Chapter 640. Silent Company

Chapter 640: 640. Silent Company

Jael’s gaze darkened. "Are you done here?" he asked.

Louis pinched the bridge of his nose, now free of bandages. "I suppose I am, as long as you get the hint. Mauve," he nodded in her direction and turned away.

"Thank you, Louis," she called after him, waving.

Jael lay back down, pulling Mauve with him. He used his arm to support the back of his head as he held her to his body. Mauve leaned into him and slowly looked up at Jael. She couldn’t tell if he was angry or not.

He glanced down at her without moving his head. "Do you have something you want to say?" he asked.

Mauve shook her head. "I was just wondering if you were alright," she mumbled, looking down and folding her arms to her chest.

"I’m alright, you don’t have to worry about a thing. I will be healed up in a few days," he said, ruffling her hair.

Mauve grabbed the top of her head, trying to stop him from ruffling it further. "That’s what I told you," she replied.

"Yeah," he agreed.

Mauve nodded and saw Jael’s eyes turn to the door. "Is something coming?" she asked.

"Yeah," he said, lying back and closing his eyes. "My head hurts."

Mauve sat up immediately. "Is it bad?" she asked.

"No it isn’t. Probably just because my body’s working overtime. That’s not important, Jean is here to check on you."

Mauve turned her gaze to the door, and a knock resounded in the room. She adjusted her dress and slowly got out of bed. Jael didn’t stop her but closely watched her rush to the door.

She pulled it open, and there was Jean standing right behind it. "Hello, Jean," she said with a huge smile on her face.

"Mill said you were awake and it was fine to check up on you, but by the looks of things, I didn’t need to do that. You seem much better than yesterday. The color is back to your face, and you don’t seem dazed or lightheaded."

Mauve nodded to everything he said. "I feel very fine. I think my reaction yesterday was the shock from everything. I feel much better, that’s for sure."

"Have you eaten anything since you woke up?" Jean asked as Mauve stepped back to let him into the room.

Mauve shook her head as she turned her back to him, walking to the bed. "Not yet, but Mill should be here with my breakfast soon enough. Don’t worry, I will make sure to eat as much as I can."

"I would appreciate that. I don’t think I have to do much, but I would like to change the bandage on your arm. I think by the end of the night you should be able to take it off."

"Thank you," she said. "It doesn’t hurt as much as it did last night, so I am sure it should be healed to some extent."

"Yeah, that should be the..."

Mauve’s expression became puzzled as Jean’s voice trailed off. She turned around to see him rooted to the spot, his eyes locked on Jael, who lay on the bed.

"Your Highness, I didn’t realize you were here."

"Carry on, Jean. Pretend I am not here," Jael said without looking at him. His arm that was under his head now lay over his face as though it was an attempt to cover it.

"Okay," Jean mumbled, tearing his gaze away.

Mauve continued her walk to the bed, standing in front of it for a second as she stared at Jael. He made her bed look small, occupying more than half of it. She couldn’t remember the last time they had both laid here; he made her bed look tiny.

She turned around and dropped onto the bed. Jean pulled a seat closer and sat down in front of her. He glanced at Jael, who hadn’t stirred, and then stretched out his hand to Mauve. She handed it to him without hesitation.

He pulled off the bandage, and she winced as he pulled it off the dried blood. He squinted and brought his gaze closer, then looked up at her face. "I don’t think I need to wrap this again. It’s healed enough."

"You think so?" Mauve asked as she pulled her hand from his grasp and peered at it. The holes around her wrist were covered. There had been bruising around her arm from where Jael had held onto her before she slept, but it was fading now.

"Yeah," he replied.

She nodded in agreement and gave him back her hand. "It looks okay."

"Does it hurt?"

Mauve shook her head. "It is definitely better than before I slept."

"Yeah, the bruising has also gone down."

"I noticed," she said.

"If you feel off, I can apply some balm to help."

Mauve shook her head. "I don’t think I need that," she replied.

"It wouldn’t hurt," Jael mumbled.

Mauve turned her head in his direction. She hadn’t thought he was listening to their conversation. "I suppose it wouldn’t," she replied and turned back to Jean.

"Well, then I will give it to Mill. It is best to apply it after you’ve washed off for the day."

Mauve nodded. "Thank you, and I am sorry that you have to wait some more days."

"Don’t mention it, Princess. I really do not mind."

Mauve grinned at him. "I will walk you to the door."

"No need. Please try not to move around too much. You might feel fine now, but you did lose a lot of blood yesterday. It would be best to get as much rest as you need just to be safe."

Mauve nodded. "I will do that. Thank you so much," she smiled at him, and he nodded before standing and heading for the door.

Mauve quickly climbed back onto the bed and settled into Jael’s arms. He didn’t say much, not even when Mill brought their meal. She didn’t try to force any conversation, instead did her best to enjoy his silent company.
