Chapter 622: 622. Intrusion And Plans

Aside from the shocked looks Jael received when they stepped into the dining hall and Louis’ earlier remarks, nothing else was mentioned about the lip stains on Jael’s cheeks. Mauve couldn’t believe he would actually walk around looking like that; it was ridiculous.

Louis had an expression that said he couldn’t believe Jael’s stupidity. The only person bothered among Jael’s personal guards was Erick, but instead of Jael, Erick shot her looks.

Mauve did her best not to be distressed by the stares. This wasn’t her idea, and she would not let others’ reactions bother her when the person with red marks on his face seemed completely unperturbed. It also didn’t help that he would occasionally glance in her direction with a goofy look on his face.

Just as the first meal was about to end, a guard burst through the doors, causing Jael’s expression to turn sour and every eye turned toward the figure standing by the door.

"Pardon my intrusion, my Lords. There has been an incident."

Jael picked up a napkin and wiped the corner of his lips. He dropped the napkin on the table and turned to Mauve. "Louis will keep you company," he said.

She nodded, glancing at Louis who gave a simple nod before continuing his meal. Jael was already on his feet, walking toward the guard who stood by the doors with his head bent.

"He didn’t even wait to hear my reply," Louis said as Jael walked out the door.

Almost immediately, Damon and Danag stood up. They bowed to no one in particular before going after Jael. Erick remained at the table, but with the urgency at which he ate his meal, Mauve knew he wouldn’t stay for too long.

However, Erick was not the only one. Soon enough, the dining hall was empty, leaving just her and Louis, the only ones who were still eating their first meal at a normal pace.

"What do you think happened?" Mauve asked Louis, who looked unconcerned by the whole ordeal while she couldn’t stop looking at the door.

He paused with his spoon halfway to his lips and raised his head. "How am I supposed to know, Mauve? You know the exact details I know."

She glowered at him. "You know what I am talking about. I don’t expect you to magically know the answer. I am simply asking if you can take any guesses."

"I am sure your guess is as good as mine."

"Palers," Mauve gasped.

"I didn’t say that. Finish up," he said and dropped his spoon. "Else there shan’t be any time to go through the spells."

"Of course," she said and continued eating. She suddenly paused and started speaking again, "That reminds me. I need to learn a few things from Jean before he leaves Vampire Regions, so I’ll meet up with him a few hours before the second meal."

Louis squinted his eyes, giving her a suspicious look. "What could you possibly learn?" he asked.

"Can you ever have anything good to say?" she retorted.

"I simply asked a question. No need to get all defensive," he smirked.

She stared daggers at him. "I’m not speaking anymore."

"I apologize. I was merely teasing. What would these lessons be about?" He moved his hand in a circular motion.

"Well, I want Jean to leave as early as I can, but Jael doesn’t think I am well enough for Jean to leave. At this rate, Jean would never leave, and his pregnant wife is all the way in Greenham. I can’t keep him here any longer."

Louis nodded, but she could tell he was not taking her seriously. However, she ignored his taunts and explained the situation.

"So for the next two nights before he leaves, I will try to learn as much as I can from the physician."

"That’s a pretty good idea," Louis admitted.

She jerked her head in his direction and frowned. She was surprised he was admitting this without saying anything taunting.

"What?" he asked.

"Nothing," she responded.

"I do think it is a good idea. Kieran definitely doesn’t know very much about humans. If you can figure out the herbs to take when you’re sick again, that would be easier on the rest of us. It’s annoying how easily humans fall sick."

"Annoying. I think you vampires are the strange ones. Not falling sick. Even animals get sick."

"Are you comparing us to animals?"

"I am simply saying most things that have life fall sick once in a while. Even plants get sickly."

"Vampires can get weak too."

"That’s not the same thing."

"Maybe, but just because we don’t get sick doesn’t mean we are invincible. We have other things to worry about like the sun. Wouldn’t you say it’s a fair trade? I think it’s a bit unfair."

"I can’t argue with that," she reluctantly admitted.

He laughed and wiped the corners of his lips. "We should get going," he responded. "We don’t have all night. Considering you have another appointment, if we want to get anything done, it would be best to start now."

Mauve nodded and stood to her feet, letting Louis lead her out of the dining hall. As they got to her floor, Mauve instinctively looked in the direction of Jael’s study, wondering if she would see any movement, but there wasn’t any.

She walked up the next set of stairs, trying to push away bad thoughts. She would just have to wait and ask Jael when she had the chance to do that.

"Could you try to look less worried?" Louis asked as they got to the front of the library. He pushed the doors open and turned his head to the side to look at her.

"It’s okay to be worried," she replied stubbornly.

"I didn’t say that, but you look like someone died."

Mauve rolled her eyes and walked past him. The library was already lit. Did the servants do that because they knew she was going to use it, or was it an order from Jael? She didn’t want to think about the servants; most of them still avoided her.
