Chapter 618: 618. Accepted or Tolerated
"Of course. What would you like to know, my love?" He stretched out his hand and touched the side of her face.
Mauve giggled, unable to stop the color from appearing on her cheeks. "Well, you can say no."
"I try not to say no to you, you know that right?"
She shook her head, "I don’t think so."
"Ouch. Know that when I decline your requests I have a very good reason."
"I know," she said and moved closer so she could rest her head on his chest. She wrapped her arm around his waist, and she heard Jael take a deep breath.
"What do you want, I promise I’ll do everything I can to make it happen."
"Well, do you think I can watch the training? I just thought about it. Things are getting really busy, and we barely spend any time together, so I wondered about that."
"You want to watch?" He asked.
Mauve didn’t miss the shocked tone in his voice. "Well, kinda. I don’t have to be close, but it could be safe for me to roam around the compound, wouldn’t it?" She asked.
She pulled back to look at his face; she didn’t know how he took it, and frankly, she was a little scared to find out, well, exactly. These days, Jael’s reaction didn’t scare her as much as it used to. The good news was he didn’t sound mad; he sounded shocked.
She smiled at him, and he looked down at her face. She could tell he was contemplating it. Did he want to say no but didn’t want to tell her no? She could guess that it was dangerous, but surely, she could at least be in the area; she didn’t need to be close.
"You don’t have—"
"Okay," Jael replied.
Mauve’s eyes widened. "Okay?" she asked.
"Yeah," he chuckled. "Why do you seem so surprised? Isn’t that what you want?"
"Well, I expected you to say something like ’when I get better’ or thereabouts."
"According to you, you’re well enough. Besides, I can always scoop you and take you inside if things aren’t going the way I want." He smiled.
Did he genuinely like the idea? Mauve wondered. It made her very happy. She closed the gap again and hugged him tightly. "Thank you," she mumbled.
He rested his chin on her head and rubbed her back. "You’re welcome. Are the patches any better?" He suddenly asked.
Mauve shook her head. "No," she replied, but somehow she didn’t feel so bad about them. It felt like her scars after the war. Besides, it wasn’t as though there weren’t signs that they were fading; it would just take a lot of time. Good thing she was patient.
"Yikes," he said.
"Don’t worry about it," she replied. "I feel better than ever, and I truly think that’s the only thing that matters."
"Jean fears it might return, right? Since he doesn’t exactly know what made you better. It might not be a problem we might be able to deal with should the illness return."
"Well, thinking about it isn’t going to solve it," she replied. "I feel really good right now, and I am going to keep believing it would remain that way."
It was cheesy to say she had faith, but truly she did. Things were going so well for her. Jael had no plans to get a mate; he obviously loved her. She wasn’t sick anymore. Sure, there was one thing she would never get, but life right now was way better than she had ever imagined it.
He pulled away from her and kissed the top of her forehead. "We should get going if we don’t want to miss the last meal."
Mauve nodded and pulled away from him, feeling a bit reluctant to do so. "Yeah," she smiled and started to get out of bed, but Jael lifted her, and she squealed.
He laughed as he dropped her to the floor. "Let’s go. Don’t worry, I am not carrying you all the way to the dining hall."
"I am not worried about that," she pouted.
"Well, I am not against taking you there," he replied.
"Don’t even think about it," she replied and walked ahead of him.
He laughed and rushed after her, opening the door before she could get to it; she walked out first, and he closed the door behind her.
Mauve made her way to the dining hall with Jael closely behind her. They didn’t hold hands as they walked together, but Jael was close enough to touch. The guards bowed as they got to the doors of the dining hall, and it was immediately thrown open.
Mauve instinctively leaned closer to Jael. The gazes of the vampires were something that was a bit hard to get used to. Vampires stared like they could see into your soul. The ones she was familiar with didn’t bother her. It was the other Lords that did. Other than Corbin, she didn’t know the rest of them, but there were three other Lords who always joined for the meals.
She walked to her seat, and Jael pulled it out for her to get in. She mumbled her thanks to him and sat down. At this point, this was standard procedure, and she had stopped getting stares when Jael did that. She wondered if they accepted it or they just tolerated it. She was really curious to find out which.
"How nice of you to join us," Louis said sarcastically when they were all seated.
Mauve smiled. "It is good to see you."
"I know somebody that would say otherwise," he mumbled. Jael shot him a look, and Louis immediately turned his gaze away.
Mauve chuckled as the servants served the food. She exchanged greetings with Jael’s personal guards. Danag asked how she was faring, and Damon simply nodded at her. Erick, as usual, didn’t look in her direction.
Was it funny that she almost missed when he bothered her? But not really. She appreciated the peace. She was sure he just tolerated her presence.
