’t say such terrible things. You know there were complications with the birth. It won’t happen to Mauve," Jael said.
"Really? You don’t sound so certain. Let’s say I am exaggerating the situation. Do you think now is the best time for her to get pregnant? Less than a week ago, you almost drained her of blood. Before that, she lay in bed sick, and we half thought she wouldn’t make it. She still has marks from the illness, and now she’s not waking up. Just beautiful."
Jael placed his elbows on the table as Louis’s words ran through his mind. He hadn’t thought of this. He had never even considered the possibility of them having a child together, and when it happened, he was overcome with joy and couldn’t see the downsides. He knew Louis was right. Mauve was in no state to be pregnant, let alone with a vampire’s baby. He didn’t know what to do, but he knew he couldn’t lose her no matter what. He wouldn’t be able to bear it.
Louis took a deep breath and pulled his hands from the table. "She might not be pregnant; it could be something else. I didn’t mean to bring such terrible news. I just wanted you to understand the situation. Pregnancy right now would be too dangerous for her. I still think it’s impossible."
"Leave me alone, Louis," Jael raised his head from the table. "Unless you have some way to wake her up, I don’t want to hear it. I’d like to be left alone for the rest of the day. If anything important needs my attention, you handle it."
"As you wish, I will..." Louis paused and moved to the side to make way for Jael.
Jael stood to his feet and slowly left the study before Louis could complete his sentence. Louis just stood there standing as he walked Jael leave. He pushed open the door without processing this action and made his way down the path.
