Chapter 621: 621. A Court Jester

Mauve stared at Jael with a dumbfounded look on her face as she spun around to face him while sitting by her dresser. Mill had taken a few steps back, having finished setting her up.

"What did you say?" she asked. Her expression showed she didn’t know if she should be impressed or horrified.

"You heard me," he said with a nonchalant shrug.

"I didn’t even use any today," she replied in horror.

"Well then, Mill, if you will be so kind," Jael prompted.

"No," Mauve said, glancing at Mill, who looked like she was holding back her laughter.

"You said to remind you next time," he further explained.

"I was merely joking," she retorted.

"I wasn’t."

"Jael," she called. "Let it go."

"No, you gave me your word."

"I said a few words. I didn’t make any promises."

"We are going to be late for the first meal, Mauve." He walked closer to where she sat. "Are you sure you’ll like that?"

He bent a little, his eyes on her lips as he spoke. Mauve shut her eyes immediately and turned away from him. She didn’t like that he was enjoying himself.

"Sure, have it your way, but don’t blame me when you look like you work in the circus."

He stretched out his hand and lightly ran his thumb over her lower lip before lifting her chin. "With the way I plunge into your depths, some would say I have skills that would fit very nicely in the circus."

Mauve’s jaw almost dropped to the ground. "Mill is right there!" she yelled, resisting the urge to smack him.

"I didn’t hear a thing," Mill replied, with a terrible attempt at a straight face.

"Would you give me what I want, or do I have to state more of my circus-related skills?" he asked with a serious expression.

"I already said you could," she glared at him. She turned to Mill, "Could you please apply color to my lips? Make it as bright red as possible."

She glanced at him as if daring him to counter the order she had just given Mill, but Jael simply nodded and took a step back to give them room.

She shook her head and faced the mirror; it was not her problem to worry about. If he intended to roam around looking like a clown, she wasn’t obligated to stop him.

Mauve smacked her lips together when Mill was finally done and gave one last look at her reflection in the mirror before she stood to her feet and walked over to where Jael was standing.

His arms were folded as he stared down at her, his muscles looking as if they would bust out of his clothes any minute now. He gave her a once-over, a smirk tugging at his lips, but he did not attempt to get close enough for her to kiss him on the cheek.

Mauve was significantly shorter than Jael, so even on her tiptoes, the most she could reach was his chin, making it practically impossible to kiss his cheeks without his help.

Or not.

Mauve whipped her head back and walked back to her chair, starting to pull it, dragging it to where Jael stood.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"You’ll see," she stopped the chair in front of him, relieved that it wasn’t heavy. She was already embarrassed, and if she failed this time, she was sure she wouldn’t recover.

Gathering the hem of her dress, she stepped onto the chair. Jael immediately undid his arms, supporting both the chair and her. "You could have just told me."

"I didn’t like the smirk on your face," she whispered.

He chuckled and moved his face closer as she stood on the chair. "Still, it’s not worth you falling off the chair."

"It is not that high," she replied. Her face was aligned with his, and now that their faces were this close, Mauve felt her courage fizzle.

He pushed his face closer. "You know what to do."

Mauve didn’t like the smug look on his face. Did he think she couldn’t do it? She lifted herself a little, closed her eyes, and placed a gentle kiss on his cheek. She pulled away and inspected her work; it was too obvious. She met his eyes with worry in hers.

"The second cheek," he said and tapped it.

"Jael, are you sure about this?" she asked.

"Why are you so worried?"

"You would look ridiculous."

"And whose opinion is that?"

Mauve sighed and turned to his other cheek. She closed her eyes and kissed it. "Happy now?" she asked as she pulled away.

Even though she planned to make the kiss marks as obvious as possible, she tried not to make them too noticeable, but Jael had pale skin, and it didn’t matter how much she put on; it was bound to show. She could clearly see it in the dim room, let alone the vampires with their night vision.

"You have no idea," he replied and lifted her from her waist.

She couldn’t help the excited sound that escaped her lips. He carefully placed her on the floor and grabbed her arm, walking to the door, and holding on to her.

Just as they got to the start of the staircase, Louis could be seen coming up from the upper floor. He rushed towards them, his face all smiles.

"Hello, Louis," Mauve greeted, grinning back at him. "Did you sleep well?"

He nodded and then moved his gaze to Jael’s face. Mauve watched as several emotions passed across his face. He blinked and stepped closer. "What’s that on your cheeks?"

"I don’t see how that’s any business of yours."

Louis looked at Mauve with horror written all over his face. "Did you do this?"

"Don’t look at me like that, he asked me to."

"What? You look like a court jester, and we don’t even have one."

Jael didn’t respond to this, instead, he tugged on Mauve’s hand, starting to lead her down the stairs.

"Mauve, why didn’t you tell him this was a bad idea?" Louis asked, obviously not having any intention of letting the issue go.

"I promise I did, but he was insistent."

"Jael, I do understand that you’re in love, but there should be a limit to the amount of common sense you lose in the process. At this point, you’re drawing closer and closer to being deranged."

"If I wanted your opinion, I’d ask, but if I didn’t need it in all these years, why do you think I would now?"

"Still, you don’t need me to tell you you look silly. Anyone with an eye can see that."

Jael scoffed. "If that’s what you think." He had his back to Louis as he spoke, and Jael looked completely unbothered by his words. He didn’t even look like he would argue. Mauve didn’t know whether she should be proud of this or concerned.
