The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 619. Sunrise
Chapter 619: 619. Sunrise
Mauve sat on the bench with Jael. She was on the rooftop waiting for the sun to rise, and Jael sat with her. They were both staring at the sky, neither of them saying anything. She rested most of her body on him while one of his arms wrapped around her, holding her to himself.
They sat right in the middle of her garden, surrounded by flowers and the scent filled the air, along with the smell that accompanied sunrise. Mauve felt very content to sit here with Jael in silence and stare at nothing.
"Do you ever wonder about sunrise?" She asked.
He looked down at her with an amused expression. "Why? Do you think I have never seen one?"
"You have?" She asked, her voice a mixture of horror and curiosity.
"Yeah."
"How? Is that possible? Isn’t the sun dangerous to you?"
"Of course it is, but I won’t die from stepping out in the sunâ€"well, not immediately. But if a vampire stays long enough, they might. I don’t think anyone knows for sure. However, sunburns are just nasty and excruciatingly painful. They also take too long to heal."
"I see," she said. "When was the first time you saw the sunrise?" She asked.
"When I was nine. I was a bit headstrong and snuck out. At first, I was only going to stick my hand out and see if it would hurt as my parents claimed it would, and then I got curious and popped my head out. Let’s just say it’s a memory I will never forget."
"Was it worth it?" She asked, trying to hold back her laughter.
"I suppose it was. Unfortunately, I needed almost two weeks to heal. Louis wouldn’t stop laughing at me."
Mauve couldn’t help but smile at the mental image of a young Jael sneaking out to catch a glimpse of the forbidden sunrise. "I can imagine Louis finding it quite amusing," she said, her laughter bubbling up despite her efforts to suppress it.
Jael’s eyes twinkled with amusement. "He did. For years after the incident, he reminded me of it and the consequences. I had to keep my face hidden for a while."
Mauve nestled closer to him, feeling the steady rise and fall of his chest. "Do you regret it?" she asked, her voice softer now.
He pondered for a moment, his gaze shifting to the horizon where the night sky was lighting up. "No," he said finally. "It was painful, and I wouldn’t recommend it, but seeing the sunrise for the first time is a memory I hold dear."
Mauve nodded, understanding the sentiment. "It’s a pity you can’t see it as easily as I can."
Jael tightened his arm around her, drawing her closer. "Yeah."
They sat in comfortable silence again as the world slowly woke up around them. Humans would be rising from bed now, preparing to go about their days while vampires were already tucked in bed and would remain so until sunset.
Footsteps drew her attention to the door, and Jean walked towards them. His footsteps were slow and steady, but they were still loud enough. He stopped about a couple of feet away from the bench and bowed his head.
"Good morning, Sire. Good morning, princess."
"Jean," Jael said and reluctantly pulled his arm away from Mauve. "I guess that is my cue to leave."
She nodded and watched him stand up from the bench. He walked past Jean, who hadn’t moved from his bent position, and he headed for the door. Halfway, he glanced back, and Mauve waved at him. He didn’t wave back, but she could see him smile before he slipped through the door.
"Jean," she said, turning her attention to the physician who was now moving closer.
He walked to the bench, and she made room for him, sitting on one end while he sat on the other end. The space between them was enough to fit three people comfortably.
"Were you able to get any sleep?" She asked.
"Yeah, but not a lot. It is a bit hard to sleep when the whole house is awake. I will try to sleep during the day, but it’s something that I cannot seem to get used to, no matter how hard I try. It is very impressive to see how you have completely adapted."
Mauve chuckled, "I wouldn’t say I have completely adapted."
"Still, you can cope with the situation in your own way. Is there any development or anything different about the patches on your skin?"
Mauve shook her head. "Nope, none that I have noticed. It is still the same as yesterday."
"That’s very worrisome, but you don’t feel worse or anything like that?"
Mauve shook her head. "I feel very fine. I am tempted to say never better," she half-laughed.
He forced a smile and then leaned his head back, looking at the sky as the sun slowly started to poke its head out. Streaks of orange, red, and pink filled the sky, and Mauve felt drawn to it.
After about half an hour, Jean said to call it a day, and they both headed to the door. Mauve walked behind him as he led the way. She thought he looked a little dejected.
She wondered if he missed his family. She shook her head; there was nothing to wonder about, she was sure he did. She would speak to Jael and ask that Jean be allowed to go back to his pregnant wife. She doubted he could do much for her again.
Besides, if she came up with something new, she could always send a letter to him. She had inconvenienced him enough. There was a chance Jael would fight it, but she would insist and ask maybe Jean to teach her how to make herbs for simple illnesses in case something happens again.
She wondered why she had never thought about this before. It would be good to learn as they couldn’t call him every time she fell ill; if she had some knowledge, it would help.
