Chapter 638: 638. Peachy

Mauve’s eyes cracked open. Her room was dark; the candlelight must have gone out at some point. Something had woken her up, she was sure of it. She blinked, hoping her eyes would adjust to the darkness even though she knew that was practically impossible.

"You’re awake," he whispered.

"Jael!" She cried and tried to sit upright.

"Don’t move," he said, and she felt his hand on her arm to stop her from moving.

"How do you feel?" She asked as she laid back.

"I should be asking you that," he said.

She could tell he was looking at her, but it was annoying that she couldn’t see his face. All she could tell was that he was sitting not too far away from her, and if she stretched, she could touch him. Mauve stretched her hand until she touched his back, then lifted herself from the bed and leaned against him.

"You shouldn’t be moving," he said.

"I am okay," she mumbled as she rubbed her nose against his back. "You were unconscious and you wouldn’t wake up no matter what we did."

"Yeah," he said. His voice sounded clogged, and he cleared his throat.

"I was worried," she said.

"I know," he replied.

"Does anywhere hurt?" She asked.

"Nope, except for the burns I got from the sun, I’m peachy."

"Sorry."

"Thanks."

"What happened?" She asked. She had been too out of it after she gave him blood to ask Louis what had happened, and asking why he was bleeding out was definitely not the thing to do.

"I was attacked by a Paler," he said.

"I know that much," she pressed her face against his back. "I meant, how did that happen?"

"I may have strayed a little too far from the castle," he whispered.

"Was it because I asked you to let me go outside?" She blurted.

"Of course not. I just needed a moment."

"And you had to go that far off." Mauve’s voice sounded muffled as she pressed her face against his back. She should be angry; she was angry, but right now all her anger was being crushed by the overwhelming relief that he was all right. It was so heavy, she felt as though her chest would split open.

"I am sorry," he mumbled. "I didn’t mean to bother you and put you in any danger."

"Bother!" She yelled out in shock. "That’s not the word." Mauve sniffled, and she felt Jael turn his body. He pulled her from his back and placed her on his legs, then wrapped his arms around her. Mauve felt tears pour down her face as she wept.

"I was so scared and angry and mad and sad and worried and terrified. I tried to make you drink from my wrist and you didn’t even stir. You could have died. Why would you be so reckless? You could have died and, worst of all, I would have watched you die."

"I am sorry I made you go through that," he said as he held her even tighter.

Mauve sniffled. She wanted to yell at him more, but it was hard to do that when he wasn’t making excuses. When he was just letting her cry out and holding her close.

"Never make me go through that ever again. Promise me."

"I promise," he mumbled.

"You’re not allowed out of the castle alone. You’re not the only one who can give restrictions, you know. If you have to leave, you have to make sure you take at least one guard with you, or Louis or Danag, anyone. Just don’t go alone."

"I won’t," he mumbled.

"Promise me!"

"I promise."

Mauve hid her face in his chest as she sniffled and slowly calmed down. He caressed her hair and held her close to his body. She pulled away from his chest when she stopped crying and looked up but couldn’t see his face.

"It’s so dark, I wish I could see your face," she mumbled.

"It’s best if you don’t," he mumbled.

"Is it that bad?" She asked as she peered at him. "I don’t mind."

"I mind. I only like to look my best in front of you."

"That’s not possible," she giggled. "I don’t mind your worst. It makes the best of you worth it," she grinned up at him.

"I love you, you know that, right?"

Mauve pouted, "I don’t know. You wouldn’t have done that if you had thought even a little about me."

"I never stop thinking of you, never doubt this."

Mauve shut her eyes. "I believe you a little, but don’t do that again. I don’t know what I would have done if the worst had happened. I don’t even want to think about it."

"You won’t have to do that," he whispered. "Did you get this from me?" He asked as he traced the bandage on her arm.

Mauve blinked; she had forgotten about that, but it was impressive he could see it in the dark. Her first instinct was to hide it, but she fought it and simply mumbled, "I might have tried something unorthodox, but it worked, and that’s really all that matters." She wasn’t about to tell him the true details.

"Was it Jean who wrapped it up for you?" He asked, his voice had gone dark and she didn’t want to imagine the look on his face.

"Yeah, it was just precautionary. Nothing to worry about," she tried to laugh it off but it felt awkward and Jael didn’t stop tracing her arm.

"How is your arm?" She asked as she tried to change the subject.

Jael shrugged, "I got enough blood. It should be healed now."

"Can I see it?" She shook her head. "I want to see it."

"After sunset. I didn’t mean to wake you up. I just wanted to see you."

Mauve blinked as she realized he had rushed to her side as soon as he had woken up. She beamed at him. "I am glad. I was really worried."

"You don’t have anything to worry about. I will be fine. We should go to sleep. I have kept you awake long enough."
