Chapter 639. Grilled Steak

Chapter 639: 639. Grilled Steak

Mauve opened her eyes to see she was wrapped in an unmoving blanket. Thankfully, there was enough space for her to breathe. She tried to pull back, but Jael held her in a deadlock.

"Not yet," he mumbled and tightened his arms around her some more.

"Jael," she giggled. "We are going to miss the first meal at this rate."

"No, we won’t, since we would be having it right here."

Mauve pulled her head back to look up at him. Not that it made much difference; she still couldn’t see his face. "No, we are not," she mumbled.

"We both need rest. I’d rather spend it with you," he said.

Mauve scrunched her face as she tried to come up with a good enough reason why this wasn’t a good idea, but she knew Jael would counter everything. She didn’t feel as tired as she did before she slept, and now that she knew he was alright, she couldn’t be happier.

Mauve jerked her head towards the door as a knock echoed in the room, and then the doors were thrown open. Mill walked in holding a light. She walked in and closed the door behind herself. She stepped closer with the light in front of her and almost dropped it on the ground when she noticed Mauve wasn’t alone in bed.

"Sire!" She yelled out. "I didn’t know you were here. Oh, thank Goodness. I am so glad you are alright."

"It’s fine, Mill," he whispered, still clutching onto Mauve. "We would be spending most of the day here."

"Of course." Mill bowed. "Is there anything you’d like me to do?" She asked.

"Just our first meal."

"Yes, Sire," she said and slowly raised her head. "How did you feel, Mauve? Still lightheaded?" She asked.

Mauve shook her head. "I am just a little hungry."

"I will make sure to bring more than enough food. Jean said he would like to check on you as soon as you’re awake. If now isn’t a bad time, I will send for him. If it is, I would ask him to come at a later time."

"It’s not!" Mauve said and struggled to pull out of Jael’s grasp as she kept her gaze on Mill, which was a little hard to do with how hard Jael clung onto her. "You can ask him to come."

"After a couple of minutes," Jael interjected.

"No, he can come now." Mauve turned her head and shot a glare at Jael, but her gaze immediately softened.

His face was red and burnt. She could tell the burns were healing, but she could only imagine he must be in some pain. His hair covered the front of his face and kept a bit of it hidden, but it wasn’t enough to hide the burns.

"Don’t stare at me like that," he said and let go of her before rolling onto his back and then turning his head away from her as if he was trying to hide his face.

"I will leave this here," Mill dropped the light and slowly retreated out of the room.

"Jael," Mauve called as she pulled closer to him.

He still kept his face away from her. She was sure his face wasn’t the only part of his body with burns, but she couldn’t really see any on his palm. Maybe on his back. She remembered Louis had more visible burns, and they had looked equally painful.

"It must hurt," she said and rested her head on his chest.

"Not that badly. It is more annoying than painful."

"Well, it has healed. When I first saw you, you had blisters all over. This isn’t as bad," she said, trying to cheer him. Who would have thought he cared about his appearance? She was just glad he was alright. It didn’t matter if his face was in this shape. She knew she would take this over him being dead.

"Besides," she added when he didn’t say anything. "Vampires heal in less than two weeks. By then, there would barely be any trace of this—"

Mauve jerked as her door was pushed open and Louis walked in. Jael sat up immediately, mindful of her head, which he lifted with his body.

"Did you not learn about not barging into people’s rooms?" Jael said.

"Is this the thanks I get for saving your ass?" He spat out. "Besides, this is Mauve’s room. You can imagine my horror when I discovered you weren’t in yours. You shouldn’t be moving around."

"Louis," Mauve called. "Did you sleep well?" She asked.

He turned his gaze to her, and his face softened. His face wasn’t as burnt as Jael’s, but his arms were. One looked to be in a more severe condition than the other but wasn’t too bad that she feared for him.

"Hard to do that when you have burns all over. That doesn’t matter, how are you?"

"I am good," she grinned.

"Feel weird?" He asked as he stopped in front of the bed. "Dizzy or any other symptoms you might get from someone almost bleeding you out?"

Mauve didn’t miss the way Jael stiffened behind her. "Don’t say that, Louis. I am fine, really. I shouldn’t even be in bed, but I’ll rest just to be safe."

"You’ve barely recovered from your last illness. You shouldn’t have to go through this." Mauve didn’t miss Louis’s glance in Jael’s direction.

"Be careful. If you think something is wrong, don’t fail to mention it. And Sire," he rolled the title on his tongue. "Try not to do anything reckless. I will handle the patrol and anything else. Get as much rest as you might need." His voice didn’t sound as harsh as it did earlier.

"You don’t get to tell me what to do. I know exactly what I need to do."

"Good," Louis said and took a step back. "Mistakes like this are costly. Thankfully, it didn’t cost us too much this time except you looking like someone left the steak a little too long on the grill."
