Chapter 620: 620. Right Amount of Cheesy

Mauve gladly accepted Jael’s help down the stairs after Jean had shut the door. She couldn’t believe he had been waiting the entire time. Did he intend to do this every time? She could just as easily meet him back in his room; he didn’t have to stand here alone.

"Did you really wait here the whole time?" Mauve asked, her voice a mix of disbelief and curiosity as she descended the staircase.

Jael’s grip on her arm was firm yet gentle, guiding her down the stairs. He glanced at her, his expression softening. "Of course I did. I wanted to make sure you were safe."

"Safe?" She chuckled. "What could possibly get me up on the roof?"

"I’m not willing to take any chances."

"Chances?" She laughed again. "The worst thing that would happen is me falling off the roof, and that’s impossible because I wouldn’t dare go near the edge."

"Still, better to be prepared for anything."

"You don’t have to worry about that. Besides, we don’t want to risk you getting scorched because you want to save me."

"What’s a little sunburn? Anything for you." He responded.

Mauve’s cheeks flushed slightly. "A little? You know, you don’t have to do that. I can manage on my own."

Jael smiled, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "I know you can, but I like being here for you. Besides, I enjoy our every moment together, even if it’s just walking down the stairs."

"Alright, if you say so." She wrapped her arm around his elbow and leaned into him. She turned around and waved to Jean, who was putting a considerable distance between them. He bowed to her, and she smiled before turning away.

"How was it?" Jael asked as they made their way to his room.

Mauve shrugged. "As you would expect it to be."

"Did Jean say anything new?"

Mauve shook her head. "He didn’t."

"Is this going to work at all? Or is it a waste of time?"

"Jael," she called, "It has literally just been the second morning. I doubt we would see results that quick."

He leaned into her and kissed her. "Yeah, but if it were up to me, you wouldn’t have fallen sick at all."

Mauve laughed and pulled away from him. "You know you can be quite cheesy."

"Quite? I am the right amount of cheesy," he replied and rushed after her. He lifted her off the floor by her waist, and Mauve squealed.

He looked up at her, and she smiled. "Right amount of cheesy?" She laughed. "And who told you that?"

"I did," he said and slid her down to place a gentle kiss on her lips.

Mauve blushed and wrapped her arms around his neck. He broke the kiss and placed his forehead against hers; she could hear his breathing.

"We should get you to bed," he said, and she nodded.

Mauve didn’t particularly feel tired, but she wanted to wake up early enough the next day. She had to try to get enough rest so she could try the spells again, and hopefully, this time around, it would work.

She didn’t think stress had anything to do with it, but she didn’t have a lot of answers to many things, and all she could do was make sure she didn’t fall short on her end.

"What are you thinking about?" Jael asked as he pulled her head backward to get a closer look at her face.

"What?" Her cheek reddened. "I was just thinking about how I want to wake up early."

Jael frowned as if he didn’t believe her words. Honestly, she couldn’t figure out how he hadn’t caught on to what she and Louis were trying to do, given how terrible a liar she was.

"You have no reason to wake up early," he said.

"True," she responded. "But you said I could watch the training, and I can’t help but get excited about that."

"It’s not as fun as you think," he said and started walking to the bed as she clung to his neck.

"Anything with you is fun."

Jael laughed. "You can make a grown man blush."

Mauve pulled her head from his shoulder to look at his face. "Are you blushing for real?"

"I’m a vampire, Mauve; the only color you’ll see on my cheeks is the stain from your lip color."

"Remind me to leave one next time," she laughed.

"It will be an honor," he said, lying down on the bed, still holding onto her.

"You’re going to walk around with stains on your cheeks."

"So?" He smirked, his eyes scanning her face.

"Sometimes you’re ridiculous."

He kissed her forehead. "I’ll tell a servant to bring our bath water."

"Oh, before then, can I talk to you about something?" Mauve watched Jael’s eyes furrow. Even in the dim light, she couldn’t clearly see his expression.

"What is it?" He asked.

"I was thinking we should let Jean go. I don’t think there is anything more he can do here, and knowing he is away from his pregnant wife for this long makes me very worried."

Mauve felt Jael stiffen, and his expression hardened a bit. He looked downwards as though to hide it from her. He gathered her and pulled her closer to his chest.

He let out a deep sigh. "You know what I want to say, right?"

Mauve nodded. "I think I can take a guess."

"I understand that you’re worried about his wife being alone, but at the same time, you gotta put your health first."

"Yeah, but Jean doesn’t seem to have anything else to add, and I intend to ask him to show me how to make herbs I can use, okay? I am going to try to make sure I learn enough to be able to take care of myself should something happen."

Jael touched the bridge of his nose. "He stays three more nights. I know you’ll say all you need is one night."

"I wasn’t going to say that, but thank you so much." She wrapped her arms around him.

"If you fall sick again, I’ll lock you up."

"Jael!"

"You can’t get sick if you don’t come in contact with anything that would make you sick."

"That doesn’t even make any sense."

"It does to me," he said and kissed her forehead. "It does to me."
